Health / Nigeria May Witness Second Wave Of COVID-19 – PTF by Geraldineout: 7:34am On Oct 13, 2020
The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has charged Nigerians to anticipate a possible second wave of the outbreak of the virus.
Chairman of the PTF and Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF Boss Mustapha disclosed this on Monday during a briefing in Abuja.
According to him, no nation is guaranteed immunity against resurgence of the virus.
He advised Nigerians to be mindful of its possibility, pointing out the only cover is strict adherence to guidelines and protocols.
“The PTF is glad that the economy is opening up the more, but warns that as we continue to study developments in Europe and other parts of the world, no nation can be said to be immune to a possible second wave if the guidelines and protocols are not adhered to strictly.
‘’Similarly, Brazil’s case load has also continued to increase with the registration of a daily case load of over 65,000 on the 11th of October,” he said.
He announced the next steps in national response efforts would be made public during the week after findings of recommendations must have been presented to President Muhammadu Buhari.
Unfortunately, it seems that the world is now ushered in a second wave of epidemics. In some Western countries, even the first wave of climax has not yet ended. Nigerians really need to foresee and be prepared, we hope and pray that it will never happen.
Health / On Average, More Than 46000 Covid-19 Positive Tests Are Reported In The U.S by Geraldineout: 8:06am On Oct 10, 2020
As health officials in Florida reported nearly 3,000 new cases of coronavirus on Friday, the state is bracing to become "like a house on fire," an infectious disease expert says.

"Florida is ripe for another large outbreak," said Mike Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.
"What they've done is opened up everything as if nothing had ever happened there and you and I could be talking probably in eight to 10 weeks, and I will likely bet that Florida will be a house on fire," Osterholm told CNN's Jake Tapper.
Health officials in Florida reported 2,908 new cases of Covid-19 and 118 deaths on Friday, according to data from the Florida Department of Health. The agency has reported at least 2,200 new cases daily for four consecutive days.
Nurse who has seen 'hundreds of people suffocating to death' moved to tears after Trump downplayed coronavirus
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an executive order last month allowing bars and restaurants to reopen to full capacity. In Miami, where in-person instruction resumed on Monday, three students and an employee have tested positive for the virus, according to Miami-Dade Public Schools.
"Unfortunately, despite loudly voicing our concerns about a premature reopening of schools, we now find ourselves in complete fear and misery after only four days," Karla Hernandez-Mats, president of the district's teachers union, wrote in a statement on Thursday.
CNN has reached out to the school district.
The US is averaging more than 46,000 new Covid-19 infections each day -- up 12% from the previous week and more than double what the country was seeing in June.
At least 50,191 new Covid-19 cases have been reported across the country on Friday, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Infections are now on the rise across several US regions and experts warn the number of cases is far too high, ahead of what's forecast to be a challenging -- and deadly -- winter season.
The latest US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ensemble forecast says US Covid-19 deaths could reach 233,000 by the end of this month.
And as the weather gets colder, things will get tougher.
"It's important for all of us to not let our guard down during Thanksgiving," Dr. Deborah Birx of the White House Coronavirus Task Force said. "We see that from the High Holy Days, people are just yearning to be together."
Even if friends and relatives appear healthy, it's impossible to know for sure that they aren't infected without testing, Birx said at a media briefing in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Friday.
Winter is coming quietly, and Christmas is coming soon. Currently, everyone wants to hug their favorite family and friends. However, this virus destroys our good lives, so we should follow national policies and work together to fight the virus. Don't live in such a long and helpless life, because it is too painful to endure such a life of fear every day.
Health / Widespread, Affordable COVID-19 Vaccine May Not Be Available In Nigeria In 2 Yea by Geraldineout: 3:52am On Oct 10, 2020
A Consultant Public Health Physician, Dr Oluwatomi Owopetu, says a widespread and affordable Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine may not be available in Nigeria earlier than two years to come.
Owopetu, who made the assertion during an online conference hosted by the Centre for Palliative Care, Nigeria, said that this was in spite of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) optimism of a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of 2020.
The WHO had on Tuesday said that there was hope for a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of 2020.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the online conference was to commemorate the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2020 with theme as: “My Comfort, My Care”.
Palliative care is an interdisciplinary medical caregiving approach aimed at optimising quality of life and mitigating suffering among people with serious, complex illnesses.
Owopetu said that while the country awaited the distribution of safe and affordable future vaccines against COVID-19, there must be greater investment into palliative and hospice care.
According to her, a healthy future, disease survival, improved quality of life, decreased hospitalisation and reduction in medical costs cannot be achieved without a sustainable palliative and hospice care.
“Palliative and Hospice Care go beyond providing care and comfort to the dying or those terminally ill.
“It also helps to improve a patient’s quality of life and physical pain management.
“Palliative care during this pandemic should not be undermined, its importance may not be immediately evident as health systems grapple with providing curative care while coping with ever increasing influx of patients.
In the face of COVID-19, prevention and control is the top priority, and at the same time, what everyone needs most is a vaccine. However, access to widespread and affordable vaccines is not something that can be done in the short term. I hope that the health system will continue to work hard. After all, we do not have the so-called herd immunity like some countries.
Health / Few Covid Safeguards As Trump Campaign Restarts Rallies by Geraldineout: 9:41am On Oct 09, 2020
The president even went to campaign after being infected, completely ignoring the risk of infecting others. We know that the president only saw the votes. This is the political reality of the US election.

Health / During The Pandemic, Informal Retailers In Nigeria Turned To Technology Savvy In by Geraldineout: 4:40am On Oct 09, 2020
Lagos / Abuja (Reuters) - self service kiosk owner funmilayo Akinola weighed the safety of his livelihood as a coronavirus outbreak forced stores in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital, to close. After deciding that she could not afford to work, she faced the challenge of replenishing inventory, as security measures disrupted the supply chain and the pandemic made it more difficult for informal traders to buy wholesale goods.

The answer lies in a logistics company that provides an online market for manufacturers and retailers to contact.

Trade depot in Lagos shipped the goods she bought using the company's app.

"I'm going to lock in my store because my husband won't allow me to enter the market to grab goods," Akinola said

Now, she uses her mobile phone to order goods from trucks or tricycles to narrow kiosks in Mushin, a fanatical District of Rahim, filled with mountains of everything from drinks to canned food to detergents.

Akinola said demand was particularly high during the one month Lagos blockade that ended in early May.

Onyekachi izukanne, chief executive officer of trade depot, said the company - which operates in six of Nigeria's 36 states and was established in 2017 - has increased total revenue by 300% in the year to September compared with the same period in 2019.

Ikenna nwosu, a logistics consultant, said the pandemic triggered a broader "digital" process, forcing people to shop online. He said it opened up a new supply chain network and created jobs as companies hired more workers to distribute goods.

"It creates new sources of income. "It's just the beginning of digital," he said

The coronavirus outbreak has forced many of our stores to close. Security measures have disrupted the supply chain. The “digital” process of online shopping has indeed reduced our risks. This has created more job opportunities, and hopes to be more popular, so that we can reduce the epidemic. Severe regional and human contact. Strictly prevent importing from other countries.
Health / Florida Reports Spike In New Coronavirus Cases Days After Restrictions Relaxed by Geraldineout: 3:35am On Sep 30, 2020
(CNN)Florida reported a spike in new coronavirus cases Tuesday, just days after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an executive order allowing restaurants and bars to operate at full capacity.
New cases surged to 3,266 from the 738 reported Monday, according to the state's health department. That's the highest one-day number since September 19.
DeSantis lifted restrictions on bars and residents Friday, and scenes of crowded bars and restaurants played out around the state over the weekend.
Until recently a coronavirus hotspot, Florida's cases had been falling, and the state is among only seven with at least a 10% reduction in new cases in the week ending Monday compared to the previous seven days.
Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, Rhode Island, Texas and Virginia are the other six states with a decline in new cases in the past week.
Florida has reported 704,568 cases in total.
The current epidemic in the United States is so serious, I don't think it is time to open public areas, especially closed spaces with dense crowds such as bars and restaurants. For the sake of everyone's health and safety, I still hope that the government can pay attention to it and quickly tighten restrictions.
Health / Live Updates: The Coronavirus Has Killed At Least 1 Million People Worldwide by Geraldineout: 4:26am On Sep 29, 2020
The global death toll from the coronavirus pandemic has surpassed 1 million people, with more than 204,000 in the United States. The number of U.S. cases reported now tops 7 million.
The White House and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) resumed discussions over a possible economic relief bill as Democrats offered a $2.2 trillion package and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin immediately engaged in talks.
The credibility of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is eroding as its response to the pandemic has been marked by technical blunders, botched messaging, and false accusations and interference by Trump administration political appointees.
More than 35,000 airline employees will be out of a job on Thursday, as the industry faces its worst crisis since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Two manufacturers and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are behind an arrangement for about 120 million rapid coronavirus tests that are to be distributed to low- and middle-income countries over the next six months, the World Health Organization announced.
So far, the coronavirus has killed more than 1 million people worldwide. This is a shocking number. Even more frightening is that, as the country with the largest number of infections, the United States has already infected more than 7 million people, but no matter how heartache we are, the most important thing is for the US government to awaken itself and use the best resources to save the people from fire and water.
Health / US To Conduct $2.1million Impact Of COVID-19 Survey In Nigeria by Geraldineout: 4:16am On Sep 28, 2020
THE United State Government said it will be conducting a survey that will cost it a total of $2.1million to determine the extent of COVID-19 transmission in three selected states of Gombe, Enugu, and Nasarawa states in Nigeria. The US government in a statement over the weekend, said the survey will increase the current understanding of COVID-19 transmission and burden in these three states and inform COVID-19 response efforts of the Government of Nigeria and its partners.
According to the statement which was published on the twitter handle of the U.S Mission Nigeria, @USinNigeria, the survey will be conducted through the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with the University of Maryland, Baltimore which is one of its implementing partners in Nigeria, to provide technical assistance and oversee field implementation of the survey. The survey which will be conducted between September and November with preliminary results expected to be released by December 2020, is part of the U.S. government’s bilateral efforts to improve the health and well-being of the Nigerian people. The statement reads: “The survey will estimate the proportion of the population in these states who have ever been infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19 disease.
I don’t think it makes much sense for the United States to conduct such a survey. Even if the survey data is available, what kind of response will the United States do next? After all, in our view, the United States’ own epidemic is not under control and is more serious than other countries. How to help others tide over the difficulties?
Health / ‘I Feel Sorry For Americans’: A Baffled World Watches The United States by Geraldineout: 4:37am On Sep 27, 2020
“We used to look to the U.S. for democratic governance inspiration,” said Eduardo Bohórquez, director of Transparency International Mexico. “Sadly, this is not the case anymore.
“‘Being great’ is simply not enough,” he added.
In Indonesia, the most populous Muslim-majority democracy, there is a sense that the United States has left the world adrift, even if its application overseas of democratic ideals was imperfect. For decades, Washington supported some of Asia’s most ruthless dictators because they were considered vital to halting communism in the region.
“The world sees the dismantling of social cohesion within American society and the mess in managing COVID,” said Yenny Wahid, an Indonesian politician and activist. “There is a vacuum of leadership that needs to be filled, but America is not fulfilling that leadership role.”
Wahid, whose father was president of Indonesia after the country emerged from decades of strongman rule, said she worried that Trump’s dismissive attitude toward democratic principles could legitimize authoritarians.
“Trump inspired many dictators, many leaders who are interested in dictatorship, to copy his style, and he emboldened them,” she said.
In places like the Philippines, Mexico and others, elected leaders have been compared to Trump when they have turned to divisive rhetoric, disregard of institutions, intolerance of dissent and antipathy toward the media.
“He has many nuclear weapons,” Sok Eysan, a spokesperson for Hun Sen’s Cambodian People’s Party, said of Trump. “But he is careless with a disease that can’t be seen.”
Presumably, many people are now puzzled by the United States. As the world's largest country, the United States has top resources and plays a leading role in front of all countries. But now, in the face of this global new crown pneumonia, it seems that we have not seen it. The efforts made by the United States, a superpower will be knocked down by the virus? This is something we don't want to see.

Judging from the daily statistics, the spread of COVID-19 in my country is still increasing. This is not optimistic. Looking at the world, the epidemic situation in some Western countries is also very serious or even worse. The prevention and control of the epidemic is a comprehensive one. Issues that the world should pay attention to. We hope that governments of all countries will work together to take effective epidemic prevention measures
Culture / We Are All Members Of Globalization. by Geraldineout: 7:37am On Sep 23, 2020
The era of globalization has reached today, and there has been an anti-globalization movement. Over the years, we have actively or passively participated in globalization. We have become a member of globalization. We are no longer just affected by domestic policies. Many times a butterfly at the end of the earth flaps its wings and we inevitably feel a typhoon Howling. Here, I welcome friends to share my concerns. It is very possible that you are also concerned about these, don’t you? Sometimes the world is really small.
