Let me give an analogy:

You have a life changing interview for a CEO role but you are late, your car breaks down, there are no buses or public transport, you are walking to the venue but you are very unlikely to get there on time. Suddenly a man in a car who taking his friend to the same office for the same interview pulls up because he is lost and asks for directions to the same office you are going, you say that’s where you are going and if he can give you a lift, you can take him there. You get in and make your interview, you get the job. His friend doesn’t get the job.

Without him you wouldn’t have gotten the job because you would not have made the interview….fact. However, He didn’t do the interview for you but he played a critical role in you arriving on time for the interview. Without the interview, there is no job. You are grateful and acknowledge his role in the events that led to your getting the job.

The matter would die there and his role would be acknowledged as a destiny shaper. In your new role as CEO, you try to show your gratitude for the role the driver played in your destiny by giving him a crucial appointment in that company but HR dept who know him very well vetoes the appointment. Even though you are the CEO, you are new in the company, you don’t start a new job by fighting HR so you acquiesce.

However later he and his friends including the one who lost out for the job start a PR campaign against you. You resist the urge to respond not to seem ungrateful for the role the driver played but the truth is he didn’t stop out of the goodness of his heart, he stopped 1) because they themselves were lost 2) they needed you to take them to the interview so they helped you because they were trying to help themselves.
