A white US Army officer who was filmed harassing a Black man for taking a walk in his neighbourhood in Columbia, South Carolina, has been charged with third-degree assault and battery, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Department.

Jonathan Pentland, a 42-year-old sergeant first class assigned to Fort Jackson, was arrested at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday and was booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. If found guilty, Pentland faces a $500 fine and 30 days in jail.

"The first time I saw the video, it was terrible," Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said at a press conference Wednesday evening. "It was unnecessary. It was a bad video -- young man was the victim, the individual that was arrested was the aggressor, and he's been dealt with accordingly."

The incident took place on Monday April 12, officials said. Police were called and responded to the neighborhood at the time.

In the video, Jonathan and his family were seen harassing and threatening a young black man, named Deandre, who explained he was just taking a walk in the neighbourhood in Columbia, South Carolina.

Pentland, 42, shoves the victim as he yells at him: "You better start walking right now. You're in the wrong neighborhood, m-----f-----. Get out!"

The victim protests, saying he did nothing wrong, and is followed by the suspect who continues berating him.

"The leaders at Fort Jackson in no way condone the behavior depicted in the video posted recently," Brig. Gen. Milford Beagle Jr., Fort Jackson's commander, said in a statement. "This action deeply impacts our community -- the neighbors in the Summit, the city of Columbia, Richland & Lexington counties, and our Army family."

"I ask that our communities and leaders exercise a degree of patience, affording Sherriff Lott and law enforcement investigators to account for the full measure of events before, during, and after the incident that was recorded," the statement added.

According to the sheriff's department, the victim "approached several neighbors in a threatening manner and the confrontation escalated after a neighbor asked Pentland to intervene."

LIB reported that 15-year-old Lufuno Mavhunga committed suicide after she was bullied and assaulted outside her school premises on Monday. 
 
A video showing the pupil being repeatedly slapped in the face has caused outrage, with social media users calling for action, using the hashtag #JusticeForLufuno. 
 
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, who confirmed the development in a statement on Wednesday, April 14, said the arrested child will be dealt with in accordance with the Child Justice Act.
 
According to the spokesman, Lufuno Mavhunga reportedly went home in the afternoon following the incident, locked herself in her room and consumed an overdose of tablets
 
"The Police in Thohoyandou have arrested a 15-year-old School girl for allegedly assaulting another learner who later died in an apparent suicide. The suspect is a learner at Mbilwi Secondary School in Thohoyandou. The incident, which was captured on video and went viral on social media, allegedly took place at Sibasa Block A on Monday 12 April 2021 at about 11h30 and was reported to the police on Wednesday morning," the statement reads. 
 
"The victim reportedly went home in the afternoon and on arrival, she allegedly locked herself in the room and consumed an overdose of tablets. She was apparently found by her mother lying unconscious and was taken to Siloam hospital where she was certified dead on arrival. The deceased was also a learner at the same school. An inquest docket has been opened and police investigations are continuing. The arrested child will be dealt with in accordance with the Child Justice Act."
 
Meanwhile, the SA Human Rights Commission in the province said it would conduct a fact finding visit to the school.

The incident reportedly occurred in the south of Grand Isle, Louisiana on Tuesday, April 13, amid severe weather.

"The crew of the pre-commissioned Coast Guard Cutter Glenn Harris, a 154-foot Fast Response Cutter, arrived on scene within 30 minutes and rescued one person from the capsized vessel," the Coast Guard said in a statement. "A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Grand Isle rescued another person and good Samaritan vessels on scene rescued four other people from the water."

Officials said they can't confirm how many people were aboard the vessel for now.

“We’re still searching for more people,” Petty Officer Jonathan Lally, a spokesman for the Coast Guard 8th District, said in an interview with the paper Tuesday night.

The Times-Picayune reported that the vessel is used for oil and gas exploration, and Lafourche Parish President Archie Chaisson III confirmed to the outlet 18 people were on board before it was capsized.

The National Weather Service's New Orleans office on Tuesday issued Special Marine Warnings in the region amid severe weather.
