Abia Government Confirms Herdsmen Attack In Community With Several Residents Feared Killed

The Abia State government has confirmed an attack by armed herdsmen in the Umunneochi local government area, resulting in several fatalities.

The state Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, who was silent on the casualty figures, disclosed this while addressing journalists at the Government House in Umuahia on Monday.

There have been some security breaches in the Umunneochi area of the state, leading to some fatalities,” Kanu said, adding that the state security agencies had been put on full alert to address the security issue.

He assured that the state government would not leave any stone unturned in activating its entire security architecture to tackle the problem.

This incident is reminiscent of similar attacks experienced in neighbouring Enugu State, where suspected Fulani herdsmen have been wreaking havoc on communities.

In a recent attack in Agu-Amed Autonomous community in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzu local government area of Enugu State, at least seven residents were killed, and two others are still missing.

The attack, which occurred on Sunday around 4:30pm, has left residents in shock and fear.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailants were dropped from helicopters that also hovered over the community until after the attack.

"Currently, there's uncertainty in my community. Armed Fulani herdsmen invaded Agu-Amed Autonomous Community on Sunday evening. They killed seven people; we have recovered their bodies in a savagery manner and two are still missing," a resident, Osita Ogenyi, said.

The attack has reignited concerns about the security situation in Enugu State and the need for urgent action to address the farmer-herder crisis. Community leaders have expressed frustration and anger, lamenting the government's inability to prevent these attacks or engage the assailants.

"This attack was a surprise one. They invaded the community around 5 pm and they didn't shoot their guns initially. They were slaughtering people with machetes until when people got the information, they started shooting. Before you know it, they disappeared," Ogenyi added.

The recent attack comes barely three months after women from seven autonomous communities in Eha-Amufu protested incessant attacks by Fulani herdsmen.

According to reports, at least 152 persons have been killed by Fulani herdsmen in Eha-Amufu between 2021 and March 2025, with the recent killings increasing the tally to 163.

In Abia State, the government has vowed to take decisive action to address the security breaches and prevent further incidents.

The development comes amid ongoing tensions between farmers and herders in the region, with some communities accusing the herders of destroying their farmlands and crops.

The Abia State government has faced criticism over its handling of security issues, with some communities demanding greater protection from the authorities. The government must take concrete actions to prevent further attacks and protect the lives of the people.

The situation in both Abia and Enugu states highlights the need for urgent action to address the farmer-herder crisis and ensure the security of communities.

Herdsmen are responsible for 80% of insecurity in Nigeria and the government is pretending not to know about it.

The solution to this madness is very simple since everyone already knows the culprit as Fulani herdsmen.

Herdsmen Attacks: 20,300 killed in South East, 19,000 churches, 3,000 Christian schools destroyed — Inter-Society alleges

The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Inter-Society) has raised alarm over what it described as a systematic and violent campaign targeting Christians and ethnic communities in Nigeria, particularly in the South East and the Middle Belt regions.

In a statement released on Easter Monday in Owerri, the group’s chairman Emeka Umeagbalasi and head of Democracy and Governance, Chinwe Umeche, alleged that since the middle of 2015, no fewer than 20,300 defenseless residents of the South East have been killed by suspected jihadist Fulani herdsmen and allegedly complicit federal security forces.

The group also claimed that across the country—especially in the old Middle Belt states of Benue, Plateau, and Southern Kaduna—approximately 19,000 churches and over 3,000 Christian schools and sacred learning centers have been destroyed, sacked, or burned beyond recognition.

According to the statement: “Shocking statistics on the ground across the country’s six geopolitical regions have clearly shown that an estimated 40 million indigenous Northern Christians have been uprooted since the July 2009 Boko Haram uprising. This displacement has escalated significantly since mid-2015 with the alleged takeover of state power and resources by radical elements within the Muslim Fulani population and their Hausa allies.”

The group alleged that these Christians have been forced to flee their ancestral lands to avoid being raped, abducted, murdered, or forcibly converted to radical Islamism. It added that many communities have been violently taken over, renamed, and converted into settlements stocked with arms and cattle.

From January to April 2025 alone, Inter-Society claimed that between 1,500 and 2,000 Christians were killed in Benue, Plateau, and Southern Kaduna. It said 800 to 1,000 more were likely abducted and taken to jihadist camps, while over 1,000 homes were also torched or destroyed.

In the South East, the group reiterated that over 20,300 people had been “hacked to death or killed” since 2015 on the basis of their ethnicity and faith, allegedly by jihadists and “federally deployed biased security forces.”

Inter-Society condemned what it described as the “gross inaction” of security agencies, accusing them of “deceitful post-crisis responses” and “discriminatory law enforcement” that fails to prevent the continuous attacks.

PoliticsRe: Rise Up, defend yourselves, Government cannot protect everyone - Danjuma (vid) by froxydydx:
While this is a good call, I think bulk of the problem is with the authorities that go about disarming people thus making them soft targets for fulani terrorists. The average fulani is a coward and will flee at the smallest resistance.

The Agatu people of Benue state defeated the fulanis during GEJ time. But the army came in and forcefully disarmed them, killing those that refused to submit their arms on PMB's order. After the army successfully disarmed the Agatus, the fulani returned back to kill and destroy.

Same thing happened to the Tivs when Gana, a Tiv warrior who waged war against the fulanis was killed by the army some years back on Buhari's order. We all know how hard the army went on ESN, thus leaving the Enugu people vulnerable to fulani terrorists.

Meanwhile, the Council Chairman, Barr Chijioke Ezeugwu assured local farmers of protection, adding that he directed security operatives to safeguard farmlands to enable farmers to return to their farms.

In a report shared on Facebook by one Sen Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, a resident of the local government, he quoted Ezeugwu to have spoken on April 08, 2025, during a security awareness visit to communities in Uzo-uwani Local Government Area with the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Enugu Government House.

Addressing the gathering in the various communities, the Chairman noted that he had directed security operatives to take charge of all the surrounding bushes and farms so that farmers could safely cultivate in their lands and also said they'll ruthlessly deal with some of the miscreants harbouring around its environs.

"Farming is very important to all of us, food security is the worst form of insecurity. Therefore, we will not allow food insecurity to surface in this part where we have started to witness a substantial return of peace and stability," he quoted the Council Chairman to have said.

Ezeugwu reassured the farmers of the government's commitment to improving security around farmlands by using local security operatives to protect farmers from the unwarranted attacks.

He called on all citizens to be resilient and conscious of the happenings around them and to report any suspicious activity or movement to security operatives.

He implored and equally urged all Communities to fully support and cooperate with members of the Nigerian Police, Military, the neighbourhood watch and other security agencies.

The Chairman noted that security operatives had started bush combing and government had taken a decisive step in bringing the menace to a stop.

When the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, was contacted, he denied the attack.

In text message sent to some journalists, Ndukwe said: "There is no report of such an incident please."

Like I said before, only an all out military assault against these cursed animals called Fulanis can safe Nigeria at this point because they are responsible for 80% of the current insecurity in Nigeria
