Yes, he was a genuine prophet of Allah.Many verses points to that likewise his history, i won't quote any because you may not trust and believe them. But I'm sure Google can help on that.
As regards the poison which he died from its effects is not a big deal in the sense that, he didn't die immediately from the effect while others died. Also, Allah chose to make him a martyr.
It's the practice of the Jews to kill their prophets, Yahya the son of Zakariyyah, Zakariyyah himself, were killed. Prophet Muhammad was a human being like us except that he receives revelation from Allah. When his son died, he cried. These buttress his human nature.

Prophet Muhammad was never compared to Allah in any way. He even kicked against that. He even forbade people from excessive praise of one another.

What's the meaning of Islam?
Islam,linguistically means peace. In the religion sense, it means total submission to the will of the The Only One God. All the Prophets submitted to The Only One God.

Aren't you amazed that part of the fundamental belief of the muslims is to believe in all the Prophets. Did you know that only three babies spoke in the cradle and Prophet Isa( may peace be on him) is one of them.

What you should try to understand is, all prophets are nothing but brothers. Their call is to the worship of the Only true God. If not, you won't find verses praising Jesus and his mother in the Holy Quran.
Prophet Muhammad's parents did not believe in the message of Ibrahim(Islam) just like Ibrahim's father also. So, it's in no way a defect to the son of the parents went the wrong way.
Will you castigate Adam for his rebellious son?
