PoliticsYusuf Tuggar Pushes For Africa’s Permanent Seat On UN Security Council by Gs001(op): 9:26am On Jan 23, 2025
By Godsent Ogbebor

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has called for Africa to have a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, stating that Nigeria is well-suited to represent the continent in the global body.

According to sources, Tuggar made the call during a panel discussion on "Africa’s Momentum" at the World Economic Forum (WEF) summit, currently taking place in Davos, Switzerland, from January 20 to 24, 2025.

He criticized the exclusion of Africa from the Security Council, pointing out that nearly 60 percent of the Council’s resolutions address issues affecting the continent, yet Africa has no permanent representation.

Tuggar argued that many of the Council’s decisions, such as deforestation laws that ban the purchase of goods from deforested land in Africa, negatively impact the continent. He also highlighted the lack of accountability for companies contributing to deforestation in African countries.

The session, moderated by Bronwen Maddox, Director of Chatham House, included other notable speakers such as Mohammed Nafti, Tunisia's Foreign Minister; Therese Wagner, Foreign Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo; and Matia Kasaija, Ugandan Minister of Finance.

Tuggar emphasized Nigeria’s pivotal role in Africa’s development and global affairs, citing its support for South Africa’s liberation struggle and its contributions to the African Union’s Peace and Security Council. He noted that Nigeria’s strategic autonomy and nonalignment under President Bola Tinubu’s administration strengthen its case for a permanent seat.

He also mentioned the Technical Aid Corps initiative, through which Nigeria has sent professionals across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific, demonstrating the country’s commitment to the development of the Global South.

“Nigeria’s good relations with its neighbors, large population, and economic strength position it as a suitable representative of Africa on the global stage,” Tuggar said.

Tuggar stressed the need to view Africa as a diverse and powerful region, rather than a single entity. He urged developed nations to fulfill their commitments made during the Rio Summit, particularly on the transfer of technology to developing countries.

The discussion also touched on the upcoming G20 summit in South Africa, which Tuggar described as an opportunity to advocate for Africa’s inclusion in global governance structures.

With Africa comprising 54 nations, Tuggar argued that the continent’s voice must be heard at the highest levels of decision-making, and Nigeria is well positioned to lead this representation.

PoliticsNigerians In Diaspora React To Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Ban by Gs001(op): 9:02am On Jan 23, 2025
By Godsent Ogbebor

Nigerians living abroad have expressed concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump's move to end birthright citizenship through an executive order. According to sources, they argued that such a decision would require more than an executive order to amend a constitutional provision.

The order, signed on President Trump’s first day in office, seeks to stop automatic U.S. citizenship for children born on American soil to parents who are either in the country unlawfully or on temporary stay. It specifies that this policy will apply to children born in the U.S. after 30 days from the date of implementation.

This move has sparked legal challenges, with 22 Democratic states and civil rights organizations filing lawsuits to halt the order’s enforcement.

Reacting to the development, Mr. Ralu Ajekwe, a Nigerian residing in the U.S., questioned whether the executive order aligns with existing laws.

He said, “Is an executive order enough to amend a constitutional issue? A government exists to protect national interests, but the legality of this move remains questionable. If the order serves the goals and values of Americans, it might be justified, but its legality is the core issue.”

Similarly, a Nigerian legal practitioner based in Canada, who spoke anonymously, dismissed the move as mere showmanship.

“There’s a limit to what executive orders can achieve. The U.S. Constitution states that all persons born in the United States and subject to its jurisdiction are citizens. Can the children of temporary residents not fall under this jurisdiction?” he queried.

He also noted that children of diplomats are exempt from this provision due to diplomatic immunity, but undocumented migrants could argue that they are subject to U.S. jurisdiction, making the order legally weak.

Another respondent, Peter Obiora, an editor based in the U.S., argued that the order cannot override the U.S. Constitution without an amendment.

“There will be numerous lawsuits. The Constitution takes precedence over executive orders. Trump tried this before, and it failed. He may not succeed this time either, especially with his tenure nearing its end,” he said.

Johnpaul Nwafidelie, a resident of Canada, pointed out that similar discussions are ongoing in Canada’s parliament. He advised Nigerians seeking dual citizenship for their children to follow the legal process.

“Nigerians benefited from birthright citizenship for years. Now that the policy has changed, people should comply with the new rules. It’s about controlling immigration and ensuring that citizenship is granted to the right people,” he said.

While the executive order has ignited debates and lawsuits, many believe the U.S. Supreme Court will ultimately determine its legality. For now, Nigerians and other immigrants are urged to stay informed and explore lawful pathways to achieve their citizenship goals.

CrimeImo State: Man Arrested For Stabbing In-law To Death by Gs001(op): 7:50am On Jan 20, 2025
By Godsent Ogbebor

A 40-year-old man, Uchenna Okpara, has been arrested by the Imo State Police Command for allegedly stabbing his in-law, Uchenna Unakalamba, to death during an argument involving their children.

According to sources, the incident happened on Thursday in Ubomiri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state. Okpara allegedly attacked his in-law with a broken bottle after a minor disagreement between their children escalated.

The state police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Sunday, adding that operatives of the anti-kidnapping unit apprehended the suspect and recovered the weapon used in the attack.

He said, “The anti-kidnapping unit arrested 40-year-old Uchenna Okpara on January 16, 2025, for allegedly stabbing his in-law, Uchenna Unakalamba, to death. The incident occurred in Ubomiri after a disagreement involving their children. Responding to a distress call, police operatives arrested the suspect and recovered the weapon.”

The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead, and his body has been deposited in the morgue. The police say the suspect remains in custody and will face prosecution after investigations are concluded.

In another development, the Imo State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnapper, Ozioma Dike, and dismantled what they described as a notorious kidnapping syndicate operating in Agwa, Oguta Local Government Area.

According to sources, operatives of the anti-kidnapping unit stormed a forest in Agwa on Thursday, acting on credible information. The officers engaged the suspects in a gun battle, leading to the arrest of Dike, while other members of the gang escaped into the bushes.

Items recovered from the suspect included a pump-action rifle loaded with seven live rounds of ammunition and an iPhone belonging to a victim kidnapped earlier on January 8 in Ubomiri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area.

The police spokesperson said, “During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being part of a syndicate responsible for several kidnappings in Ubomiri, Ogbaku, and Ohii communities within Mbaitoli LGA.”

He added that efforts were ongoing to track down the fleeing members of the syndicate. “The suspect is in custody and will be arraigned in court upon conclusion of the investigation,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has reaffirmed the command’s determination to tackle kidnapping and other crimes in the state. He assured residents that the police will continue to work tirelessly to ensure peace and security across all communities in Imo State.

PoliticsEdo Tribunal: Police Strengthen Security As Violence Rises by Gs001(op): 7:22am On Jan 20, 2025
By Godsent Ogbebor

The Edo State Police Command has deployed more officers to the High Court Complex on Sapele Road, Benin City, where the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal is sitting. This move comes after rising tensions and violent incidents between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the first week of the tribunal hearings.

Senator Monday Okpebholo of the APC was declared winner of the September 2024 governorship election, with 291,667 votes, beating PDP’s Asue Ighodalo, who scored 247,655 votes. The Labour Party candidate, Olumide Akpata, came third with 22,763 votes. However, the PDP has rejected the results, alleging irregularities and asking the tribunal to declare its candidate the winner.

The first week of the tribunal witnessed chaos. On Wednesday, a gunman was seen in a viral video firing into the air and shouting near the court premises. On Thursday, thugs allegedly tried to force their way into the tribunal venue but were stopped by security officers. On Friday, supporters of opposing parties clashed, with some reportedly involving private security personnel accompanying a candidate.

The police have responded by increasing security at the tribunal to prevent further incidents. According to sources, the police are investigating the gunman seen in the viral video. A senior officer said, “It is our duty to keep peace at the tribunal, and more officers have been deployed for this purpose.”

Meanwhile, both APC and PDP have accused each other of causing the unrest. APC Publicity Secretary Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie blamed the PDP, saying their candidate brought private security personnel to the tribunal, which caused tension. He stated that security at the tribunal should be handled only by the police and DSS.

“It is wrong for anyone to bring private security to the court. This creates fear and can lead to problems. We call on the police to ensure that only those who have a reason to be at the court are allowed in,” he said.

The PDP, however, accused the APC of trying to distract the tribunal and intimidate their candidate, Asue Ighodalo. According to PDP Publicity Secretary Chris Nehikhare, “The APC is responsible for the unrest. One of their supporters was seen in the viral video shooting on Wednesday.” He added that private security was necessary to protect their candidate because they did not trust the police.

“The private security personnel were there to protect our candidate and his lawyers. They have no business with the court or APC supporters causing trouble,” Nehikhare said.

The Labour Party also expressed worry about the rising tensions. Its spokesperson, Sam Uruopa, warned that the unrest was harmful to democracy. “The way supporters are turning the tribunal into a battlefield is dangerous. Both parties need to calm their supporters and let the court do its work,” he said.

Crime29-Year-Old Mother Slaughtered While Harvesting Vegetables In Ogun State by Gs001(op): 7:20am On Jan 18, 2025
Young mother slaughtered harvesting vegetables on Ogun farm

The quiet farming community of Ilewo Orile in Abeokuta North, Ogun State, was thrown into mourning on Wednesday after a 29-year-old mother of one, Mrs Gloria Peter Ajine, was brutally murdered while harvesting vegetables on her farm.

Gloria, described by her family as a hardworking and devoted woman, had gone to her farm that afternoon to gather vegetables in preparation for the market day on 16 January.

Tragically, she never returned home.

Her grieving husband, Mr Peter Ajine, recounted the harrowing discovery with tears in his eyes. “I still cannot believe she’s gone. Gloria was the light of our family,” he said.

She went to the farm to gather food for us, for our son, for the market. Who would do this to her? She didn’t deserve to die like this. My heart is shattered.”

The family revealed that Gloria was found hours later on her farm, lying lifeless in a pool of blood. The assailants, who remain unidentified, had attacked her in what they described as a “cold-blooded manner.”

Born into the Ochong family in Adum East Ito, Obi Local Government Area of Benue State, Gloria was married into the Ajine family of Abofutu Ikponyire, also in Benue State. Her husband and their young child had relocated to Ogun State to build a better life.

Speaking on behalf of the family, her husband called the murder “an unspeakable act of violence that has left a void in our lives.”

He said, “Gloria was the kind of person who would light up a room. She was hardworking, loving, and full of dreams for her family. To think that she died in such a horrific way is unbearable.”

The family has called on law enforcement agencies in Ogun State to launch a full investigation into the murder and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Holding their one-year-old child in his arms, Peter made an emotional plea to the authorities.

“I have lost my wife, my partner, and my best friend. Our son has lost his mother,” he cried.

“We are calling on the government, on the police, and on everyone to help us find those who did this. Gloria’s life cannot end like this, without justice.”

He added, “I need to know why. Why would anyone do this? She didn’t have enemies. She was a good woman who worked hard for her family. Whoever did this has taken away my joy, and I will not rest until justice is served.”

Residents of Ilewo Orile have expressed shock over the incident, describing it as a rare and gruesome crime in their peaceful community.

Neighbours who knew Gloria spoke of her kindness and diligence in providing for her family.

“This is a tragedy,” said Mrs Rukayat Oladimeji, a neighbour. “Gloria was always smiling, always working hard. We cannot believe someone would take her life like this.”

Another community member, Mr Gbenga Adewale, added, “We are afraid. If this could happen to her, it could happen to anyone. The police need to act fast to ensure the safety of everyone in this area.”

The Ajine and Ochong families have jointly issued a statement condemning the act and demanding swift action.

“This murder is a tragedy not just for our family but for society as a whole. We call on the Ogun State Police Command to intensify their efforts in investigating this case and ensuring that the killers are brought to book,” the statement read.

The family also appealed to the government and human rights organisations to support their quest for justice, stressing that such acts of violence must not be allowed to continue unchecked.

When contacted by Saturday PUNCH, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, said she would gather more information about the crime and get back to the correspondent. She had yet to do so as of press time.

CSOs demand justice

Two civil rights organisations, the Human Rights Advocacy Watch Campaign and the All Nigerian Women League have expressed outrage over the gruesome murder of Mrs Gloria Peter Ajine.

In a joint statement released on Friday, signed by the Presidents of the HRAWC and NWJL, Mabel Ndinne and Maureen Fineface, the organisations condemned the act, describing it as a heinous crime that underscores the alarming insecurity faced by vulnerable Nigerians, particularly women in rural areas.

“This brutal killing of Mrs Gloria Peter Ajine is not just an attack on one family but an attack on our collective humanity,” the statement read. “It is heartbreaking that a woman, who was working to provide for her family, was cut down in such a horrific manner. This tragedy reflects the failure of the state to protect its citizens, particularly women, who are often more vulnerable to acts of violence in our society.”

The organisations demanded an immediate and thorough investigation by the Ogun State Police Command, calling on the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly.

PoliticsTribunal: Ighodalo, PDP Unveil Evidence Of Alleged Election Fraud by Gs001(op): 6:57am On Jan 18, 2025
By Godsent Ogbebor

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate for the 2024 Edo State governorship election, Asue Ighodalo, on Friday opened their case at the election petition tribunal, presenting key documents to back their allegations of widespread irregularities and and election fraud during the poll.

Ighodalo argued that the election was fraught with manipulations, which led the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to wrongfully declare the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Monday Okpebholo, as the winner. According to him, he polled the highest number of valid votes and alleged that INEC’s declaration was not in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, as amended.

At the hearing, the petitioners’ lead counsel, Adetunji Oyeyipo, SAN, tendered Certified True Copies of critical electoral documents, including INEC’s final declaration result sheet, summaries of results from local governments, ward results, polling unit result sheets, and polling unit booklets used during the election.

The documents were submitted to substantiate the PDP’s claims of electoral malpractices. However, counsels for INEC, Okpebholo, and the APC objected to the admissibility of the documents. They informed the tribunal that their objections would be detailed at the final address stage of the hearing.

Justice Wilfred Kpochi, who leads the tribunal panel, provisionally admitted the documents as exhibits, pending the respondents’ detailed objections during the final stage.

However, hearing on the petition continues today (Saturday), with the PDP and Ighodalo expected to present more evidence. The petition, marked EPT/ED/GOV/02/2024, seeks to overturn INEC’s declaration of Okpebholo as the winner of the election.

Crime‘she Was Cheating’: Suspect Explains Shocking Killing Of Girlfriend by Gs001(op): 8:27am On Jan 15, 2025
By Godsent Ogbebor

Timileyin Ajayi, 32, has been remanded in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Nasarawa State Police Command in Lafia for the alleged murder of a 24-year-old corps member, Salome Adaidu.

Adaidu, who was serving in Abuja, reportedly met her tragic end during a visit to Ajayi’s residence in Papalana, New Karshi, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

Ajayi was arrested on Sunday, January 12, while allegedly attempting to dispose of Adaidu’s severed head after dismembering her body. The suspect was paraded at the Nasarawa State Police Command headquarters, alongside weapons believed to have been used in the crime, including a knife and machetes.

Ajayi, visibly injured from a mob attack prior to his arrest, admitted to the killing in an interview with Channels Television, citing jealousy as the motive.

“I killed her because we don’t have each other all the time. It wasn’t planned; it just happened. She was cheating. I saw chats with other men on her phone,” he confessed.

When asked if he regretted his actions, Ajayi said, “I don’t have any regrets. Life is reciprocal. If you do something to someone, you have to expect something in return. That’s why I don’t regret it.”

Adaidu’s family denied knowledge of any relationship between her and the suspect.

Her elder sister, Esther Adaidu, expressed the family’s grief and demand for justice. “This so-called Timi guy, we don’t know him. We’ve never seen him. We only got a call telling us he had murdered and dismembered our sister,” she said.

Her uncle, Samson Adaji Adaidu, condemned the gruesome act, describing it as beyond comprehension. “He butchered her into more than 50 pieces. He put the remains in six polythene bags. It looked like he was preparing the body for consumption. We demand justice,” he said.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Nasarawa State Command, SP Ramhan Nansel, assured the family and the public that the case would be diligently pursued.

“Investigation is ongoing. Once concluded, the suspect will be arraigned in court for prosecution. We urge anyone with complaints against the suspect to come forward,” Nansel said.

However, while some media reports described Ajayi as a gospel singer, he identified himself as a cryptocurrency trader during the interview.

PoliticsTrump’s Cabinet Picks Face Intense Scrutiny As Senate Hearings Begin by Gs001(op): 8:36am On Jan 14, 2025
By Godsent Ogbebor

The spotlight is on Capitol Hill this week as US senators begin grilling Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees in a series of high-stakes confirmation hearings that could shape their political futures.

Starting Tuesday, 13 nominees will appear before 11 Senate committees for confirmation hearings. While some candidates are expected to breeze through the process, others face intense scrutiny over controversies ranging from sexual assault allegations to ties with dictators and vaccine skepticism.

The nominees have undergone rigorous preparations, including mock hearings and coaching sessions, to navigate challenging questions while demonstrating loyalty to Trump’s policies.

“This time, people view the nominees as an extension of Donald Trump and his agenda,” said Sean Spicer, Trump’s first White House spokesperson. “They’re not there to defend their views. They’re there to defend Trump’s policies.”

Senate Republicans are pushing for quick confirmations of Trump’s national security picks, with some Democrats signaling a willingness to expedite the process. However, fierce opposition is expected for candidates seen as unqualified or controversial.

One of the most contentious hearings will involve Pete Hegseth, Trump’s nominee for secretary of defense. The former Army National Guard officer and ex-Fox News host faces allegations of sexual assault, financial misconduct, and excessive drinking. Critics, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, have questioned his fitness for the role.

“Can we count on calling Hegseth at 2AM to make life-and-death national security decisions? Nope,” Warren posted on X.

Hegseth can afford to lose no more than three Republican votes if all Democrats and independents oppose him.

Other contentious nominees include former Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, whose past comments on US adversaries and meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in 2017 have drawn criticism. Gabbard’s recent support for a government intelligence program has softened some opposition.

Meanwhile, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nominated for Secretary of Health and Human Services, faces backlash over his anti-vaccine conspiracy theories.

Not all nominees face uphill battles. Former Florida Senator Marco Rubio, nominated for secretary of state, enjoys bipartisan support and is expected to be confirmed swiftly. Rubio’s hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, alongside Homeland Security nominee Kristi Noem, Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi, and CIA pick John Ratcliffe.

Bondi’s nomination follows the withdrawal of Trump’s initial pick, Matt Gaetz, amid allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use.

Hearings for other key figures, including Kash Patel, nominated to head the FBI, are yet to be scheduled. Patel has sparked controversy with his pledge to target journalists, lawyers, and judges he claims treated Trump unfairly.

PoliticsNAF Deploys Fact-finding Team To Zamfara Over Alleged Civilian Bombing by Gs001(op): 8:05am On Jan 14, 2025
By Godsent Ogbebor

Following reports of an accidental airstrike in Zamfara State that allegedly resulted in civilian casualties, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has dispatched a high-level fact-finding team to investigate the incident.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening in Kakindawa village, Maradun Local Government Area, reportedly claimed the lives of 16 vigilantes. Local sources, including an indigene, Garba Umar, disclosed that the vigilantes were on their way to assist neighbors in Tungar Kara village, who had been attacked by bandits, when the airstrike mistakenly hit them.

The Zamfara State government and the All Progressives Congress in the state have since confirmed the accidental bombing and extended condolences to the families of the victims.

In response, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, deployed a fact-finding team led by Air Vice Marshal Edward K. Gabkwet, Director of Coordination and Cooperation in the Civil-Military Relations Branch at NAF Headquarters. The team’s mandate includes engaging state and local government officials, as well as other critical stakeholders, to gather a comprehensive understanding of the events leading to the incident.

Speaking on the development, NAF spokesperson AVM Olusola Akinboyewa said, “Concerned about the reported incidence of civilian casualties in the recent NAF airstrikes in Zamfara State, the CAS, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has dispatched a fact-finding team to fully investigate the incident and provide a detailed report for further action.”

He added that the CAS reaffirmed NAF’s commitment to professionalism, transparency, and adherence to global operational standards. “Our absolute value for the life and well-being of every Nigerian remains an integral part of the ethos of the service. Mindful of the need to maintain public trust, the NAF will continue refining its operational procedures to ensure mission accomplishment while protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure,” Akinboyewa noted.

This incident comes just weeks after a Christmas Day airstrike by NAF in Sokoto State mistakenly hit two communities in Silame Local Government Area, killing at least 10 villagers and injuring several others. That operation, aimed at neutralizing Lakurawa terrorists, tragically affected Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities.

Meanwhile, as part of its community engagement initiatives, the Nigerian Army on Monday provided free medical services to over 5,000 residents of Gidan Gabas in the Dange/Shuni Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The exercise, organized in commemoration of Armed Forces Remembrance Day, aimed to offer relief to underserved communities.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2 of Operation Hadarin Daji, Maj. Gen. Ibikunke Ajose, emphasized the army’s commitment to its corporate social responsibilities. Represented by Brig. Gen. Ogbonnaya Igwe, Ajose stated, “The medical team has come prepared with sufficient drugs and resources to ensure that everyone who participates in this exercise receives adequate care. We chose rural areas like Gidan Gabas to ensure the services reach those who need them the most.”

PoliticsNCC To Name 18 Defaulting Banks Over N200bn USSD Debt by Gs001(op): 7:49am On Jan 14, 2025
By Godsent Ogbebor

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to publicly reveal the names of 18 banks that have failed to settle their collective N200 billion debt for using Mobile Network Operators’ (MNOs) Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) platforms.

This announcement follows a joint directive issued in December 2023 by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the NCC, mandating banks to clear at least 60% of their outstanding USSD-related debts by January 2, 2025. The directive also required the banks to establish payment plans with telecom operators.

However, industry sources revealed on Monday that only four banks have complied with these payment terms. The USSD debt, which predates the adoption of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) in February 2022, stems from unresolved billing and reconciliation issues that arose under older transaction management systems.

These debts have caused significant strain between banks and telecom companies, with the latter warning of the potential collapse of USSD services due to unpaid obligations. According to sources, the NCC is preparing to suspend USSD services for the defaulting banks within the next two weeks.

This move could disrupt banking transactions for millions of Nigerians, particularly those in rural areas or without internet access, who depend heavily on USSD for essential financial services. To mitigate the impact on customers, the NCC’s upcoming statement will include guidelines on how subscribers can switch to other banks to maintain uninterrupted banking access.

USSD services have grown to play a critical role in Nigeria’s financial ecosystem. Data from the CBN revealed that between January and June 2024, Nigerians conducted 252.06 million transactions worth N2.19 trillion via USSD. This represents a sharp increase compared to the N4.84 trillion transacted throughout 2023 across 630.6 million transactions.

Despite its importance, telecom operators have expressed frustration with the lack of significant payments from tier-one banks, which hold the largest share of the debt. Smaller banks, on the other hand, have begun making repayments.

Speaking to reporters in November, the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria, Gbenga Adebayo, noted that while progress has been made with smaller players, the larger banks have remained unresponsive. “We are seeing payments from smaller players, but the big banks, which owe the most, have not been forthcoming,” Adebayo said. “We are now waiting for intervention from regulators, including the CBN and NCC, to resolve the issue.”

Telecom firms have consistently highlighted the financial burden caused by the debt, warning that the continued delay in payments could force them to withdraw USSD services. Experts have also cautioned that any suspension of USSD could disrupt Nigeria’s banking operations, given the service’s pivotal role in facilitating financial transactions.

Ejike Onyeaso, a telecom consultant, emphasized in October that banks must prioritize settling their debts to telecom operators. “These services generate significant revenue for banks, and it’s only fair that telcos are compensated adequately. If telcos act on their threat to suspend USSD, the entire banking system could face serious disruptions,” he warned.

BusinessTelcos, ICT Firms Owe N1.69tn As Tight Monetary Policies Hamper Borrowing by Gs001(op): 7:30am On Jan 14, 2025
By Godsent Ogbebor

Information, communication, and technology (ICT) firms, including telecommunications companies in Nigeria, owed Deposit Money Banks a total of N1.69tn as of September 2024.

This comes amid renewed calls by telecommunications operators for an upward review of tariffs for data and voice services. Data sourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) quarterly statistical bulletin revealed that the sector’s indebtedness to banks represented a year-on-year decline of N68.04bn or 3.9 percent compared to the N1.77tn recorded in September 2023.

The drop is attributed to the Central Bank’s tightening monetary policies, which have led to higher interest rates and discouraged borrowing within the sector. Month-on-month, however, there was a slight increase in the debt profile by N31.61bn or 1.9 percent, from the N1.66tn recorded in August 2024.

Throughout 2024, credit to the ICT sector displayed mixed trends. At the beginning of the year, credit stood at N2.47tn in January, representing a remarkable increase of 99.3 percent year-on-year compared to N1.24tn in January 2023.

However, by March 2024, the figure dropped significantly to N1.67tn, reflecting a year-on-year increase of only 30 percent. The tightening of monetary policy by the Central Bank has been a key driver of the reduced borrowing activity. In 2024 alone, the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) was increased six times under the leadership of CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso, who assumed office in September 2023.

The MPR rose from 18.75 percent in February to 27.50 percent by November, marking a cumulative increase of 875 basis points within the year. This aggressive monetary policy stance has been aimed at curbing inflation and stabilizing the economy but has simultaneously raised the cost of borrowing for businesses, particularly in capital-intensive sectors like ICT.

Macroeconomic challenges such as exchange rate volatility and rising operational costs have further constrained borrowing by firms in the ICT sector. Despite these challenges, the ICT sector remains a critical contributor to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In the third quarter of 2024, the sector contributed 16.35 percent to Nigeria’s real GDP, although this was lower than the 19.78 percent contribution recorded in the second quarter of the year.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the telecommunications sub-sector accounted for 13.94 percent of the GDP, making it the third-largest contributor to the economy after crop production and trade. In addition to its GDP contributions, the ICT sector has also faced significant challenges in attracting foreign investments.

NBS data showed that foreign direct investments (FDIs) in the telecommunications sub-sector declined by 87 percent in the third quarter of 2024, dropping to $14.4m from $113.42m in the previous quarter. Year-on-year, this represents a 77 percent decline compared to the $64.05m recorded in Q3 2023. Despite this, the sector attracted $191.5m in Q1 2024, which was higher than the total foreign investments recorded in 2023.

Investment declines have also been reflected in reduced capital expenditures by major telecom operators. Between January and September 2024, MTN Nigeria’s core capital expenditure dropped by 27.79 percent to N217.64bn, while Airtel’s capex fell by 36.59 percent to $149m.

These reductions are tied to the financial pressures on the companies, including exchange rate challenges and declining revenues. In response to these economic realities, telecommunications operators have continued to advocate for cost-reflective tariffs. The Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria and the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria have pushed for tariff hikes, citing inflation and the adverse effects of foreign exchange fluctuations.

After 11 years of lobbying, the Federal Government has approved a tariff increase, with the condition that telecom companies commit to increasing investments in network infrastructure.

Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, confirmed the tariff hike, stating it was necessary to sustain the industry. “Tariffs will go up,” he said, while emphasizing the importance of using the additional revenue to address Nigeria’s growing infrastructure gap in the ICT sector.

Foreign AffairsChadian Forces Repel Attack On Presidential Complex, 19 Dead by Gs001(op): 10:13am On Jan 09, 2025
By Godsent Ogbebor

Gunmen launched an attack on Chad’s presidential complex in N’Djamena on Wednesday evening, sparking a violent clash that left 19 people dead, including 18 attackers and one security personnel, the government confirmed.

According to reports, the armed group attempted to storm the heavily guarded complex around 7:45 pm local time. Security forces swiftly responded, engaging in a battle that ended with the assailants being overpowered.

“There were 18 dead and six injured among the attackers, and we suffered one death and three injuries, one of them serious,” said government spokesman and Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah. Koulamallah appeared in a video posted on Facebook hours after the attack, surrounded by soldiers and armed with a gun, assuring the public that the situation was under control. “The destabilisation attempt was put down,” he stated.

While initial security reports linked the attackers to the Boko Haram jihadist group, Koulamallah dismissed the claim, describing the assailants as a group of drunken and drugged individuals rather than terrorists. He said they attacked four guards before breaching the presidential complex but were “easily overpowered.”

The attempted assault occurred while President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno was inside the complex, according to Koulamallah. Tensions gripped the city as roads leading to the presidency were blocked, tanks patrolled the streets, and armed police secured the area. Civilians fled the city center in cars and motorcycles, while gunfire echoed in the vicinity.

The attack happened just hours after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with President Deby and other senior officials in N’Djamena.

Reports have it that Chad frequently faces attacks from Boko Haram, especially in its western Lake Chad region bordering Cameroon, Nigeria, and Niger.

Meanwhile, Chad has also been accused of involvement in the conflict in neighboring Sudan, adding to the growing security challenges in the region.

CrimeSam Altman Denies Sister’s Abuse Allegations, Calls Claims “utterly Untrue” by Gs001(op): 10:38am On Jan 08, 2025
By Godsent Ogbebor

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has denied allegations of childhood sexual abuse made by his sister, Annie Altman, who filed a legal complaint on Monday.

In a statement published on social platform X, Sam, along with his mother and two brothers, dismissed the claims as false and deeply hurtful. “Our family loves Annie and is very concerned about her well-being. Caring for a family member who faces mental health challenges is incredibly difficult,” the family’s statement read. The family acknowledged years of tension with Annie, citing efforts to provide her with financial support, including covering her expenses and offering monthly assistance they intend to continue indefinitely.

However, they stated that Annie has continued to demand additional money despite their support. “The worst allegation she has made is that she was sexually abused by Sam as a child. Her claims have evolved drastically over time. Newly for this lawsuit, they now include allegations of incidents where Sam was over 18. All these claims are utterly untrue,” the family said.

Annie Altman, who is nine years younger than Sam, alleges that the abuse occurred between 1997, when she was three years old, and 2006. A 2023 New York Magazine report described Annie as an artist living in Hawaii, struggling with depression and a strained relationship with her family. The report also mentioned that she supports herself primarily through online sex work.

Sam Altman, is one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent figures, known globally for leading OpenAI’s groundbreaking release of ChatGPT in 2022. The tech entrepreneur and billionaire has been vocal about his goal to develop artificial general intelligence that benefits humanity.

TravelTwo Bodies Found In Landing Gear Of Jetblue Flight by Gs001(op): 3:03pm On Jan 07, 2025
By Godsent Ogbebor

Two unidentified bodies were discovered in the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue aircraft after it landed at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Monday night.

The flight had departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

The grim discovery was made during a routine post-flight maintenance inspection, JetBlue confirmed in a statement on Tuesday. The airline added that it remains unclear how the individuals gained access to the plane, and authorities are now investigating the incident.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, hiding in a plane’s landing gear is extremely dangerous.

Meanwhile, the compartment was cramped, with no insulation, and temperatures drop to freezing levels at high altitudes. Stowaways often face life-threatening conditions, including hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and severe cold.

In many cases, such attempts result in fatalities, as seen in this incident.

JetBlue expressed its condolences over the situation and said it would fully cooperate with law enforcement to determine the circumstances of the incident.

However, this discovery raises questions about airport security and the lengths to which some individuals go in search of better opportunities, despite the dangers involved.

Similar cases of stowaways have been reported in the past, often highlighting issues of desperation and security lapses.

Investigations are ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge as authorities work to identify the victims and understand the events leading to this tragic outcome.

PoliticsEkweremadu’s State Police Bill Resurfaces As Governors Rally Behind Reform by Gs001(op): 7:58am On Dec 30, 2024
By Godsent Ogbebor

The call for a decentralised police system in Nigeria has gained renewed attention as the National Economic Council (NEC) prepares to deliberate on the establishment of state police in January 2025. This push has also received endorsement from most of Nigeria’s 36 states, with Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, confirming widespread support.

The development comes against the backdrop of escalating security challenges across the country, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery. With the inefficiency of the centralised policing system becoming more apparent, the discussion on decentralised policing has shifted from mere rhetoric to legislative action.

A key highlight in the movement for state police was the Bill for the Creation of State Police, sponsored by former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, in the Eighth and Ninth National Assemblies. Although the bill faced rejection in the past, many of its provisions now serve as a blueprint for ongoing discussions.

Ekweremadu’s bill addressed critical concerns surrounding state policing, including structure, standardisation, armament, coexistence with federal police, and safeguards against abuse by state governors. Drawing from best practices in countries like the United States, Canada, and Brazil, the bill proposed a dual policing system featuring federal and state police forces.

Under this arrangement, the Federal Police would handle nationwide security matters, while state police would focus on local law enforcement, operating within a framework established by the National Assembly.

The bill also introduced checks to prevent abuse by governors. For instance, a state governor could only appoint a Commissioner of State Police on the recommendation of the State Police Service Commission and with the approval of the State House of Assembly. Similarly, directives from governors to state police commissioners would need to align with lawful and general policing standards. Disputes would be resolved by the State Police Service Commission.

To ensure accountability, Ekweremadu’s bill outlined robust oversight mechanisms. A State Police Service Commission would oversee state police appointments, discipline officers, and ensure adherence to policing standards. At the national level, the National Police Service Commission would supervise both federal and state police operations to maintain uniformity and prevent abuse of power.

The bill further proposed periodic reviews of state police activities by the National Police Service Commission to ensure they align with national interests and do not promote ethnic, tribal, or sectional agendas. Despite its rejection in previous assemblies, the growing insecurity in Nigeria has led to renewed interest in decentralised policing.

Ekweremadu’s legislative efforts have been widely acknowledged as visionary. In a recent television interview, Senator Ita Enang, a former federal lawmaker who once opposed the bill, admitted, “Senator Ike Ekweremadu was very vehement about state police. I was among those who campaigned against it, fearing governors might misuse it. But now, state police is an idea whose time has come.”

With President Bola Tinubu’s federalist stance and rising insecurity, stakeholders now view decentralised policing as a necessary step toward restoring order and protecting lives and property. As the NEC prepares to deliberate on state policing in early 2025, many believe Nigeria is on the cusp of a significant reform in its security architecture.

For advocates like Ekweremadu, the ongoing discussions represent the fruition of years of effort to create a safer and more secure Nigeria through decentralised policing.

CrimeAnambra Community Leader Alleges Kidnap Attempts Over Refusal To Sell Ancestral by Gs001(op): 7:22am On Dec 30, 2024
By Godsent Ogbebor

A community leader and Vice Chairman of Obunagu Achalla village in Enugu Agidi community, Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State, Ozo Ozoemena Okeke, has alleged plots by some of his kinsmen to kill him over his refusal to sell communal lands.

Speaking at his country home on Sunday, Okeke disclosed that he had been kidnapped twice between 2023 and 2024, alleging that the incidents were orchestrated by four of his kinsmen working with suspected kidnappers to eliminate him.

He said, “The first time was on October 17, 2023, when the road in front of my house was being graded. They accused me of selling land, which I didn’t. Thinking I had sold the land, they sent kidnappers after me to extort money.”

Okeke narrated how the kidnappers found only ₦22 in his bank account and even took his foodstuff before releasing him. “The second incident was in August 2024. After a peace meeting, kidnappers came to my house around 4 p.m. They took me into the bush and kept me for three days before letting me go,” he added.

However, the Chairman of Obunagu Achalla, Emeka Ementa, denied any involvement in the alleged kidnappings. Ementa stated, “I don’t have any contact with kidnappers. The community only decided to suspend Okeke from meetings and activities due to his alleged sabotage of the community’s unity.”

However, he further claimed that Okeke’s accusations were false, adding, “It’s like a drama to me. He is known for this kind of behavior.” The community’s land dispute with Ezinano Awka was also highlighted, with Ementa explaining the historical background and court rulings in favor of Enugu Agidi.

Ementa stated that the community had endured significant hardships over the land issue and called on the state government to intervene.

CrimeHoodlums Attack Etsu Lokoja’s Palace, Monarch Escapes Through Fence by Gs001(op): 2:09pm On Dec 24, 2024
By Godsent Ogbebor

The Etsu Lokoja, HRH Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda-Shelika, Nyamkpa IV, narrowly escaped an attack on his palace after suspected hoodlums stormed the premises, setting ablaze his vehicle and other property.

The attack occurred at about 1:00 am on Saturday at the monarch’s palace, located at Plot 306, New Layout, Lokoja. The monarch reportedly escaped by scaling the fence to save his life. The incident disrupted the planned second edition of the Lokoja Nupe Cultural Fiesta, which was scheduled for the same day.

Many Nupe natives from neighboring states had already arrived for the event before it was canceled due to the attack. The Etsu Lokoja recounted his ordeal, saying the attack began with a loud bang at his door. Upon checking through the window, he saw his car on fire.

He noted that he managed to escape through the back door and scaled the fence, as he feared being attacked. Residents in the community reportedly attempted to put out the fire but could not save the car and other property, which were destroyed. The monarch appealed to the government and security agencies to investigate the attack and bring the perpetrators and their sponsors to justice.

He urged the Nupe natives to remain calm and law-abiding, avoiding any form of reprisal. He also called on the government to officially recognize and grade the stool of Etsu Lokoja, which he said had existed even before colonization.

However, efforts to get comments from the police and government officials proved abortive, as the spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Aya, and the Security Adviser to the state governor did not respond to calls or messages at the time of filing this report.

According to sources, the attack has raised concerns among residents, with many calling for increased security and government intervention in Lokoja.

PoliticsTinubu Rejects Price Control To Solve Rising Food Costs by Gs001(op): 1:59pm On Dec 24, 2024
By Godsent Ogbebor

President Bola Tinubu has ruled out using price control as a way to tackle the rising cost of food in Nigeria. He believes that market forces, driven by supply and demand, are the best way to stabilize the economy.

In his first media chat on Monday in Lagos, Tinubu explained that the focus should be on improving supply chains, allowing the market to work on its own. When asked if he would consider implementing price controls, he said, “I don’t believe in price control; I don’t.”

He added, “We just continue to supply the market; we work hard to supply the market. It is all about supply and demand. There will be a point where the market will balance itself out.”

The president’s statement comes at a time when many Nigerians are struggling with the high cost of food and basic goods. Recently, food distribution events in cities like Ibadan, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory led to stampedes, with at least 60 people losing their lives.

PropertiesPDP Cancels Governor Makinde’s Birthday Celebration Over Child Deaths In Oyo by Gs001(op): 7:31am On Dec 20, 2024
The South East chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has canceled a grand birthday celebration planned for Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, following the tragic stampede in Ibadan that claimed the lives of many children during a Christmas carnival on Wednesday.

The event, organized by the embattled National Vice Chairman of the PDP (South East), Chief Ali Odefa, had gathered prominent leaders from the region and beyond at the Re-Meritona Hotel in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. Among the attendees were notable figures such as former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, former Presidential Adviser Professor Ben Obi, former Minister of Women Affairs Josephine Anenih, former PDP National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh, and former Anambra governorship candidate Valentine Ozigbo.

The planned birthday lecture, to be delivered by Professor Obi, was abruptly canceled when former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Sam Egwu, took the microphone to announce the decision. Egwu described the incident as tragic and explained that the celebration could not continue while the nation mourned the loss of young lives.

“You must have all heard about the tragic stampede that occurred during a Christmas carnival in Oyo State, resulting in the deaths of more than 40 children. It is a heartbreaking situation, and there is no way we can hold this celebration when the celebrant and the nation are grieving,” Egwu said, offering prayers for the families of the victims, Oyo State, and the entire country.

Chief Ali Odefa confirmed that Governor Makinde had planned to attend the celebration and even sent an advance team to Ebonyi State before the tragedy struck.

“They cannot be crying while we are dancing and rejoicing. This is painful and deeply sad, but it is the reality,” Odefa remarked, explaining that the event would be postponed to a later date. He emphasized that the gathering was non-partisan, highlighting the presence of Igbo leaders from various spheres rather than political divides.

Governor Francis Nwifuru, represented by his Chief of Staff, Professor Emmanuel Echiegu, also expressed shock over the incident and extended condolences to the grieving families.
