“In Nigeria, majority of cases that deal with violence Against Women are unreported so official statistics are unavailable but some figures state that as high as 1 in every 5 women is in an abusive relationship.

The VAW music project is an hbs intervention implemented by DLI Tuesday Nig. Ltd. The project was launched to build women’s self confidence, discourage men from gender based violence, and to make society take notice and speak up instead of look away.

This necessitated recording a music album featuring some of Nigeria’s biggest musicians with a violence-against-women theme.

Very few Nigerians will know the renowned musician named Kokoma Ikpong, but majority of people will know her as a very wealthy and young business lady. Few days before this interview, our press team was alerted that she was in town and luckily she was spotted having cocktail with few white friends of hers.

Hi, can we meet you?

I’m Kate Kokoma Ikpong.

We understand you’re not fully based in Nigeria, can you talk about that?

Yes, I’m based in California USA. I have two companies there and am actually running down home finally. I might still go back to California but for now I feel it’s time to come enjoy Africa and do something here, at lease contribute to growth of the country.

You are into music, we have seen your smashing video, can you tell us about your music career?

I have been a music lover right from my secondary school, was the vice president of a choreography club. Then we used to perform every Sunday at the chapel. Started writing songs from SS.2 and I recorded my first single in 2006. I then moved to United States, and have been privileged to be in the studio with amazing artiste like Beyonce, Rihanna, Coldplay, Avril lavigne, Shade Adu and I actually did a song with R-Kelly but that record wasn’t released. So professionally I have been into music for six years

The painting is called “Truth” – and shows the president with his arms outstretched. A crown of thorns rests on his head.

It was originally supposed to debut nearly four years ago at New York City’s Union Square. But that event was cancelled due to public outrage.


In the piece, by Michael D’Antuono, the President is shown wearing a suit and red tie with his arms outstretched.
But instead of actually being nailed to a cross like Jesus, Mr Obama’s arms are extended drawing back a blue curtain. He has a crown of thorns resting on his head.

According to Michael D’Antuono, "I always regretted cancelling my exhibit in New York because I feel my First Amendment rights should override someone’s hurt feelings".

Popular Nollywood actor turned politician, Richard Mofe Damijo (popularly called RMD), who's the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Delta State has allegedly embezzled N50 million belonging to the ministry, together with the acting General Manager of the state’s Tourism Board, Philo Nkem Ajufo.

Sources in Delta State, including two employees of the Culture Ministry, told our reporter that a former commissioner in the Ministry had requested N50 million to organize the “Delta State Expo 2007.” However, the state government was unable to release the funds that particular year to sponsor the yearly event.
