Story : PRIVATE LESSON TEACHER.

Episode 1

Passing out parade has come and gone, I will definitely miss my friends, my PPA, my environment in ota, a lot of thoughts were running through my mind as I was packing and arranging my loads. I begin to ask myself, “after service year then what next?”.I had tried to apply for jobs during my service year but I couldn’t get a befitting job. My friends that were born with a silver spoon had jobs waiting for them at home, “Which kind wahala be this?”, I picked my bag, board a bus to akure. On getting home, my family and neighbours welcomed me, it was as if a white man came on a visit. People are asking me questions, some were greeting, some were asking for what I brought.As days rolled by, I begin to search for what to do, I moved round the town to see if I could get a job somewhere. One day while I was passing by on the 3rd street, I saw a woman coming out of a mighty duplex, the house was painted white,. She was pasting a notice on her gate as I was passing by. I moved closer to see the what she was pasting,and on it I saw ” A home lesson teacher wanted URGENTLY”.Chaiii, I ignored at first and moved on. After walking about 8 steps. I stopped and think. ***** why I go refuse this job na?, dem be rich people ooo, sodem fit pay.*****, I stopped thinking, I went back the house, I knocked on the gate and the gateman ushered me in. the gateman took me to the the door entrance, called out the woman and left,
ME: good afternoon ma
MADAM: good afternoon young man, how can I help you?ME: I saw you pasting a notice the other time and I decided to apply.
MADAM: you mean the home tutor job?
ME: Yes
MADAM: hope u passed your WAEC? And how was the result?.

When God declared His name as "I am", "Yahweh" and "Jehovah" to the Israelites and was leading them out of Egypt, who was God to the Arabs at that time, and how were they worshiping him?

It is with great sense of privilege that I present this piece to commemorate the birthday ceremony of Ishola Ezeaka Chidozie. I was overwhelmed when I was notified to present a write up on the d day. I never saw myself as a scholar but then he told me scholars are not only those that graduated with a first class. Ever since then , scholar is a title I now guide jealously
I'm happy to wish him a happy birthday on this day and to also thank God for keeping him till today.
The idea of birthday celebration can be traced to ancient times . This is affirmed by the book of Psalms chapter 90 vs 12. This verse points to a fact that birthday celebration affords one the opportunity to take a retrospect in order to consider the present and subsequently plan for the future.

We were about 160 in class then and Ishola through divine arrangement happened to be our class governor.He knew everyone's matric number off hand as well as the phone number.
Now to the topic of discussion. It is worthy of note to state that the topic came to me while using the rest room. This shows idea is not subject to time or location, it comes as it wills. It also shows how one can utilize one's loo time and how ideas can come into the brain while water showers on one's head and spines.
Codeine is an opioid pain medication. An opioid is sometimes called narcotic and it is similar to opium. .It is common in cough syrup. Opium is known to create hallucination in users as well as creating a sort of relief that however doesn't last. It only kills the pain but doesn't necessarily take away the pains.
Among the side effects of overdose on codeine include confusion,hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behaviour,drowsiness and fainting. Worthy of note is that an extreme dosage can lead to coma or ultimately death.
From all these side effects, one can safely assert without mincing words that the country is obviously overdosed on the substance.
Nigeria is a giant that is in a great sleep as evident in every sector and system of the country. Almost every institution in the country is deep asleep. It will take a blast from Gabriel's trumpet to awaken the giant who seems to be so deep in sleep that it may at any time slip into comatose if things are not promptly checked. However, it is a dilemma as the giant should not be left to die in his sleep nor should the giant be slapped to death in the process of waking him up
As earlier stated about the side effects of codeine, one can see the confusion that exists in every sector of the country. Take for instance the judiciary arm of government. It is now a common practice for judges to give conflicting judgments which always cause confusion.
Also, unusual thought and behaviour is common in the country as many situations defiles the laws of logic/rational reasoning. Absurdities in other lands are what we celebrate over here. Who can rationalize how a person convicted of money laundering in foreign land would be welcomed with ovation by his people who he laundered their money? Someone who should literally be welcomed with clubs and cudgel.
Nigeria and Nigerians often times defile the laws of logic. For instance , the law of contradiction that states that one cannot be both P and non P That is, for all propositions p, it is impossible for both p and not p to be true.i.e. Something cannot be an apple and at the same time be something else other than an apple. Something cannot be itself and at the same time be it's opposite but this doesn't work in Nigeria. This is how one can be corrupt and yet be appointed to dine with the kings of the land. This automatically confers the title of Saint on such corrupt individual. That is why it is often the case to see law makers and law enforcers to commonly be the law breakers. What an irony , an absurdity and a contradiction of what they ought to be .
A graduate is expected to be learned but in Nigeria,one can be a graduate and yet be an illiterate . Hence, the common phrase "educated illiterate"
Many,who, by virtue of their certificates, are expected to reason in a logical manner are often found wanting due to their non sequitur statements.
It is either many do not harken to the voice of reason or possibly I fallaciously assumed that all have the voice
Our system is so porous that it creates a lot of loop holes from which our money is draining away. This can be corroborated by a legal term that "opportunity makes the thief". A lot of people who wouldn't be tempted not to talk of falling for it if they were to be in some other saner climes are exposed to situations that make them compromise their moral underpinnings. It is therefore easy to have corrupt opportunities here than in places where things work as they should. This coruption is the bane of our society and it has eaten deep into its fabrics.
I can go on and on but space would not permit. Also, most of the problems militating against are not alien to even a young child. I only mentioned just an insignificant number of the problems.
Although it is common to read in newspapers columnists and editors write about the problems facing Nigeria without professing any solution to it. However I will not be following that path. The solution which I subscribe to is one out of the many solutions available which also manifests in other solutions. It is the education of the populace. There is the need to make a large majority of the citizens educated. It should be noted that education here is not just about some schooling. It is wider and more comprehensive and it starts from birth and ends at death. What is education? Who is an educated man? What type of education? What purpose should the education serve? Etc. These and many other questions have not been asked by many Nigerians
Education,broadly speaking ,is any act or experience that has formative effect on the mind, character and physical abilities of an individual
An educated man is therefore a knowledgeable man who possesses the ability to think effectively,communicate his thoughts,make relevant judgements, discriminate among values and make wise decisions in order to function well as a member of his environment. An educated man must be able to take corrections without prejudice.
It should be noted that the main feature of education is funtionality. But the question is what function can we perform with our education? Can a graduate of mechanical engineering repair his car? Can an Agricultural Science graduate manage a personal farm effectively? All these are rational questions we should ask ourself as a nation and if all we get is a resounding no, then a lot has to be done about our education.
The function of education has evolved pass when it was to be able to Read,wRite, and do aRithmetic (3R's) in order to take up teaching , clerical and interpreter work. This was when the yardstick for measuring an educated man was how sophisticated he could be in speaking english and the evident inferiority complex of our people back then which can still be perceived through some of its remnant elements in contemporary time. This was evident in names such as Osuntoyinbo, Oguntoyinbo,Fagboyinbo, etc. This is the more reason a professor of yoruba may not be accorded his due respect if he doesn't speak the English language with so much display of sophistication and impeccability. However, this does not rule out that he professes great ideas in his field. He is only a victim of "a people's misplaced prjority."
From the foregoing, there is need to make compulsory the teaching of mother tongue in schools. Many developed European nations make use of their language to teach their students even though they still offer English as a subject. Our heritage is lost as well as our value. This is because language is a major means of transmitting culture from one generation to the other. So what happens when the language is lost? Your guess is as good as mine. We cannot talk of Nigerian culture or values anymore when these values have been eroded. For values to return and for the nation to be great and wake up from the slumber , emphasis must be placed on our language. The giant must not be confused between languages . This is synonymous to sleep talking. Imagine explaining some cultural concepts in English that lactose the actual concepts to describe such concepts. people learn and relate better in their mother tongue.
Moral Education : Just as it is a known fact that anyone overdosed on codeine will most likely sleep like the Biblical Jonah,who was sleeping even in the face of perishing , emphasis on morality has been on the low side .This can best be described by the words of a famous criminologist as quoted by Napoleon Hill in THINK AND GROW RICH that "When men first come into contact with crime, they abhor it. If they remain in contact for a time,they become accustomed to it and endure it. If they remain in contact with it long enough, they finally embrace it a day become influenced by it. A large percentage of Nigerian are either enduring it or embracing it.The giants in most Nigerians have therefore hibernated and subsequently relapsed into comatose.
There is therefore the need for a moral education that will create the consciousness in people . This will lead them to the right path. One doesn't necessarily need to be religious in order to be moral. It should be a state of mind to always do good and right thing at all time.
Ethics should be taught in elementary schools such as it was taught in ancient Rome. We need to restructure our value system. Virtues should be encouraged while vices should be discouraged . The larger society should also teach about the evils of celebrating vices and it's effects on the society as well the upcoming generation.
Political education : There is the need to realize that there are some landmines that have been laid that will blow up everybody in the fullness of time. While the hausa believe that they have to be reckoned with because they are major determinant of election result due to their numerical strenght, the average Yoruba believes every position is due to him because he has the qualifying or most of the time over qualifying certificate whereas the igbo believes he is being marginalized due to the tribe's role in the civil war. There is therefore a nead for political education to reduce the silent enmity among the tribes. Nigeria deserves a sound political education .

History education : By starting from the knowledge of what we have been,we can hope to effectively fertilize the present and make better plans for the future . This also covers the teaching of history in elementary and secondary schools in order to to arouse the need citizen consciousness.
Legal Education :All citizens should be aware of some basic laws. These laws can better be explained in churches , mosques and through the mass media,etc. This is necessary because a lot of graduates are ignorant even the littlest of laws. Unfortunately, there is no ignorance in law. However , a lot of the citizens are indeed ignorant of the law and even their rights enshrined in the law not to talk of knowing the rights of others. It becomes imperative for all to know their fundamental rights and other necessary information.
Death education :The teaching of death needs to be emphasized due to the reckless corrupt cases. The death consciousness will create in people the need to be humble and see power and riches as transient . Notable kings have died so as tyrants and great people who once ruled at a time or the other. Being aware of death equals realising that all is vanity When people meditate on their death,and how they will spend their afterlife (either it exists or otherwise ) they tend to treat all men with humanity by according mutual respect and respect for the rights and interests of others.
From the foregoing , It becomes obvious that the fundamental solution is first and foremost the development of the right attitude of the mind.There is the need to change people's mindset and to cultivate new habits.The development of the mind requires ideating and dispelling negative thoughts.The development of the mind can be likened to the toning of the muscles . It requires practice and consistency. Individuals have to be persistent in critical thinking , desist from prejudicial assertions and make good value judgements.
Education is only but a way to awaken the sleeping giant. It should be noted that I only mentioned a few of the types/parts of education to be improved on or introduced into the whole education system. There are a thousand and one ways but it often revolves around the type of education and what we hold as value both as individuals and as a people. Education should teach one how to earn a living and also make one know what to do at every situation.
In all,this piece doesn't lay claim to being a complete monograph nor is it a treatise on the total solution to the nation's problems. However ,it is only a part of the myriads of solutions lying fallow.
