What you have described under PAYE is incorrect or rather not very clear.


You do not pay 15% on your salary if you earn between 800k and 3m. You pay 15% on what is leftover after deducting the tax free earnings.

So if you earn 800k, as you stated, you pay 0 tax. However, if you earn 850k, you only pay 15% on the 50k and not on the 850k . And if you earn 3m you pay 15% on the 2.2m not on 3m.

You get can additional tax relief if you rent . You get 20% of your annual rent deducted as well. So if you earn 900k, you remove the 800k tax free allowance . If you live in a 1m naira rental property, you deduct 20% of 1m which is 200k so if you earn 900k, you pay no tax.

Note that the rental deduction is up to a maximum of 500k....so even if you pay 4m rental, you dont get 800k deduction, you get only 500k.

Now what if you earn 5m...first you deduct 800k. You have 4.2m left. You then pay 15% on the next 2.2m and then 18% on the remaining 2m...and so on. So your salary is taxed in two different percentages. So 5m salary doesnt mean you pay 18% tax outright but 15% on the 2.2m and 18%on the remaining 2m.

Doesnt matter, the effective tax rate are still too high for each tax brackets for a low income economy like Nigeria. You are competiting for investment with other countries so you should use tax rate that are competitive. For example the US has federal income effective tax brackets 10%, 12%, 22%, 24% and 35% (for millionaires income earners and yet many of them legally avoid it using tax loop holes) and this is a very wealthy country with very high income earners. Nigeria tax brackets should be way lower like 8%, 12%, 15%, 18% and maybe 20% at the highest end for a low income economy to encourage a lot of ppl to pay tax.

Some of these are a overkill. For example the tax on gratuity or pension makes no sense, thats like double taxation after already making tax deduction on salary. Also witholding on rent is just an over reach. Nobody should pay additional tax after rent. This will have a negative effect and may never achieve its intended purpose as ppl may avoid bank transfers altogether.

Imagine paying PAYE, VAT, WHT at the same time? too much, they should consolidate instead. Govt should be encouraging ppl to pay tax not discourage them with multiple taxation.

Like the popular saying that "a prophet lacks honor in his home town" it is easier for an immigrant to notice opportunities and take advantage of it than for the citizens who will generally see same as challenges and would feel entitled to government assistance. There different categories of immigrants coming to Nigeria; the investors, the blue collar expatriate and the oppurtunistic enterpreneur. Many indians and some chinese fall in the blue collar category, you can put these ones greener pastures category. There are also many chinese / lebanese/ indian/ other investors bringing million of dollars in foreign investment into Nigeria many investing in oil/gas/steel/manufacturing
etc. Finally you have the opportunistic enterpreneur who see challenges in Nigeria and built solutions and startup for it, a good example is opay, jumia and gokada. The latter you need so much because they employ a lot of Nigerians. Every country is looking for this last category, infact many countries spend a lot and give incentives to attract them.

Many here are saying yes they have cheap capital thats why they are investong here. Quite the opposite. There are many Nigerians here and in the diaspora with loads of cash and capital that are not ready to take even the slightest risk of investing in Nigeria but these foreigners are. They rather prefer to buy expensive cars, private jets, buy multiple properties, hotels and bars everywhere or keep it in foreign banks or crypto.

Zaki Biam massacre: The killing of more than 200 unarmed civilians by the army in several communities in Benue State (often collectively referred to as the Zaki Biam massacre) occurred in October 2001. 

4. So many corruption cases sprung up from 1999 - 2007 including the Obasanjo’s personal endless corrupt practices centred around building of his Obasanjo Presidential Library, Bells University among others.

5. Obasanjo practically installed his successor in an election that was noted for massive irregularities and malpractices. This administration he installed gave birth to the Boko Haram terrorists which he once went to visit in Borno state without any reasonable head way.

6. He had the opportunity to RESET Nigeria in the early stage of a new democracy, but he went about victimising oppositions, pursuing selfish agendas and looking for unnecessary international recognition at the detriment of Nigeria’s future.

I wont call him the worst because no one can beat Abacha but He was definitely not a good president. The fact he easily released a sovereign land to Cameroun without a fight is treasonous. I have never seen any country willingly cede their land without a war or invasion and a resource filled one at that. It was short sighted and cowardly of him.

I've experienced both and I can categorically say that Democracy in Nigeria is worse. The third mainland bridge we have today is made by the military. If a good military head wants to make roads, bridges or any infrastructure at all, just know that it will be done 100% well, but let a democratic president of Nigerian try it, that structure will even collapse before he finishes his tenure.
All we can ask for is a good Military man who really have the country at heart, then watch how all policies will be effectively implemented and everything done in orderliness.

All these democratic presidents are just wasting our time.

You are either too young or just suffering from recency bias. Nigeria had 30 years of military rule and there was no single good man among them. No major infrastructure was started and completed by them. The third mainland was started by shagari and he would completed it if he was allowed to finish his term not overthrown.

The khaki boys started all the problems nigeria has now from abolishing federalism to instituting corruption and massive looting, filling the civil service with a section of the country.

Babangida and Abacha regime were the worst. They brought all kinds of vices to the society; civil service corruption, Pervasive armed robbery, looting billions of dollars into swizz bank accounts, year long ASUU strikes, zero press freedom they close down any media that write opposing article; tell magazine etc, kaduna riots of 80s and 90s killing many christians, killed the education and universities. Lecturers were poorly paid until obj increased their salary. Doctors became poor with terrible pay even japa was almost impossible in the 90s.

So tell me what good thing about the military?

That is wrong. The core function of a civil engineer is design and planning. They can also supervise large constructions. Like every engineering discipline, the main function of a civil engineer is to create project (engineering) designs and blue prints and supervise its execution.

you lots are funny, architects are artists? Do you know what goes in into designing a functional space? Have you heard of ZONING? Building orientation? Even what you claim structural engineers know, architect still do know them. Most of you don’t know the difference between CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS and 3D VISUALIZATION I guess. Can a structural engineer produce a well detailed construction drawings?

There is a reason why architecture is placed in the faculty of environmental studies. It is not a real science, its more intuition, aesthetics and urban planning/regulation. And no, an architectect cant do nothing with those calculations, they cant even understand or phantom them. Can they calculate load stress/tension in complex structures? No. It requires detailed understanding of physics / mechanics and application of differential calculus. That is why you dont need hard requirement for mathematics/physics to study architecture but require one to be an engineer.

I am not talking about building 1/3 storey buildings here, any draftsman can draw that up. Designing and building complex structures need a detailed engineering design and drawings. Exclusive preserve of engineers.

hmm, what are you saying exactly? So it’s architect’s that can’t do what civil engineers do? Every professional in the construction industry is important.

An Architect is simply an artist with some technical drawing skill just a little bit above a draftsman. A civil engineer dont just draw, they design. A lot of mathematical calculation and physics goes into those designs. So a civil engineer is superior to an architect. For very large construction projects, infact you dont need an architect.

If they dont trust Nigeria military to use the weapon, is it American soldiers who have no familiarity with the area that will do a better job.
