I always thought dowry is what is paid for the groom, as in India. But going by your explanation - dowry in my place is what we call IDU ULO. It is a compulsory gift from the bride's family to the bride and the standard is kitchen wares and baby items. If the bride's family has a lot of money, then you can see items like refrigerator, big gas cooker and oven...etc.

In the past my mum said they were always given sewing machines. So I guess the items are modified to meet the times.

I am surprised people are casting aspersions on Southern women because many places in Igboland practise this. I wouldn't know why it doesn't get as much noise as the marriage list.

Because, it has no specification on what will be brought by the bride and not even compulsory. It is just a way of assisting and no law abiding it and what should be provided.

When people like you posts this kind of thing, it tells me one thing, that you are not yet exposed especially in traveling matters.

I have been to South Africa and there are alot of Yorubas living there even before many Igbos could dream of coming there. The position that the Yoruba guy holds there shows you his relevance there.

When, I also travel to India for business, It was a Yoruba guy that I saw a brown powdered drug for the first time, I didn't bother asking him the name because, I have no interest whether in selling of making use of it. He only relay that to me because he says , I don't behave like an average Igbo person that other tribes sometimes say that they are loud, boastful and all that.

Major difference I find about Yorubas and Igbos living abroad is that Yorubas are more calm and absorb more in the society by not drawing much attention to themselves even when committing crimes while that can't be said about some Igbos guys that overdo things raising their chances of been caught. If, you have the resources, travel more, it is a very critical education that can't be taught anywhere
