SUNDAY, 01 NOVEMBER 2015 Absolute Obedience Demanded -EXODUS 24:1-11 Key Verse: “And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do” (Exodus 24:3). One major undoing of king Saul was his partial obedience to God’s word. He received divine commission through prophet Samuel to utterly destroy the Amalekites, sparing no man or animal. He complied, but not completely. He spared Agag, their king, and the best of their animals. By this act, he earned God’s judgment. The resolve of the Israelites, in today’s text contrasts sharply with the action of Saul. Here, Moses who had been away on Mount Sinai got back to the people and acquainted them with all the commandments, laws and ordinances from God. Their response was “…and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do.” Moses therefore put the laws in writing, read it out to them and ratified the covenant with sacrifices. The congregation of Israel reiterated their commitment to obey God. Although it has been shown that pledge and performance do not always match, the people’s attitude is quite instructive. The implication of their resolve to obey God is that every one of them was prepared to comply with every word of the Lord. Moses had stated God’s terms clearly before them so that their decision would be by choice. As we are privileged to have the whole counsel of God and to be inheritors of the covenant of grace, we should be more committed to obey every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. When you choose what to obey in God’s commandments, you may end up like Saul, who inadvertently, earned God’s disfavour. “...To obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” Thought for the day: Absolute obedience is what it takes to please God. |
Saturday, 31 October, 2015 Damning Tendencies -REVELATION 18:1-8 Key Verse: “How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow” (Revelation 18:7). To the natural mind, it is inconceivable that this world, with all its glitz and glamour, would be totally destroyed one day. Some wondered that, “how can it be that with all its impressive, intimidating structural and social development, the flourishing economic progress, and the new heights that man has attained in the quest to conquer the earth, it would be destroyed?” It is thus, not plausible to them that in one day, all would be wiped out. God’s programme is neither open to debate nor subject to man’s sanction. The fact is that Babylon - a metaphorical name for the present world and its evil system - would be destroyed soon. All those who exclude God from their considerations, relish worldly goods, will be swept away. Even if they have exploited the world’s system to their selfish benefits, they would be brought to account for their deeds on the judgment day. Just as they glorified themselves and lived luxuriously, so would they be tormented and made sorrowful on that day. What they feared most would befall them. They would face death, mourning and famine. The whole world would be burned with fire, as determined by the Lord. Hence, it is dangerous to focus one’s attention on the world, exploit the sinful pleasures in the world or yield to temptations to take advantage of the evil system in the world to amass great wealth for oneself. This may bring one great fame, pleasure, security and comfort; but make one to trust self and not God. Therefore, we must then shun all tendencies to live like the world and follow Christ’s example of obedience, truthfulness, sacrifice and service to God and to our fellow men. Thought for the day: Remember, what the world offers ends in the world |
Friday, 30 October, 2015 Wisdom Is Key -JAMES 4:1-17 Key Verse: “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14). The strong pull of worldliness creates conflicts that are harmful to the growth of our faith. The pursuit of its pleasures produces covetousness, envy, fighting and arrogance. The believer’s only alternative is submission to God with a humble and repentant heart. This will produce a transformed attitude towards others as well. Submission and humility will help the Christian to avoid falling into the temptation of becoming proud, unjust and selfish. In the passage under consideration, James points out that believers must make appropriate and judicious use of their short life while on earth. He goes further to underscore the need for them to totally handover their lives to God for direction, as self-management is destructive as it is not Christian-like. He also admonishes believers to tally their plans with the purpose of God for their lives. If you have been living without involving Christ to direct the affairs of your life, you can begin today. James also warned against the mad crave for materialism regardless of the source. These days, some believers have embraced all means in their desperation to defeat poverty and make money. To them, the end justifies the means. Let us not forget that “a man’s life does not consist of the abundance of the things he possesses”. No matter how long a man lives on earth, there comes a day when he must bid the world good-bye. In the concluding verse of the chapter, James notes: “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” Let this principle be your guide today. Thought for the day: Life is like a vapour. |

Severity Of God’s Wrath- JEREMIAH 13:1-14"Key Verse:*“And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them” (Jeremiah 13:14).*" Shortly before his death, a friend of William Claude Dukenfield, an American comedian, actor and writer, visited him in hospital. He was surprised to find Dukenfield flipping through a Bible and he curiously asked him what he was doing with it. Dukenfield replied, “I’m looking for loopholes”. The people of Judah could also be said to be looking for loopholes in the Bible. They had a penchant for disobeying God due to their association with neighbouring nations. God, therefore, decided to punish them. In symbolic language, God instructed Jeremiah to purchase a linen waistband and wear it without washing it, which he did. Later, the Lord told him to take his waistband to Euphrates and hide it there in a hole of the rock. After a while, God asked him to return to Euphrates and retrieve the waistband. When he did this, he found out that the waistband had become ruined beyond usefulness. God’s initial purpose was for Judah and Jerusalem to cling closely to Him and become an ornament of glory. Unfortunately, they had turned to worship idols. They had tarnished themselves and got spoiled by contact with the polluting influences of other nations. Their stubborn attitudes to worship other gods made God angry with them. So, He decided to destroy their pride, just as the waistband was destroyed. Those who refuse to learn from the past are often condemned to relive it. Judah failed to learn from Samaria’s mistakes, and drew herself inexorably into utter ruin and perdition. Just like Judah, many people still refuse to learn from God’s indignation upon the impenitent. It is only while suffering from their iniquities that they belatedly begin to call upon God. Don’t wait until it is too late before amending your ways. The time is now. Tomorrow might be too late. *Thought for the day: *Beware of God’s severity and wrath |
Wednesday, 28 October, 2015 Obedience Through Faith -HEBREWS 11:17-22 Key Verse: “By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son” (Hebrews 11:17). Our text, which gives a catalogue of people who exhibited absolute faith in God, discloses Abraham’s greatest trial of life and how he overcame. Isaac, his only son by Sarah, his wife, was earmarked for sacrifice. God had earlier promised that through Isaac, He would bless mankind. With this development, Abraham obviously found himself in a dilemma. Should he kill Isaac as God commanded, how would the promise be fulfilled? And, if he refused to do what God asked him, would the promise still be there? Finally, he decided to ignore his personal inclination, and do what He told him to do. For Abraham, God must find a way to keep His promise. What a challenge for all. Isaac believed what God promised his father when he blessed his two sons, Jacob and Esau. Jacob, when he was about to die, equally blessed Joseph’s two sons – Ephraim and Manasseh. Joseph, who also believed and trusted God’s promises, was sure that He would deliver the Israelites from Egypt and asked his family to take his bones along with them to the land of Canaan after his demise. How many of us have such an unalloyed faith as Abraham, who overlooked his own predilection to please God? How many of us could comfort ourselves like Isaac, who built upon what God promised his father to have a better future? There are many who still scoff at God’s promises. Despite all odds, our confidence should be in Christ, not in man; our sustenance should be in things He provides, not in things we receive through strife and vainglory. Until we re-order our lives to fully trust God, we will not please Him completely and unreservedly. Thought for the day: The difference between an overcomer and the defeated is faith. Wednesday, 27 October, 2015 Christ's Healing Power -JOHN 5:1-16"Key Verse:*"Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the Sabbath" (John 5:8,9).*" Our text sufficiently reveals the power of Christ to heal any deformity. Jesus never isolated Himself from people, except from sin. He fellowshipped with them on a regular basis, at the temple, and also celebrated the Passover with them. On a particular occasion, when He went to worship at Jerusalem, He met a man who had an infirmity sitting at a pool called Bethesda. It was generally believed then that an angel would come on a certain season to stir the pool and anyone who first stepped into it would be instantly healed. But this man had been siting by the pool for thirty-eight years, hoping to receive his healing. When Jesus got there, this man became a cynosure of interest to Him. He asked the man if he would appreciate being healed. The question possibly looked strange. Jesus possibly wanted the man to look at Him to be able to make his faith come alive. The man gladly accepted the offer and was cured immediately, to the surprise of many people. But the Jewish leaders, who ought to have appreciated the wonderful act of God became bitter, hinging their anger on nonobservance of the Sabbath. When Jesus later saw the man in the temple, He warned him to desist from sin, which probably suggested that there was a connection between his illness and sin. Clearly, sin is a barrier to receiving God's blessings. Faith is equally important; without it, it is impossible to obtain anything from Him. The reaction of the Jews indicates that it's not everybody that would like to rejoice with you at the moment of your miracle. The man, in spite of the Jewish leaders attitude, did not hold it against them. This is equally instructive, that we should not have ill feeling towards anybody. Jesus is our Refuge and Strength; a very present Help in trouble who will always remember those who trust in Him.*Thought for the day: *Jesus is our Helper and Healer. |

Monday, 26 October, 2015 Discovering God’s Voice -ISAIAH 20:1-6 Key Verse: “At the same time spake the LORD by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot” (ISAIAH 20:2). It is futile to add to God’s word as adequately catalogued in the Bible. The Book is full, faultless and fortified with power. Isaiah was told by God to appear in public, stripped of his clothes for three years. He was to walk barefooted. This was a sign of humiliation and shame to an average man. Isaiah readily obeyed God, and carried out this divine assignment single-mindedly, not minding the social embarrassment associated with it. History has it that Isaiah freely moved in the court and advised kings and the nobles. He equally identified with the poor, the lowly, the oppressed, the widows and victims of injustice and exploitation. God spoke through him to Judah and Jerusalem in the days of many backslidden kings and emperors. The revelation of God in the Scriptures is not only for believers alone, it applies to both saints and sinners. God spoke through Isaiah to demonstrate the fierce and terrible humiliation and shame that Egypt and Ethiopia would suffer at the hands of the Assyrians. This message was equally applicable to Judah as a nation, that put her trust in other nations for help rather than in the God of their fathers. The lesson for today can be summarized in the words of Apostle Paul, thus; “whatsoever things are written aforetime were written for our learning…” (Romans 15:4). God speaks to us through His Word to regulate our lives. Believers must always be ready to hear and obey Him even in matters that may seemingly bring shame, humiliation and persecution. God’s word can only be received and truly acted upon by those who are renewed. They are empowered to hear Him whenever He speaks and enjoy His manifold blessings. Thought for the day: When His message comes to you, there is but only one thing to do, just obey. Bible Reading in one Year: PROVERBS 15 - 17 |
Sunday, 25 October, 2015 What A Great Change! -ACTS 9:23-31 Key Verse: “And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him” (Acts 9:23). When someone becomes truly born-again, the evidence are very clear. Apart from the changed lifestyle and conduct, there is also a dramatic change in virtually every other sphere of life. As we look at our text today, this is what we see. Paul, who was once an admired champion of the Jews, suddenly became the target of their assassination plot. He had previously championed the persecution of Christians. He masterminded the killing and imprisonment of many of them. It was even while he was on the way for the same mission that he had the unforgettable encounter with Christ. Now that he was born again, he switched loyalty. He was no longer loyal to the cause of the Jews but had become a bond slave of Christ. He now preached the gospel he once denounced and sought the fellowship of the Christians he once despised. The change that took place in his life left no doubt in any one that he had truly encountered Christ. What a great change! When someone becomes truly born again, the changes cannot be hidden. It is not only his life and conduct that will change, his associates and friends too will. His focus and pursuit, ambitions and goals, will all become turned around. Paul now has only one goal, which is to do whatever the Lord wants. As heaven rejoices over his conversion, so does hell roar in anger. Are you newly converted and wonder why those who once loved you now turn their backs on you? Does it make you feel you have taken a wrong decision? Not at all! You are just on the right track. The changes that you see in you and the oppositions they now attract are enough evidence to show you are now a new creature. Like Paul, you don’t have to be discouraged or ashamed of your new found faith. Seek out and fellowship with the people of God. Thought for the day: It is difficult to hide a life that is truly changed Bible Reading in one Year: PROVERBS 12 - 14 |
Saturday, 24 October, 2015 Publish It Everywhere -LUKE 7:19-30"Key Verse:*“Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached" (LUKE 7:22).*" Years ago, a woman became distraught because she had no opportunity to serve the Lord the way she wanted. She claimed she could not work in the church because most of her time was used to take care of her large family. But the Holy Spirit let her know that she could testify of Christ to the people who made deliveries to her home. She did exactly so. It proved a great relief as the word of God was ministered to many who received Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. Thereafter, she found immense joy in the Lord. Our Lord Jesus Christ led the way in showing that the good news of salvation should not be hindered by any means. Wherever He found Himself and under any circumstances, He preached the gospel. In the text today, He seized the opportunity of a visit of the emissaries from John the Baptist to declare the constituents of the gospel. John was in prison for standing for the truth and holiness. He sent to know if Jesus was the promised Messiah. “…Tell John,” Jesus replied, “what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached”. Jesus used John’s enquiry at a difficult time for the followers of John the Baptist to preach. This is the sum of the purpose of Jesus’ ministry on earth. Every occasion and place was fertile ground for preaching the word of God. Preaching is not to be undertaken only in the church or on meeting days. It must be done everywhere. “Therefore, they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word” (Acts 8:4). God assures believers who obey the great commission that they shall return not only with signs and wonders, but also with a great harvest of saved souls.*Thought for the day: *Genuine believers use every moment for evangelism.*Bible Reading in one Year: *PROVERBS 9 - 11 |
Friday, 23 October, 2015 The Secret Place Of The Most High -PSALM 91:1-16 Key Verse: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1). A child is never more confident than when he is in his father’s arms. To him, the father is a superman – no matter how frail the father might be in reality. When threatened by any bully, he runs into those arms and his fear disappears like a shooting star. If there is a rampage, the child looks up to the father and trusts that he is up to any task. The secret place of the Most High and the shadow of the Almighty offers a surer ground of confidence for a child of God than any mortal father can provide. Psalm 91, sums up the invaluable benefits that accrue to those who dwell in God’s secret place. The secret place of the Almighty is not a physical structure. It is a spiritual state of being in which the faith and life of a believer align with God’s holiness and by that, draws down His power and presence. It is a life of intimate communion with God – a life “within the veil.” Only those who dwell in this state can abide under the shadow of the Almighty. That shadow depicts God’s nearness to His children. It is not enough to memorize, recite or claim the content of this psalm, one have to be sure that he actually resides in the secret place, where God’s power and presence is seen in his life. There can be no better place to be in this troublous world. Dwellers in God’s secret place are here promised peculiar and comprehensive packages of blessings. The blessings include: protection, preservation, privileges, provision, power, promotion and permanence (longevity). Dwelling in God’s secret place is not another expression for belonging to a “living church” or being actively involved with religion. It entails walking through the veil that Christ’s shed blood has ripped open into God’s holiness. If you are still outside that realm, go to God with penitence and faith in Christ. Get cleansed and consecrated to God. Thought for the day: If you are not experiencing God’s power in your life, then He is not there. Bible Reading in one Year: PROVERBS 7 - 8 |
Thursday, 22 October, 2015 Genuine Faith -JOHN 4:43-54 Key Verse: “Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way” (John 4:50). Abraham Kuyper, said: “When principles that run against your deepest convictions begin to win the day, then battle is your calling, and peace has become sin. You must, at the price of dearest peace, lay your convictions bare before friend and enemy, with all the fire of your faith.” Though our text x-rays the unquestionable authority of Jesus over every situation, it significantly noted the genuine faith of an official of the king in Capernaum. When Jesus left Samaria, He went to Galilee, a region where He grew up, and performed His first miracle of turning water into wine at Cana. He knew the mind of the people and told them, without mincing words, that a prophet must have respect, except in his own country. When the king’s official in Capernaum heard that Jesus had arrived Galilee from Judea and that He was in Cana, he made efforts to see Him. He didn’t consider the distance from Capernaum to Cana, a distance of about 32 kilometres (20 miles), as a barrier because he desperately wanted Jesus to heal his son who was at the point of death. Jesus did not go to Capernaum with the official. Instead, He told the man that his son would live. The man sincerely believed because he trusted Jesus completely. Some people in our contemporary time have little regard for Christ. They make themselves more important than Him; they have wavering faith towards Him. Some even seek only miracles and not Christ. The official’s son was about 32 kilometres away from where Jesus was, yet He was able to cure him through the authority of His word. This shows that distance is not a barrier to receiving answers to prayers. So trust in Jesus; you will receive answers to your prayers. Wednesday, 21 October, 2015 Duty To The Society -MATTHEW 17:22-27 Key Verse: “Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee" (MATTHEW 17:27). There are some Christian sects who misunderstand the doctrine of believers’ separation from the world. They think this has to do with having nothing to do with the laws that govern their nation. They consider it idolatrous and worldly to sing the National Anthem or take part in any civic duty expected of the citizens of the country. Since Christians are not of the world, then they must not have anything to do with the world, they think. Yet, the example of Christ in our text today shows us that as Christians, we must be responsible citizens of our country. Though He had right not to pay the temple tax, still, He went ahead to pay, demonstrating to us that we must be law-abiding and peace-loving. As Christians, we have the duty to positively influence our land and community with the gospel as “salts” and “lights.” We must be careful that we do not make our gospel unsavoury and detestable to the people through our unfriendly and repulsive lifestyle. If we are to win the world, then we must be good citizens. The life and examples of the Lord Jesus demonstrate to us how we ought to live as Christians. Those who look away from Christ always fall into the error of extremism, fanaticism and hypocrisy. Christians should take the lead in performing their necessary civic responsibilities. They should not dodge tax or duties or present false information concerning their earnings in order to pay less tax on their income. It is not ideal to present false documents so as to pay less duty on importations. It is our duty to protect public properties from being vandalized and ensure we conduct ourselves peacefully always. Nothing must be done to reproach the gospel or the name of Christ. Thought for the day: Failure to perform civic responsibilities is a mark of shallow spiritual life. Tuesday, 20 October,2015 Quiet Please!- NUMBERS 14:1-10"Key Verse:*"And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!" (Numbers 14:2).*" A song writer scripted: “Quiet please, too much has already been said, just let it be and learn to listen instead, for sometimes thro’ the silence, big problems become small and if you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all”. In our text today, the genesis of the murmurings of the children of Israel was the faithless report of the ten out of twelve spies that Moses sent out to spy out the land of Canaan. After they had told the congregation about the presence of the descendants of the Anaks in the land and frantically insisted it would be suicidal for Israel to attempt to go against the giants, the people’s heart sank. Even then, the people’s reactions worsened the situation. Whereas they could have kept quiet and urged their leader Moses to seek the intervention of God, they began to talk about their desire to die in the open wilderness. Believers must be cautious in responding to any information, however unfavourable. Rather than pass comments that may injure the faith of others, we must learn to keep quiet in desperate moments. Believers must live a life of few words, reacting to situations by absolutely trusting in the Lord. In the days we live, there are heart- rending pieces of information that fly about. We must learn to talk less but pray more. Today, people die of heart-related challenges because of the dysfunctional information they received. People are depressed, and many are lying critically ill in hospitals nursing avoidable health crisis because of words spoken unadvisedly which they allowed to clog their minds. As believers, how we respond to unfavourable news differentiates us from unbelievers who have no trust in God. If we fret and fear the same way those who have not known Christ do, where then lies the faith we profess. Monday 19 October 2015 Submission To Higher Powers -ROMANS 13:1-7"Key Verse:*“Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour” (Romans 13:7).*" The world is filled with Satan’s inspired ego; the ego that rebels against constituted authorities and promotes anarchy and disorder in the society. At the time of writing the book of Romans, the civilized world was under the colonial rule of the Roman empire. Nationalists, zealots and patriots in many countries viewed the Roman authorities as occupiers, strangers and robbers of their nations’ wealth. So, they decided to antagonize and possibly fight off the Romans. Paul the apostle exhorted Christians in all the occupied countries to have a different view of authorities. Firstly, “all the powers that be, are ordained of God”. Nobody seizes power behind God. Secondly, authorities are put in place to avoid anarchy and to ensure the well-being of citizens. Paul then cautioned against rebellion by Christians as it is synonymous with rebelling against God. Paul’s counsel resonates accurately today as many Christians, ignorantly and for tribal or ethnic reasons, will readily join in antagonizing people in governments. Christians are to pray to correct any anomaly observed in constituted authorities. We are the light and salt of the world. Christians are not human right activists. They are agents of the Prince of peace. Believers must shun recourse to disobey constituted authorities whom unbelievers wantonly disdain. There is no power on earth that is ordained that does not have God’s tacit knowledge. Our stance therefore, is not to align with the bandwagon of evil doers and politicians. As the light of the world, believers must distinguish themselves through obedience to lawful dictates of government.*Thought for the day: *“Submit yourself to constituted authorities”.*Bible Reading in one Year: *REVELATION 18 - 20 |
