#BringBackOurGirls awoke the world to the ravages of Boko Haram, an al-Qaeda-linked terror group in Nigeria, and the plight of the millions of people who live in the midst of their insurgency. At the heart of the message were hundreds of missing schoolgirls, abducted in April from the remote village of Chibok by Boko Haram fighters, who vowed to make them into slaves. The #BringBackOurGirls hashtag channeled both sympathy from abroad and local outrage and concern in Nigeria, with many angry at the government of President Goodluck Jonathan for being unable to free the captured women. But four months later, the girls have yet to be brought back despite the efforts of the Nigerian military as well as U.S. counter-terrorism forces deployed in neighboring Chad. More than 200 girls remain missing in suspected Boko Haram captivity. Others have perished from snakebite, illness and deprivation in the wild. Boko Haram itself has continued its slaughter this summer, and seized more territory in the country's restive northeast. Over the weekend, it stormed towns along Nigeria's border with Cameroon, killing dozens of innocents. Nigerian forces are now fighting Boko Haram in pitched battles around Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, the main hotbed of Boko Haram's operations. The U.N. reports that at least 1.5 million people have been displaced by the conflict since Jonathan's government declared a state of emergency in May. But the gravity of the moment hasn't stopped some in Nigeria from appropriating the tragic hashtag for rather cynical purposes. Banners emerged in the capital Abuja over the weekend showing Jonathan alongside a new slogan: #BringBackGoodluck2015. The campaign appears to be the work of supporters of the president, keen for his reelection in presidential polls next February. It's not clear whether Jonathan has officially endorsed the new hashtag, but its seeming ubiquity suggests that he is not opposed to it.

Christ Embassy founder, Chris Oyakhilome, and his wife, Anita, are presently enmeshed in a divorce proceedings, but all that may become a side show as the United Kingdom’s Charity Commission has started investigating the UK branch of Christ Embassy, over controversial payments. The United Kingdom Charity Commission has launched a probe to look at the transfer of at least £3.6 million (N941 million) between 2008-2012, by the church to overseas entities. The Charity Commission, which is the regulator of charities in England and Wales, released a statement yesterday, confirming the inquiry into the financial activities of Christ Embassy. The statement disclosed that the commission has opened “a statutory inquiry to investigate the church over a number of serious concerns relating to the use of charitable funds, in particular large connected party payments and the potential misapplication of grant funding.” Statutory inquiries are only opened to investigate the most serious regulatory breaches. According to the commission, the purpose of the inquiry is to determine whether there has been any mismanagement or misconduct on behalf of the charity trustees, and to establish whether charitable funds have been properly applied and consequently take appropriate remedial action if necessary. The commission had on 11 August, cut off the powers of the church’s board of trustees, after it appointed an interim manager, Rod Weston, of the international audit and accounting firm, Mazars, to take over the management of the church. The commission stated that “until the investigation is concluded, Mr Weston would take over the management of the charity, including its staff, assets, interests, and relations with third parties.” He is also expected to discharge the functions of the church’s trustees and take steps necessary to secure and take control of the assets of the church. However, the commission stated the appointment of the interim manager would not affect the activities of the church. The investigation was reportedly commenced in July 2013, but after the commission interviewed members of the board of trustees and went through records and books of the church, it wasn’t convinced, which prompted the appointment of the interim manager. Consequently, UK tax authority, HM Revenue and Customs, withheld £2.7 million (N711.4 million) due to the church in donation between 2008 and 2012 until the conclusion is resolved. Meanwhile, the Charity Commission has declined to disclose details of the inquiry, saying it does not provide details of on- going cases so as not to jeopardize the investigations. In a similar vein, the Charity Commission had carried out a statutory inquiry into the UK branch of Matthew Ashimolowo’s KICC church. He was found guilty of approving payments and benefits for himself and his wife between 2002-2005 and was ordered to repay £200,000. |

Barely two weeks after the impeachment of Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako and the sack notice given to Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al- Makura a week ago, both of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), their colleague in Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha is being threatened to be removed by the state lawmakers. In Al-Makura’s case, the House of Assembly has asked the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Suleiman U. Dikko to raise a seven-member panel to investigate alleged allegations of misconduct against him, he did that at the weekend. In Imo State also at the weekend, there was tension as members of the Assembly vowed to commence impeachment proceedings against Owelle Okorocha for allegedly withholding their entitlements since he became governor in 2011. A competent source told Daily Sun at the weekend that the state legislators who are scheduled to return on September 9 are spoiling for a showdown with Governor Okorocha if he fails to pay them the arrears of their entitlements of about N420million, The lawmakers said they would have no choice, but to commence Okoro cha’s impeachment. According to the source, the lawmakers held another meeting last Friday where they resolved to use any legal means including the threat of impeachment to force Governor Okorocha pay them. “At the last meeting of the lawmakers last Friday, July 25, they resolved that they must use whatever legal means to collect their entitlements which Governor Okorocha has refused to pay them since he assumed office in 2011 in the name of Rescue Mission. Before this time, the legislators have made several appeals to the governor through the leadership of the House that lawmakers have to be paid their allowances and the alleged slashing of their salaries by the governor to fund his free education programme since 2011”. Although, the Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Uwajimogu and his deputy, Donatus Ozoemena, were said not to be part of the alleged plan by the 24 out of the 26 lawmakers excluding Oguta constituency where election matter is still pending in court, the lawmakers were united in their resolve to impeach Okorocha. They have also vowed not to accept any payment which is not cash and they are also determined to equally impeach the Speaker should he stand on their path. “If the Speaker stands in the way, he is going to be bulldozed along with the governor, anything short of cash will not be acceptable” the source said. Meanwhile, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Hon. Acho Ihim, has dismissed the alleged impeachment plot, describing it as baseless and malicious. He, however, confirmed the disparity in the salary of the current lawmakers and their predecessors. He said, “during the administration of Chief Ikedi Ohakim, the House took a loan and it was deducted monthly from the salaries of lawmak ers, so when we came in, the Clerk of the House was changed and a new one who was not properly briefed about the loan repayment, started paying with the records he met on ground. According to him, when it was discovered, we quickly wrote the governor, who promised to intervene and he has done that. For instance, we were paid normal salary in June. The governor is ready to pay, all he is asking for is a little time because the money is much. It is about N18 million per lawmaker. It is true that there could be agitation, but it has not amounted to impeaching anybody”. Similarly, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, Senior Special Assistant (Media) to Okorocha, dismissed the allegation, saying the governor has a cordial relationship with members of the Assembly. “How can it be true, there is no such thing, you can verify from the Assembly members, the state government has a good working relationship with them and I don’t think anybody is plotting any impeachment, for what, on a governor who is performing, it is not true my brother,” Onwuemeodo said. The continent of Africa is consistently known for its negativity, the leadership situation of the continent is no difference from the torrent of challenges militating against it. In the West, leaders are elected for a term of office and after the expiration, he simply pack his bags and go. But there are Leaders in Africa that disagrees with such mantra. Why would a leader rather want to die in office than leave honorably even in midst of clamor for them to call it a day. I thought Mandela exited after just one term? Let’s take a peep in the category of leaders that see Mandela as alien. They are in descending order. 8. IDRISS DEBY OF CHAD The Chadian leader who assumed office in 1990 after he took power through a rebellion against Hussene Habre and has since survived several rebellions of his own. With the people of Chad crying fowls, it seems the President have other ideas. After winning elections, in 2003 he abolished term limit to perpetuate himself in office. 7. ABDULAZEEZ BOUTELFLIKA OF ALGERIA How can a president whom had experienced several heart attacks still want to remain in office? He even campaigned and won the 2014 Presidential election and was sworn in on wheel chair. Before the election, he was not seen in public for 3years. This 77years leader with the antecedents regarding his health would definitely die in office. He reportedly had stroke just few weeks ago. In 2012, he surpassed Houari Bounmedienne as Algerian longest serving president. 6. JOSE EDUARDO DOS SANTOS OF ANGOLA This 71-year-old came into the Angolan Presidency in 1979 and since, he has been basking in the euphoria of office. With 35 years in power, the question is, what else does this man want in the presidency? It is rumored that he is grooming his son to succeed him in as President. Since 1979, he has worked with 8 Prime Ministers including one of his Sons. Elections in Angola are always at the beck and call of President Dos Santos. 5. BLAISE COMPAORE OF BURKINA FASO This Burkinabe politician who upstaged his best friend and former head of state, Thomas Sankara through the barrel of the gun in 1987. Since then he has manipulated his way to remain office. After having been in office for 27 years, one begin to wonder what else does he have up his sleeve to give to the teeming Burkinabes clamoring for development. With Burkina Faso constantly being ranked as one of the poorest Nations in the world, one would suggest for the exit of Mr Compaore. 4. PAUL BIYA OF CAMEROUN Many would not be surprised that President Biya is still in office after assuming seat of power in 1982. He is known to be undemocratic. Biya has presided over 7 Prime Ministers during his reign as President. Paul Biya introduced political reforms within the context of a single-party system in the 1980s and he since consolidated power. He has won more than 6 terms as President. Can you beat that? 3. OMAR AL BASHIR OF SUDAN This 70-year-old Sudanese politician came on board in 1989, and he had since remained in office amid general outcry for in him to stand down. In 2008, he was issued an arrest warrant by the International criminal court for crime against humanity, genocide and war crimes. Bashir, alongside his counterpart in South Sudan were engulfed in bitter struggle until the emergence of South Sudan in 2011. Though the West awaits his extradition for trial, this erstwhile Soldier surely has other plans up his sleeves. 2. YOWERI MUSEVENI OF UGANDA This Ugandan former war-lord has been in office for as 28 years having taking the seat of power in 1986. He has worked with 4 vice presidents and 5 Prime ministers. The 64-year- old leader said he does not care about democracy. He is one of those leaders known to manipulating the constitution in other to remain in office. The opposition in Uganda is constantly hounded for speaking against the regime of Museveni. How long will he stay in office? 1. ROBERT MUGABE OF ZIMBABWE Yes, this is the master of all the sit tight leaders in Africa. The 90-year-old leader is the only President the people of Zimbabwe have known because he came in after Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980. With Zimbabwe’s economy in turmoil and the currency valueless, the people of Zimbabwe deserved a better leader. Even with the Western world abolishing aids and grants to persuade Mugabe to leave office, the old man is maintaining the status quo. He perceives the West as Imperialists. The people of Zimbabwe must wake up or else doom days are here. Nonagenarian as president? Did I hear "God forbid"? |

The Witches & Wizards Association of Nigeria (WITZAN) recently held an emergency meeting at Afuze, Edo State Making this revelation in an exclusive interview with Saturday Sun in Lagos on Wednesday, leader and spokesman, Witches and Wizards Association of Nigeria, (WITZAN), Dr. Okhue Iboi said the emergency meeting held by his members was not only aimed at discussing the various challenges confronting the nation but also to chart a way forward. “Witches and Wizards in Nigeria are deeply worried by what is going on in the country especially Boko Haram insurgency. As stakeholders in the Nigerian project, we can no longer afford to fold our hands while the nation burns. Enough is enough”. While saying that the Boko Haram issue was one of the key issues discussed at their meeting, Iboi said it was witches and wizards from Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states that urged the association to convene the emergency meeting. According to him: “Our bi-annual meeting was actually supposed to come up in first week of October, but our fellow brothers and sisters from these three North eastern states made passionate appeal to our general assembly imploring us to discuss Boko Haram matter. Witches and wizards in Adamawa. Borno and Yobe states want us to intervene, to help cage Shekau and his blood- thirsty lieutenants” Speaking on the outcome of their deliberations, the 55-year-old wizard said the days of Abubakar Shekau, Boko Haram leader were numbered. According to him, Shekau will be captured before the end of December, and paraded on the streets of Abuja and Maiduguri for the whole world to see. “We witches and wizards in Nigeria have sealed the fate of Shekau. His days are numbered. He will be captured before the end of December, and contrary to the image and impression he has been creating that he is a warrior, after his capture, he will start singing like a canary bird.” Not done yet, Iboi, further said that Shekau, upon his arrest, will mention some powerful people who are his sponsors. An ordinary eye can’t see what we are seeing in the coven world. Witches and wizards have put Shekau on our radar. There is no peace for him again until the day of his arrest,” he said. Urging Nigerians to remain steadfast and not to panic, the witches spokesman added that the parents of the missing Chibok girls will soon have cause to smile. “Those girls are coming back home. They will be rescued, but it is sad that I have to say here that not all of them are coming back. They are not being held in the same place, some are in Niger, and some are in Cameroon while others are in Chad and Nigeria” , he added. Iboi, who said Nigerians should not doubt the witches’ declaration or revelations on the state of affairs in Nigeria, said: “This is not the first time we will be coming out to speak about the nation. Five years ago, this was in 2010, when Nigerians were preparing for 2011 general elections, especially the presidential poll, we came out to warn General Ibrahim Babangida and former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar not to contest against President Goodluck Jonathan, that Jonathan will floor them. What happened after these two eminent Nigerians disobeyed us, they lost in a disgraceful manner to Jonathan. Our warning to IBB and Atiku came out in one or two national dailies. In November last year, during one of our meetings, it was revealed to us that former CBN governor Lamido Sanusi would be unceremoniously removed from office, many people then labelled us fakes but what happened thereafter? Sanusi was ignominiously removed from office without completing his tenure. That time we also said that some PDP top notchers that decamped to APC would come back to PDP, did this not also come to pass? Witches don’t speak from both sides of the mouth, and what is not revealed to us in our meetings, we will never say it was revealed to us. We seldom speak out on national issues, we only speak when it is necessary to do so, and we do so out of patriotism”. Speaking on the other national issues which they discussed, Iboi had this to say about Oshiomole: “It appears as if Oshiomhole is a master political strategist but the crisis currently happening in Edo State will snowball into a bigger crisis that may see Oshiomhole being swept away from office. You can call it a political tornado or Tsunami. Comrade Governor should be vigilant.” For APC National Leader Tinubu, the witch leader said: “Tinubu will be betrayed. He will be sold out by those he trusted. This betrayal will affect his political empire. Tinubu’s political dynasty is under threat of crumbling. Tinubu is a good man, but the bitter truth he must swallow today is that APC is going nowhere. Many topnotchers of PDP that are in APC now will go back to PDP. Witches said so in November last year and it happened. I’m telling the whole world again today that many former PDP leaders that are now in APC will betray Tinubu and other APC leaders, they will go back to PDP this year, and before 2015 general elections.” On Sanusi, the newly installed Emir of Kano, Iboi said: Sanusi Lamido should not rejoice yet. What we see before Sanusi is myriad of woes. His road will be rough. Turbulent days lie ahead of him, he should not rejoice yet. He will experience trouble within and outside the emirate. His enemies are many, and to make matters worse for him, he had stepped on powerful toes. He needs all the prayers in this world to survive the turmoil looming before him.” On the anxiety over 2015, Iboi urged Nigerians to remain calm, saying: “Nigerians should rejoice. This nation will not break up. Witches and wizards carried out some intercessory spiritual work in Arusa, Tanzania, and New Delhi, in India over this issue, and luckily our brethren, that is fellow witches there, joined hands with us, and it was resolved that Nigeria should not break up. Forget about any American prediction, Nigeria will not break up. There may be pockets of crisis here and there, but they will be election related violence.” On 2015 general elections, the WITZAN leader said: “Jonathan will win re-election. Although there will be pockets of violence, Jonathan will win. I will also have to appeal to Buhari and Tinubu, they should not waste their money, time and energy on the poll. They should go home and rest. They should forget about becoming President or Vice President of Nigeria. APC will still lose more governors to PDP before this year runs out.” Asked why other witches and wizards don’t come out or hold their meeting in the open, Iboi laughed, cleared his throat before blunting out: “You speak like a small pikin. Witches are like spirits. We are invisible. It is only those that operate in the spiritual realm that can see us either when we are meeting or going for assignment. I was born a witch. I inherited witchcraft from my mother when I was in her womb. From the age of 7, I started seeing unborn babies in their mothers’ womb, and I could predict with precision of sex of an unborn child whether it is a boy or girl. When I was born, I was born with a leaf in my hand, and starting from the age of 5, I started healing people like a grown-up herbalist.” On the issues of witches being blood-thirsty, and suckling blood, Iboi said: “Those are bad witches, in our own association; we are white witches, and white wizards. We are here to save people. We don’t kill, we counter bad witches and neutralise them whenever they are on their evil mission.” While saying that another meeting of witches and wizards is slated for Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State in October, Iboi said the meeting will review the outcome of the one held at Afuze, so as to enable witches to know what action and steps to be taken next. To add to that, we are also converging on Damaturu as a sign of solidarity with our members, and also people and government of Yobe State that we are with them in the hour of crisis. The Boko Haram insurgency has become an open sore, and we are also joining efforts with government and other stakeholders to contain Shekau and his fellow blood-thirsty followers.” |
