This is barbaric; even after being shot by the vigilantes, he should have been taken to the hospital, treated and made to go through a proper judicial trial. Sadly our society has made it like a norm that you must help people around you even if you're still just getting by yourself. In the western world, as soon as you're 18, you're expected to become responsible and solely dependent on your own earnings however meagre but our own society makes everyone dependant even beyond reasonable age due of the lack of jobs and the skill set necessary to get jobs (that are non existent).
In the UK and US for example, it's not uncommon you see teens working from as early as 18 years and moving out of their parents' houses by age twenty to start their own lives; Nigeria needs its social security restructured so that dependency can be reduced if not, very soon we will have people in their 40s still living in their parents houses and depending on handouts from friends and family because of the lack of jobs and good social security.
In your case, just make the commitment to help as you've done in the past the people whose needs are of more priority in your judgement.
