We left the Market to go and sell in front of our house in 1982 or 1983. You see, when Sheu Shagari came to Lagos to campaign for re-election. The head of our Market mandated that all the market men and women must go and receive him at the campaign ground, I think it was Tafawa Balewa Square.

My grandma insisted that she didn’t know Shagari and Shagari didn’t know her, she said that if Shagari wanted to meet her, he should come and meet her in her husband house. Others went to welcome Shagari leaving their children to take care of their shops for the period. When they came back, they held meeting and told grandma to pay a fine or her shop would be shut. Grandma refused to pay the fine and the police of the Market Association (they appointed police among themselves as part of the Exco) came to lock our shop. Grandma beat them silly and tore their clothes. Not that Grandma was so strong, but the market police respected her because she was well over 70 years then. So the market police are like her children.

That was how Grandma packed out of the market to start selling in front of our house. After a short period of, there was rumours that some members of the Market reported Grandma to the Association that people are not coming to the market to buy again because Grandma was double-crossing the customers by selling in front of our house which is closer to the customers.

Grandma told me to write an official letter to the Association saying she has heard that some people are pushing the Association to come and disturb her peace at home after leaving the market for them. She said I should write that if dem born their great great grandmother well, make dem come. She said not even one of them will be able to run away because she will make sure they all sustain permanent injuries. The head of the Market Association had to go and beg the Traditional Ruler and of our community and his Chiefs to follow them to go and beg Grandma.

My grandma told me that when the day turned to night (Eclipse of the Sun) in the late 1940s, the Alfas in her community said God was angry with the world because of their Sins and that God will end the world. Everyone dropped what they were doing and rushed to the many Mosques to pray for forgiveness.

My grandma said her mother remembered on her way to the Mosque that she had something cooking in the fire, so she (my great grandma) rushed back to at least go off the fire. She (great grandma) was however surprised to meet my grandma at home eating fruits and unbothered. My great grandma dragged my grandma my one hand onto the dusty foot path saying “I know you are a witch, but you will not die in my house, you will go and die at the Mosque”, that was how my grandma was dragged to the Mosque to go and pray that Gid should not end the world, just because there was Eclipse. When the Eclipse cleared, everyone was happy that their prayers made God to change HIS mind about ending the world.

According to my grandma, she was unconcerned because she knows the world will never end except we humans kill ourselves with endless wars.

Unfortunately, about 80 years after, today’s religious idiots both in the Church and the Mosques still believe in what my grandma’s community believed in the 1940s
