Foreign Affairs / Israel Kills Top Hezbollah Commander Wissam Al-tawil In Lebanon Air Strike by Hamilton1(m): 3:50pm On Jan 08 |
An Israeli air strike killed senior Hezbollah commander Wissam al-Tawil today Monday 8th January, a development that is likely to result in a further escalation between the two sides, which have been involved in a low intensity conflict since 7 October. Tawil died along with another fighter from the Lebanese armed group, according to the Reuters news agency. The Israeli air strike targeted the pair's car in the village of Majdal Selm. Known as “Jawad”, Tawil was a deputy head of a unit in the elite Radwan force and played an important role in Hezbollah's recent confrontations with the Israeli army. "This is a very painful strike," one security source said, while another added, "Things will flare up now." The commander played “a leading role in managing Hezbollah’s operations in the south”, according to one unnamed official speaking to the AFP news agency. On 6 January, Hezbollah said it targeted an important Israeli military post with a barrage of 62 rockets as a “preliminary response” to the killing of senior Hamas official Saleh al-Arouri. Izzat al Rishq, a member of the Palestinian movement's political bureau, said Arouri was killed in a "cowardly assassination" by Israel, and warned such attacks would "not succeed in breaking the will and steadfastness of our people, or undermining the continuation of their valiant resistance". "It proves once again the abject failure of this enemy to achieve any of its aggressive goals in the Gaza Strip," he said. Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas' political bureau, also slammed the killing and compared it with the assassination of other senior Hamas leaders, including the group's founder, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, in 2004. "The assassination of the leader Arouri and his brothers by the occupation is a fully fledged terrorist act, a violation of Lebanon's sovereignty, and an expansion of its aggression," Haniyeh said. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said on Friday that all of Lebanon would be exposed if it did not react to the killing of the Hamas deputy chief and warned it would “certainly not go without reaction and punishment”. https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/war-gaza-israel-lebanon-air-strike-kills-wissam-al-tawil?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=Social_Traffic&utm_content=ap_xsxhudbt2o

Foreign Affairs / Netanyahu Says Gaza-Egypt Border Zone Will Be Under Israeli Control by Hamilton1(m): 2:22pm On Dec 31, 2023 |
The Israeli prime minister also predicts the war in Gaza and on other regional fronts would last many months. The border zone between the Gaza Strip and Egypt should be under Israel’s control, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said, as he predicted the war in the Palestinian enclave and on other regional fronts would last many months. As Israel entered the 13th week of its war in Gaza on Saturday, Netanyahu held a news conference where he renewed his promise to eliminate Hamas and bring home all Israelis held captive in Gaza. The Philadelphi Corridor – or to put it more correctly, the southern stoppage point [of Gaza] – must be in our hands. It must be shut. It is clear that any other arrangement would not ensure the demilitarisation that we seek,” he said. Israel has said it intends to destroy Hamas in Gaza and demilitarise the territory to prevent any repeat of the October 7 cross-border killing and kidnapping spree by the armed group. “The war is at its height. We are fighting on all of the fronts. Achieving victory will require time. As the [Israeli army] chief of staff has said, the war will continue for many more months,” Netanyahu said. He also added a rare threat to attack Iran directly over the near-daily exchanges of fire across the Israel-Lebanon border. “If [the Iran-backed Lebanese armed group] Hezbollah expands the warfare, it will suffer blows that it has not dreamed of – and so too Iran,” Netanyahu said without elaborating. The war has triggered fears of a regional conflagration amid rising tensions with other Iranian-aligned groups in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen. Israel’s relentless bombing and ground offensive on Gaza since October 7 has killed at least 21,672 people, most of them women and children, with thousands of others buried under the rubble. The military operation has also displaced almost the entire 2.3 million population of the besieged territory. About 1,140 people were killed by Hamas in Israel in the October 7 attacks. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/12/31/netanyahu-says-gaza-egypt-border-zone-should-be-under-israeli-control?utm_campaign=trueAnthem

Foreign Affairs / Police In UK Record Rise In Hate Crimes Since Start Of Gaza War by Hamilton1(m): 1:25pm On Dec 30, 2023 |
Campaigners against anti-Muslim abuse have described the trend as 'deeply worrying', while antisemitic hate crimes have also gone up. Figures released by the British police reveal that there has been a rise in hate incidents since the start of the war on Gaza following Hamas’ attack on Israel on 7 October. The figures, provided by some of the UK’s largest police forces, suggest there has been a sharp rise in Islamophobia, as well as examples of antisemitic hate crimes. West Yorkshire Police stated that between 7 October and 7 November, Islamophobic offences rose to 49 incidents from 29 during the same period in 2022 - something they said represented the biggest increase they had witnessed. Merseyside Police also said that Islamophobic offences rose from six to 10 for the same date range compared to 2022. There has also been a significant increase in hate crimes recorded by the British Transport Police, who noted that Islamophobic offences jumped from two to 22. Iman Atta, the director of Tell Mama, which monitors anti-Muslim abuse, described the levels of Islamophobic hatred and discrimination as "deeply worrying", adding it was affecting communities' "trust in authorities and their sense of identity and belonging". She said: "We should never allow such hatred and intolerance to take root in our communities and at this time." "Please look out for each other, whether Muslim or Jewish," she added. "We must stand together against intolerance, hate and racism." Antisemitic offences have also been on the rise. The PA news agency said that offences rose significantly in the larger police force areas in the month following 7 October. Greater Manchester Police recorded 74 antisemitic incidents compared with 15 during the same period the previous year. Met's commander for criminal justice Paul Trevers called the rise in religious hate crime in the capital "absolutely unacceptable". "No one should be subjected to hate because of their faith or race, and we are taking action against those who are offending," he said. A spokesperson for the Home Office said: "There is no place for hate in our society and we condemn the recent rise in reported antisemitic and anti-Muslim hatred. We expect the police to fully investigate all hate crimes and work with the CPS to make sure the cowards who commit these abhorrent offences feel the full force of the law. "Following recent events, we have also made further funding available to Jewish and Muslim communities, to provide additional security at places of worship and faith schools." The Metropolitan Police, the largest force in the UK, said delays prevented it from supplying full figures until the new year, but it had previously reported 218 antisemitic and 101 Islamophobic offences between 1 October and 18 this year, compared with 15 and 42 respectively in the same period in 2022. While the figures show a pattern of increasing religious hate crimes, methods for recording hate crimes are not consistent across forces, so data cannot be used to compare the number of offences between different areas or provide an overall total for the whole of the UK. https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/war-gaza-israel-palestine-uk-records-rise-hate-crimes?fbclid=IwAR2pYKpbGBOf87NW3ivvqzI55KHiA1IFLYwPgzwmv9Wz4iG4lFSixwhjWzo

Foreign Affairs / Hamas, Islamic Jihad Reject Giving Up Power In Return For Permanent Ceasefire. by Hamilton1(m): 3:47pm On Dec 25, 2023 |
CAIRO, Dec 25 (Reuters) - Hamas and the allied Islamic Jihad have rejected an Egyptian proposal that they relinquish power in the Gaza Strip in return for a permanent ceasefire, two Egyptian security sources told Reuters on Monday. Both groups, which have been holding separate talks with Egyptian mediators in Cairo, rejected offering any concessions beyond the possible release of more hostages seized on Oct. 7 when militants broke into southern Israel, killing 1,200 people. Egypt proposed a "vision", also backed by Qatari mediators, that would involve a ceasefire in exchange for the release of more hostages, and lead to a broader agreement involving a permanent ceasefire along with an overhaul of leadership in Gaza, which is currently led by Hamas. Egypt proposed elections while offering assurances to Hamas that its members would not be chased or prosecuted, but the Islamist group rejected any concessions other than hostage releases, the sources said. More than 100 hostages are still believed to be held in Gaza. A Hamas official who visited Cairo recently declined to comment directly on specific offers of more temporary humanitarian truces and indicated the group's rejection by repeating its official stance. "Hamas seeks to end the Israeli aggression against our people, the massacres and genocide, and we discussed with our Egyptian brothers the ways to do that," the official told Reuters. "We also said that the aid for our people must keep going and must increase and it must reach all the population in the north and the south," the official said. "After the aggression is stopped and the aid increased we are ready to discuss prisoner swaps," he added. ISLAMIC JIHAD Islamic Jihad, which also holds hostages in custody in Gaza, has echoed that stance. An Islamic Jihad delegation led by its leader Ziad al-Nakhala is currently in Cairo to exchange ideas with Egyptian officials over prisoner swap offers and other issues, but an official said the group had set an end to Israel's military offensive as a pre-condition for further negotiations. Islamic Jihad insists, the official said, that any prisoner swap must be based on the principle of "all for all", meaning the release of all hostages held in Gaza by Hamas and Islamic Jihad in return for freeing all Palestinians jailed in Israel. Before the war, there were 5,250 Palestinians in Israeli jails, but the number has now grown to around 10,000 as Israel has arrested thousands more in the West Bank and Gaza since Oct 7, according to the Palestinian Prisoners Association. Overnight into Monday, Gaza endured one of its deadliest nights in the 11-week-old war. Palestinian health officials said at least 70 people had been killed by an Israeli airstrike in the centre of the tiny, besieged Gaza Strip.
