Cristiano Ronaldo plays his first competitive game in Turin on Saturday as it was revealed that his arrival at Juventus has pushed the Serie A champions over the billion-euro mark on the Italian stock exchange.

According to Calcio e Finanza, a specialist sport and finance website, at the close of business on Friday, Juventus were valued at 1.035 billion euros ($1.2 billion).

It is the first time the club has reached that level since its introduction on the stock exchange in 2001.That compares to Manchester United, the world’s richest club, whose overall value is £3.1bn ($3.9 billion).

Juventus’s shares have grown 55.15 percent on the stock exchange since July 1, increasing from 0.660 euro to 1.024 euros.”The rise peaked this summer, starting in June, when the first information about the possible arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo began circulating,” noted Calcio e Finanza.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner joined the Serie A champions from Real Madrid on July 10 in a 100-million-euro deal. He earns a salary of 30 million euros per year.

Since his arrival sales of the club’s black and white jersey have also exploded.

Calcio e Finanza added that the volume of share sales went from 19 million euros in June to 301 million euros in July.

Ronaldo played his first competitive game in a 3-2 win against Chievo in Verona last weekend. His first game in Turin is against Lazio on Saturday at 1600 GMT.

“There’s excitement in the air!” said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.

“Ronaldo is bringing a great enthusiasm to Italian football, I see all the people that are waiting outside, but regardless of the excitement, we still have to win games.

“We haven’t won anything just by signing him, so we have to show that on the pitch.

“Lazio will make it a great encounter, they defeated us last season at Allianz Stadium to end a 41-game unbeaten run. So it’s very important, even if it is only our second match of the season.”

Simone Inzaghi’s Roman side — who finished fifth last season lost their opening match of the season 1-0 against Napoli.

“It would be wrong to only think about Ronaldo,” said Inzaghi. “They’ll also play (Paulo) Dybala and (Mario) Mandzukic, and they have so many alternatives on the bench.”

The over 100 women detained for protesting against the continued disappearance of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Owerri, Imo State, have all been released.
Infonewsnigeria gathered that the women were released at about 4:50pm on Friday.

IPOB has however called on the international community to query the Nigeria Police Force and the Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, over the detention.

Speaking through its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB described the detention of the aged women and pregnant mothers as wicked.

APC accuses INEC of leaking official correspondence


The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of leaking information on its congresses and primary elections submitted to the commission.

The party made the allegation in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, on Friday in Abuja.

It said that there was need for INEC to look into its internal handling of official correspondence in order to put a stop to such leaks.

The party said that it was aware of leakage of a letter by its National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, to INEC informing it of the schedule of the party’s congresses and primaries to elect party candidates for the 2019 elections.

“These leaks of our sensitive and confidential correspondence to INEC are becoming commonplace and totally unacceptable.

“We strongly request that INEC looks into its internal handling of official correspondence and put a stop to these leaks,” it said.

It added that the leaked formal notification to INEC was sent by the party in line with the provisions of Section 85 of the 2010 (Amended) Electoral Act.

The party, however, advised the public, particularly the media, to wait for an official announcement from the party, saying that the leaked dates were subject to changes if necessary.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Solomon Soyebi and Director, Voter Education and Publicity, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, did not take several calls made to their mobile telephone lines.

On his part, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, told NAN that he had no comment on the issue as he has not gotten full brief of the allegation.

Rohr names 24 players for AFCON Qualification


Gernot Rohr, Super Eagles Technical Adviser, on Friday in Lagos announced a 24-man team list for the 2019 Nation’s Cup qualifier against Seychelles. The Super Eagles will play the national team of Seychelles on September 7 in Victoria, Seychelles.

Rohr, at a news conference in Lagos, said 24 players and four stand-by players were invited for the match.

The list consists of three goal keepers, eight defenders, six midfielders and seven forwards.

Detained 112 IPOB Women Can't Be Visited Until - Imo Prison

he authorities of the Imo State Federal Prison have denied allegations of maltreating the IPOB women currently in detention.

The women were arrested during a protest, and charged for treasonable felony.

They were denied bail after a Magistrate Court said it couldn't grant them bail for their charges. As such, they were detained, pending advice from the Attorney-General of the state.

The prison management had turned back relatives of the detained women, who visited the court with food items. This led to an uproar in the state capital, Owerri, with allegations that the prison management was maltreating the women, some of whom were said to be pregnant.

However, James Madugba, the Public Relations Officer of Owerri Federal Prisons, denied the allegations, stating that prevailing circumstances could not permit the women to receive visitors for now.

Madugba also debunked claims that the Imo Prison is acting on "orders from above".

Explaining the position of the Prison management at a press briefing, he said: “We did not ordinarily deny family members access to the pro-Biafran women who are in our facility. There is no order from above asking us not to allow relatives of the women access to them. It is not also true that we exposed the women, especially the pregnant ones, to cold and inhuman environment.”

Madugba added that the women had to be duly registered, a process he said would take four days, before they could receive visitors.

“It is taxing to admit and register 112 people in any prison facility in Nigeria. You don’t just bring people into the prisons and the next minute, you want people to start visiting them," he added.

"Prison is a regimented environment. There are regulations. The responsibility of interviewing, admitting and registering such number of women would take four days. It is after these processes that you now allow family members to start visiting."

Sixty-one people have died in the latest outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo , the authorities said, adding that four novel drugs had been added to the roster of treatments.

The health ministry’s General Directorate for Combatting Disease said 103 cases of Ebola had been recorded in the eastern DRC as of August 22, 76 of which had been confirmed by laboratory tests.

Of the 103 cases, there were 61 deaths, 34 of which been confirmed by lab tests, while 27 others were considered “probable” cases of Ebola.
The government has earmarked $43 million (37 million euros) to fight the latest scare.

Ebola is a highly contagious haemorrhagic fever caused by a virus which is believed to have a natural home in species of tropical bats.

It causes serious illness including vomiting, diarrhoea and in some cases internal and external bleeding. It is often fatal.

In the worst Ebola epidemic, the disease struck the West African states of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone in 2013-15, killing more than 11,300 people.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is reportedly probing Senate President Bukola Saraki over the use of N17 billion bond secured by the Kwara state government, Abdulfatah Ahmed, governor of Kwara, is also being investigated.

According to The Nation, the EFCC suspects that the bonds raised in 2009 when Saraki was governor of the state may have been misappropriated by both administrations.

The fund is said to have been budgeted for 13 projects and loan refinancing package under the governments of Saraki and Ahmed.

Some of the said projects include N2billion Asa Dam mixed use development project, Ilorin water distribution project which was allocated N2 billion but has reportedly gulped N3.7 billion, Shonga irrigation project worth N2.9 billion as well as the International Aviation College which was allocated N1.5 billion “but N2.4 billion was spent on the construction and purchase of equipment”.

The newspaper quoted an EFCC fact-sheet on the investigation thus: “We are investigating a petition forwarded by the Code of Conduct Bureau, Abuja. It was alleged that the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed and the incumbent Accountant-General of Kwara State allegedly conspired and misappropriated N17billion raised through bond in 2009.

“Letters of invitation were sent to the Secretary to the state government, the accountant-general of the state as well as permanent secretaries for ministries that handled the projects.”

On load financing, the fact-sheet read: “The prospectus of the bond stated that Kwara state had indebtedness of N4, 980,000 in external loans out of which N3.3billion amounted to legacy obligations preceding the then administration.

“They proposed utilizing N2, 400,000,000 from the bond proceeds of the bond to service part of the legacy obligations which were (a) African Development Bank(AFDB)- construction of four specialist hospitals in Jebba, Offa, Oke-Ode and Sobi at a cost of N1,440, 828, 000; (b) AFDB-equipment procurements to the four specialist hospitals; (C) World Bank Essential Drug Projects.

“The total debt was N3, 301, 162, 42 only. Documents obtained from the accountant-general of the state did not show any indication that monies were paid to AFDB or the World Bank instead another list with heading ‘OTHER PAYMENT’ showed the names of government agencies and private companies being paid a total of N974, 896,343.47.”

The newspaper quoted a state government source privy to the probe as denying any misuse of the bond.

“The EFCC is on a wild goose chase because the bond has been fully repaid since 2014 without any outstanding liability for the people of Kwara state,” the source was quoted as saying.

“We suspect sheer politics and a plot to intimidate Saraki and Ahmed because 2019 polls are around the corner.”

Saraki and Ahmed are currently under probe over their alleged links with suspects arrested in connection to the Offa robbery incident.
