The bell at St. Patrick's Cathedral chimed, signalling the time. We didn't need anyone to tell us what to do next as we hurried back into our homes, making sure our doors were closed.

‘You think everybody made it in this time?’ asked Charlie, my husband.

‘I don’t know, Charles. Quit breathing on the back of my neck,’ I shrugged angrily, rubbing my hand on the doorknob. My hands were trembling, and I couldn't bring myself to leave the door. It was like this whenever it was nearing dusk, and we were rarely given a choice.

'Oh, I really hope no one dies this time,' Charles breathed behind me, expressing his nervousness. He was the weak one, while I was the one who never showed fear. But God, I was dying inside, but I couldn't show it. All I cared about was the day passing without any casualties.

‘Wait. Where’s Mary?’ I asked, terrified, realising it was just us.

Mary was my sister’s child. She had her when she was fourteen and fled with her lover while she left us in charge. The girl was nowhere in sight. ‘That pig…!’ I snarled, knowing she was outside. She knew we all had to stay inside once the church bell rang, as it signalled danger.

‘I thought she was with you?’

I turned to look at the annoying figure who claimed to be my husband. He was undoubtedly going to get it. ‘You fucker, don’t start with me!’ I growled and gave him an angry stare. 'Well, someone has got to get her.' I shot him another look, which he understood.

‘No, no. I'm not going anywhere,' he said, lifting his hands in the air to show he wasn't completely on board with the plan.

‘Coward.’ I scoffed, then reached for the rifle beside me and opened the door. ‘And just when I thought the man of the house would finally step up,'

He shrugged and took a step backward.

'Wait here.'

He attempted to speak, 'Um, dear...'

'Be quiet, you crackbrain.' I hushed him and stepped outside. Even though I despised Mary, my heart still couldn't let her go. I needed to find her but had to move quickly. I took a deep breath and walked quietly, ignoring the fresh breeze that blew my auburn hair back and forth. ‘Where the hell could she be?’ I saw no sign of her, not even a single soul. The street was empty, and the entire area was extremely quiet. I bet if someone threw a pin, people nearby and beyond could hear it just right.

I walked quietly along the sidewalk. My heart was racing, pulling me backward towards my small cabin. But I couldn't go back without Mary. Not that I couldn't if I wanted, but she was family. My blood. I wasn't going to let her pay for her mother's sins, much less let her die. I wanted to yell out her name in the hopes that she would hear me, but my mouth was completely shut. My throat was clogged, as if it had been held in place to prevent me from making a sound.

‘Aunt Theresa…?’ I heard a voice. It sounded just like Mary. Oh, no! I had turned and looked in the direction where they wanted me. No, no. I could hear them now. They were getting closer. Run, Theresa. Run! It was all I could think about as I stood motionless, making no effort to run. Run! Then I suddenly regained consciousness. ‘Bleep this!’ I said in a more aggressive tone, as if I was back in my body, albeit partially scared. ‘Charles...!’ I called as I started running back.

The door was still tightly shut, and I was almost ready to mount the porch, still waiting for an answer from my husband inside. ‘Charles!’ I swear I had tripped several times while getting back up on the porch, yearning to be inside. ‘Charles!’ Still no response. I banged on the door, begging to be let in, but I was being punished for all my terrible deeds. ‘Charles, please…’ I begged, but no response came.

'How nice to join us, Theresa Jones.'

I shut my eyes, dreading not looking while still banging on the door. 'Goddamn you, Charles! Open the door!

‘How very nice…’

Their sinister laughter was all I could hear, and it was the very last.
Great grin

Some of you did worse than the child, only that you weren't caught... This is just a boy who doesn't know much about life, he isn't a criminal and might have been exposed to the wrong thing at an early age.
I strongly disagree with you
I bet you won't be saying this if the minor was your daughter
