Toluwarni: As part of efforts to check the
indiscriminate bombing of places in
parts of the country, the Nigerian Air
Force (NAF) said it is in the process
of developing a robot for the
detonation of high caliber bombs.
According to the Commandant, NAF Institute
of Technology, Kaduna, Air Vice Marshal
John Oshoniyi, the institute has already
developed an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV),
code named “Amebo,” for surveillance and
intelligence gathering in crises-prone
areas of the country.
Oshoniyi spoke on Monday at a press
briefing as part of activities to mark the
41st graduation ceremony of the institute.
The commandant explained that when the
project is completed, the robot would go a
long way in countering the activities of
terrorist groups as the detonation of bombs
will not require the physical presence of a
human being at the scene.
According to him, “we all know that human
beings have always gone to detonate bombs
and in view of the danger involved,
anything can happen.
“It is because of this that we decided to
go into research and the development of the
bomb detonation robot.”
Oshoniyi described the UAV as the first in
the African continent, noting that, “we do
believe that Nigeria is capable of
attaining higher pedestal in military
aviation and defence-related technology.
“It is pertinent to note that following the
successful launch of the our Unmanned
Aerial Vehicle-Amebo II last year, a
modified and much improved version,
codenamed Amebo III, was produced and
exhibited during the recently concluded Air
Expo 2012, organized by the Nigerian Air
Force. This latest version is awaiting test
flight.
“In further recognition of our research
efforts, the institute has been attracting
interest from overseas companies who are
seeking to collaborate in the area of the
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle development.
“All these collaborative efforts are geared
towards repositioning the Nigerian Air
Force for sustained employment of airpower
in the realization of the vision of the
current Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal
Mohammed Dikko Umar.
“It is equally worth mentioning that some
state governments have indicated their
interest in partnering with the institute
towards manpower development for the
respective states.
“With adequate funding and political
support, we can develop better operational
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle that will find use
in pipeline and other power line monitoring
and aerial surveillance and this will
ultimately reduce incidents of
vandalization and sabotage thereby
enhancing our economic well-being.
“The UAV can also be used to enhance
internal security through the provision of
real time information when effectively
deployed in crises-prone areas.”
A total of 158 students, comprising
personnel of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian
Navy and the Nigerian Air Force as well as
civilians will graduate from the MSc, PGD,
HND and ND programmes of the institute, on
Thursday.
