THE University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), in collaboration with the Bayero University Teaching Hospital, Kano and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has successfully conducted a kidney transplant on a 31-year old Suleiman Usman. The kidney was donated by his brother, Abubakar Usman at the university’s Kidney Centre.

According to the university’s authorities, the transplant was the first of its kind handled in the institution without the assistance of any foreign surgeons, since the Kidney Centre was established in 1993.

Announcing the successful transplant yesterday at a press briefing at the teaching hospital, the Chief Medical Director of UMTH, Prof. Othman Kyari, said “first ever in the history of Maiduguri Kidney Centre, a team of doctors and surgeons from this hospital and others from Ile-Ife and Kano performed a very successful kidney transplant on Suleiman Usman without the intervention of any foreign doctors and surgeons.

He said with the successful transplant, there will be no more need to send kidney patients for transplant in foreign countries.

The chief medical director also noted that besides overcoming the challenges of transplanting the kidney, the exercise was carried out at the total cost of N2 million, stating that if it were carried out in any of the foreign countries, it would have cost the hospital about N3.5 million.

According to Prof. A. Akinsola of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), once the kidney is successfully transplanted, normal function returns and the quality of life of the patient is normalised.

He said except for the side effects of immunosuppressive drugs and acute rejection episodes in non-compliant or poorly matched patients, the donor’s transplanted kidney would start functioning to continue with normal life.

On the prevention of kidney damages and the diseases associated with kidneys, he said: “Prevention is the best solution to kidney diseases by changing people’s life styles against excessive drinking, smoking and lack of exercises and other activities that could keep people physically fit.”

He said because many people are addicted to these life styles, there are already 60 million people suffering from kidney related diseases in the country.

Prof. Kyari further disclosed that 10 per cent of the kidney patients at the UMTH are of renal disease, while 16 are affected with various ailments of the kidney.

He said with the successful transplant of the kidney on Suleiman, the next transplant by the hospital’s team of doctors and surgeons would take place in the next three weeks.

Akinsola appealed to wealthy individuals and philanthropists to sustain the transplant of kidneys at the teaching hospitals, while the Federal Government is to reduce tariffs on imported drugs and encourage the local production of such drugs in the country to save foreign exchange.

THERE is anxiety among governors, following reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to launch massive operations in 10 states. Governors have raised the alarm that they are being targeted because of the forthcoming presidential primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Most of the governors abroad, especially Northern governors on Umrah (lesser Hajj), have decided to cut short their trips, return home and get set to face the "onslaught".

But the EFCC said its deployment of operatives to 10 states has no political undertone or motives.

Investigation by The Nation revealed that the EFCC is probing petitions against 10 governors bordering on alleged mismanagement of funds and abuse of the Local Government Joint Account.

The EFCC has deployed its operatives and policemen in the 10 states to arrest some commissioners and local government chairmen.

The states are: Rivers, Imo, Kwara, Bauchi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Gombe, Kebbi, Katsina, Sokoto.

Based on preliminary findings, the anti-graft agency deployed its operatives in the 10 states to invite some commissioners and local government chairmen for interaction.

The operatives were expected to be assisted by a team of 50 policemen from each state command of the Police.

It was learnt that after a review meeting on Monday by the commission, EFCC operatives were sent to the states.

It was not immediately clear last night how the governors knew of the sting operations and arrival of the EFCC teams.

According to findings, some governors in Saudi Arabia, who got wind of the EFCC’s moves, have summoned a meeting for Makkah today to review the situation.

But the governors are not taking chances as they believe that the "invasion" of their states by the EFCC was informed by the forthcoming presidential primaries of the PDP.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: "We have security reports that there is a plan to set EFCC against the governors to force them to back a particular aspirant.

"It is really unfortunate that we are sliding back to the era of arm-twisting like the case in 2007. If we believe in having sustainable democracy in this nation, why can’t they allow the system to work naturally.

"The governors are not above the law, but the timing of deployment of EFCC to some states is suspicious and ill-motivated to achieve a pre-determined agenda.

"This development is no doubt a consequence of intrigues within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party on presidential primaries. Some are out to whip governors into line to support an aspirant.

"Why is it that some of the targeted governors were those who backed the retention of zoning by the PDP? Is it a sin to hold a contrary view?

The source attributed the investigation of the anti-graft commission to the disagreement between the governors and the PDP leadership over order of primaries.

He added: "Some governors have insisted that presidential primaries must come last as the case in 1998, 2003 and 2007. But the NWC of the PDP is proposing that presidential primaries must be held ahead of governorship primaries to achieve a purpose.

"I can tell you that as long as it is a game of simple majority, those trying to muzzle the governors will not have their way."

As at press time, it was learnt that some of the governors in Saudi Arabia and others overseas are to cut short their holidays and return for a meeting in Abuja next week.

A governor, who spoke on the telephone, said he would return to Nigeria on Saturday.

The EFCC admitted that it was carrying out investigations in some states, but it was silent on the number of such states.

Besides, it claimed that its investigation had no political motives.

The Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Femi Babafemi, said: "The states where we are investigating at the moment are states where we have high volume of petitions.

"And these petitions had been assigned long ago to various teams by the chairman, Mrs. Farida Waziri. So, these teams have done the first stage of investigations, which is discreet, and the next stage is to interact with the suspected persons. This is what we are doing now.

"As I speak to you now, the EFCC chairman is attending a meeting in Vienna. So, wherever you find our operatives now, they are doing their legitimate duties, devoid of politics or any hidden agenda."

Responding to a question, Babafemi added: "Our investigation has nothing to do with politics.

"For instance, take the case of Rivers State; we have been there since 2008, carrying out some investigations over which some state officials have been charged to court and six others declared wanted. Will you now read political motive into this?"

THE Police are awaiting the autopsy report on the slain of former militant leader Soboma George as part of investigations into his August 24 murder.
The police said the report would facilitate their plan to declare the suspected killers wanted following the expiration of the 48-hour ultimatum given them to show up.
After George’s murder at the Old Port Harcourt Township, popularly called Town, his "boys" dragged his mangled body to the Abuja waterfront.
The body was later moved to a morgue in Town, where it was recovered by the police on August 27, following intelligence reports.
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, on August 27, said a splinter group, from the Greenlanders cult group, led by a notorious robbery suspect, Pere, and his cohorts, Dombra and Tommy, killed George.
Abba noted that the suspects, currently at large, masterminded the killing of the MEND’s ex-leader.
The police boss said his command would intensify the manhunt for the suspects, whom he said, were lieutenants of the deceased before they severed ties with him. He said they also refused to collect their monthly ex-militants’ allowances through George.
The police chief added that the command would release George’s body to his family for burial after the autopsy.
Rivers police spokesperson, Mrs. Rita Inoma-Abbey, confirmed the move to declare the suspects wanted.
Also yesterday, a police Corporal, Vincent Andrew, lost his life in an attempt to prevent the kidnap of Reverend Olaka Osaronu and members of his family at Ebubu-Eleme, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State. The deceased was the cleric’s orderly.
The whereabouts of the Managing Director of Devi Hotel in Port Harcourt, Mr. Kenneth Abali, who was kidnapped in the hotel premises yesterday, also remained unknown.
The kidnappers of the hotelier were yet to contact members of his family and had not demanded any ransom as at press time yesterday night
The attempt to kidnap the reverend took place at Commonwealth Church, a few minutes after a service. The cleric and members of his family fled into the bush, while the brave policeman confronted the kidnappers.
Mrs. Inoma-Abbey, who confirmed the development, said the slain cop was on special duty from the Police Mobile Force (PMF) Unit 1, Kaduna.
She stressed that policemen were on the trail of the kidnappers of Abali, assuring that the hotelier would soon regain his freedom.
Mrs Inoma-Abbey urged the public to give information about the suspects.

Coward lives with his gay fiancé in Marston, near Devizes and believes his marriage would set a “visible example” to other homosexuals within the church.

Rev. Coward speaking on his proposed gay marriage said: “My goal is for everyone within the church to feel comfortable with the situation because at the moment the majorityof gay Christians marry secretly.
“It is a taboo subject but the church is now under huge pressure to change its stance and that pressure will only increase in the future.
“Clearly the blessing is going to be quite a sensitive issue. I know that many people will see it and view it with horror.
“But we are both deeply committed Christians so it would be unthinkable for me not to do it in church and not to do it with the congregation and with all of our friends.
“I hope my wedding will inspire others and set a visible example to the church that we are not afraid.”

Coward speaking on the planned Church service said: “Churches are not supposed to bless civil partnerships. It can bless almost anything else; animals, bombs, battleships, armies going to war but gay couples? No. So our church blessing has to be carefully-worded in so far as it does not use the word blessing in the context of the two of us in relationship.”

Babangida, who was the chairman on the occasion, also recommended the close relationship between him and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to other Nigerian politicians, saying that politics should not create enmity among them. Atiku, who paid tributes to Gen. Babangida at the event, said their relationship dates back to the 1970s.
“What many Nigerians don’t know is that I’ve been friends with General Babangida more than 10 years before I met the late Major-General Shehu Yar’Adua,” he said.According to him, their relationship had been fostered by the need for Nigerian leaders to close ranks and focus on the challenges facing the country. “We have to work together to solve the problems facing us as a nation and making Nigeria a prosperous country for the benefit of our people.“The challenges facing the country are immense and there is an urgent need for the Nigerian political elite to work together and reposition the country for the benefit of all Nigerians,” he said.
