Low sperm count is a health condition that occurs when the fluid (semen) you ejaculate during an orgasm contains fewer sperm than normal. We have what is called a low sperm count(oligospermia) and a complete absence of sperm(azoospermia). Your sperm count is considered lower than normal if you have fewer than 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen. Having a low sperm count decreases the odds that one of your sperm will fertilize your partner's egg, resulting in pregnancy. The degree of low sperm count and motility rate differs among individuals. It is always advisable to go for a test to know your actual state. Causes of Low sperm count The process of sperm production is complex. This requires normal functioning of the testicles (testes), hypothalamus, and pituitary glands — organs in your brain that produce hormones that trigger sperm production. Problems with any of these systems can affect sperm production. There are various factors responsible for low sperm count. Environmental Factor Sperm production or function can be affected by overexposure to certain environmental elements, including: 1. Overheating the testicles. High temperature can impair sperm production and function. Although studies are limited and inconclusive, frequent use of saunas or hot tubs might temporarily impair sperm count. Sitting for long periods, wearing tight clothing, or working on a laptop computer for long periods also might increase the temperature in your scrotum and slightly reduce sperm production. 2. Industrial chemicals. Long exposure to benzenes, toluene, xylene, herbicides, pesticides, organic solvents, lead, and painting materials might contribute to low sperm counts. 3. Heavy metal exposure. Exposure to lead or other heavy metals also can cause infertility. 4. Radiation or X-rays. Radiation exposure can reduce sperm production. It can take several years for sperm production to return to normal. Life Style and Health Factor 1. Drug use. Consuming anabolic steroids to stimulate muscle strength and growth can cause the testicles to shrink and sperm production to decrease. The use of illicit drugs such as cocaine or marijuana might reduce the number and quality of your sperm as well. 2. Alcohol use. Drinking alcohol can lower testosterone levels and cause decreased sperm production. 3. Tobacco smoking. Men who smoke might have a lower sperm count than those who don't smoke. 4. Depression. Being depressed may negatively affect sperm concentration. 5. Emotional stress. Severe or prolonged emotional stress, including stress about fertility, might interfere with the hormones needed to produce sperm. 6. Weight. Obesity can affect fertility in several ways, including directly impacting sperm and causing hormone changes that reduce male fertility. 7. Occupation. Certain occupations might be linked with a risk of infertility, including welding, or those associated with prolonged sitting, such as truck driving. However, the data to support these associations is inconsistent. Medical Causes 1. Hormone lmbalances. The hypothalamus, pituitary, and testicles produce hormones that are necessary to create sperm. Alterations in these hormones, as well as from other systems such as the thyroid and adrenal gland, may impair sperm production. 2. Ejaculation problems. Retrograde ejaculation occurs when semen enters the bladder during orgasm instead of emerging out of the tip of the penis. Various health conditions can cause retrograde ejaculation or lack of ejaculation, including diabetes, spinal injuries, and surgery of the bladder, prostate, or urethra. 3. Varicocele. A varicocele (VAR-ih-koe-seel) is a swelling of the veins that drain the testicle. It's the most common reversible cause of male infertility. Although the exact reason that varicoceles cause infertility is unknown, it might be related to abnormal testicular temperature regulation. Varicoceles result in reduced quality of the sperm. 4. Infection. Some infections can interfere with sperm production or sperm health or can cause scarring that blocks the passage of sperm. These include inflammation of the epididymis (epididymitis) or testicles (orchitis) and some sexually transmitted infections, including gonorrhea or HIV. Prevention To protect against infertility, avoid known factors that can affect sperm count and quality. For example: Don't smoke. Limit or abstain from alcohol. Do not take illicit drugs. Talk to your doctor about medications that can affect sperm count. Maintain a healthy weight. Avoid heat. Manage stress. Avoid exposure to pesticides, heavy metals, and other toxins Symptoms i. One major sign is difficulty in conceiving after active sex for over a year. ii. Our daily life is filled with activities and challenges. Trying to make a balance in every area of our well-being, especially financial stability. The men most time and goes through a lot to keep the home happy. Excessive stress not properly managed impacts the male system negatively l. Male reproductive system The male reproductive system is influenced by the nervous system. The parasympathetic part of the nervous system causes relaxation whereas the sympathetic part causes arousal. In the male anatomy, the autonomic nervous system, also known as the fight or flight response, produces testosterone and activates the sympathetic nervous system which creates arousal. Stress causes the body to release the hormone cortisol, which is produced by the adrenal glands. Cortisol is important to blood pressure regulation and the normal functioning of several body systems including cardiovascular, circulatory, and male reproduction. Excess amounts of cortisol can affect the normal biochemical functioning of the male reproductive system. 2. Sexual desire Chronic stress, ongoing stress over an extended period, can affect testosterone production resulting in a decline in sex drive or libido, and can even cause erectile dysfunction or impotence. 3. Reproduction Chronic stress can also negatively impact sperm production and maturation, causing difficulties in couples who are trying to conceive. Researchers have found that men who experienced two or more stressful life events in the past year had a lower percentage of sperm motility (ability to swim) and a lower percentage of sperm of normal morphology (size and shape), compared with men who did not experience any stressful life events. 4. Diseases of the reproductive system When stress affects the immune system, the body can become vulnerable to infection. In the male anatomy, infections to the testes, prostate gland, and urethra can affect normal male reproductive functioning. Stress management This recent discovery ries about the effects of stress on health shouldn’t leave you worrying. We now understand much more about effective strategies for reducing stress responses. Such beneficial strategies include: 1. Maintaining a healthy social support network 2. Engaging in regular physical exercise 3. Getting an adequate amount of sleep each night |
