Understanding Demineralized (DM) and Deionized (DI) Water

Demineralized Water (DM Water)

is highly purified water that has had all dissolved mineral salts and ions removed, such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, sulfate, bicarbonate, and others. It is produced mainly through ion exchange, reverse osmosis, or a combination of both.

De-ionized Water (DI Water)

is a form of DM water, produced by passing raw or pretreated water through cation and anion exchange resins. These resins replace positive and negative ions in the water with hydrogen (H⁺) and hydroxide (OH⁻) ions, which combine to form pure H₂O.

Key Difference:

Aspect: Demineralized Water

Purity Level: High (industrial use)

Typical Conductivity: 1 – 10 μS/cm

Residual Ions: Almost none


Deionized Water

Purity Level: Ultra-high (lab/electronic use)

Typical Conductivity: 0.05 – 1.0 μS/cm

Residual Ions: Extremely negligible
