Monrovia - Liberia announced on Monday that would soon receive doses of an experimental Ebola drug and give it to two sick doctors, making them the first Africans to receive some of the scarce treatment in a spiralling outbreak.

The US government confirmed that it had put
Liberian officials in touch with the maker of

Freetown - Eight Chinese medical workers who treated patients suffering from the deadly Ebola virus have been placed in quarantine in Sierra Leone, the Chinese ambassador in Freetown said on Monday.

"Six Chinese doctors and one nurse as well as five local nurses treated an Ebola patient at the Jui Hospital who later died of the virus," said ambassador Zhao Yanbo.

"All of them who came in contact with the patient have been quarantined for the past two weeks under observation while the hospital has been fumigated and closed temporarily."

Yanbo said another Chinese doctor who treated an Ebola patient at the Kingharman Road Hospital had also been quarantined.

Sierra Leone is one of the worst-hit nations with 298 deaths in the outbreak which has claimed at least 932 lives in four west African nations, and infected more than 1 700 people, according to the World Health Organisation.

Hong Kong - A Nigerian man who was quarantined after he showed Ebola-like symptoms while travelling to Hong Kong has tested negative for the deadly virus.

The southern Chinese city government said in a statement late on Sunday that the man, 32, had "tested negative for Ebola virus upon preliminary laboratory testing".

"In the past one month... he had no contact history with sick persons or animals and did not visit health-care facilities. He is currently in stable condition," a government spokesperson said in the statement.

The man arrived in Hong Kong from Lagos, Nigeria's most populous city, via Dubai on Thursday and was hospitalised on Sunday after vomiting and having diarrhoea.

Concerns are growing over the potential spread of the disease which has claimed nearly 1 000 lives in west Africa this year.

Hong Kong, a densely populated city of some seven million people, is particularly alert to the spread of viruses after Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome killed almost 300 people eleven years ago.

On 30 July the Hong Kong government said it would quarantine as a precaution all people from Ebola infected areas who showed any symptom of the disease such as fever, vomiting or diarrhoea.

Last week a woman who showed Ebola-like symptoms after returning from a holiday in Kenya tested negative for the virus.

Nigeria along with Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia have been hardest hit by the latest epidemic, which the WHO has called the worst outbreak of its kind in four decades.

Nigeria - the most populous nation in Africa - confirmed two new cases Fon riday of the often fatal haemorrhagic disease, bringing the total number of infections to nine, including two deaths.

The World Health Organisation has declared the epidemic an international health emergency, as countries scramble to impose measures to prevent any spread of a contagion that has claimed almost 1 000 lives.

Kigali - Rwanda has placed a German student with Ebola-like symptoms in isolation, and was waiting for test results checking for the deadly tropical disease, the health ministry said late on Sunday.

"Samples from the suspected case have been sent for testing to an international accredited laboratory for approval, results will be available in 48 hours," the health ministry said in a statement.

The patient is the first to be tested in Rwanda since the outbreak in west Africa.

Minister of Health Agnes Binagwaho said the patient was a German medical student, who had recently spent time in Liberia.

He had a fever and malaria but for "100% security" Rwanda had quarantined him, until test results - expected within two days - were back, she said.

Ebola has claimed nearly 1 000 lives in west Africa in the worst outbreak in four decades, prompting the World Health Organisation last week to declare the epidemic a global health emergency.

Like other nations across east Africa, Rwanda said it had put in place measures against the deadly virus.

"Surveillance systems and emergency management systems have been established," the health ministry said.

With the quick spread of the deadly Ebola virus, there emerge numerous theories on the disease origin and the methods of its treatment.

While one of the recent rumours that went viral among Nigerians said Ebola could be cured with "hot water and salt", the scientist from Bristol University claimed that the virus could have come from space.

According to The Mirror, Ashley Dale alleges that there is "every chance" the bug could reach the Earth on a meteorite.

The multi award-winning artiste is to use his fame to promote the culture of breastfeeding among nursing mothers across the country.

In his acceptance remarks as the ambassador, the rapper explained the importance of breastfeeding to the wellbeing of children and nursing mothers.

He was speaking at the launch of the 2014 World Breastfeeding Week by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Wednesday in Accra.

According to him, breastfeeding prevents babies from frequently falling ill and thus saves parents from spending their scarce financial resources on medical bills.

Although no Nigerian University made it to the top 10 Universities ranking being conducted by International Colleges and Universities (4ICU) and released on July 29, Unilorin was however, rated the 20th best in Africa and 1842nd in the world.

The 4ICU is an international higher education search engine and directory that constantly reviews accredited universities and colleges across the world.

For the latest exercise, it ranked about 11,307 colleges and universities by web popularity in over 200 countries.

Washington - First lady Michelle Obama embraced her family's African roots in a speech on Wednesday, telling a group of young Africans that the "blood of Africa" runs through her veins as she urged changing traditional beliefs on the worth of educating women.

Her husband had shied away from discussing his African heritage in his own remarks to the 500 Africans finishing a six-week Washington leadership fellowship on Monday, referencing his Kenyan father only once and in the question-and-answer session.

But Michelle Obama said as an African American woman, her discussion with the African youth was "deeply personal".

"The roots of my family tree are in Africa," the first lady told the cheering crowd. "My husband's father was born and raised in Kenya. Members of our extended family still live there. I have had the pleasure of travelling to Africa many times over the years, including four trips as first lady, and I have brought my mother and my daughters along whenever I can."

"The blood of Africa runs through my veins, and I care deeply," Obama said, addressing her listeners as her "brothers" and "sisters".

Three months before congressional elections that could determine the fate of much of President Obama's platform, Michelle Obama's popularity remains high while her husband's has sunk.

The White House is making women's empowerment a theme in a Washington African leaders summit next week.

Michelle Obama said problems with girls' education often stemmed from traditional "attitudes and beliefs" that exist even in the United States and lead to issues such as the gender pay gap and an underrepresentation of women in leadership.

She said men worldwide needed to "look into their hearts and souls and ask if they truly view women as their equals".
