Politics / "Ojukwu's Lies Sparked Civil War In Nigeria" - Yakubu Gowon by iamlegitimate: 12:11pm On Oct 25, 2017
Former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) has disclosed how lies by late warlord, Odumegu Ojukwu after the Aburi accord led to Biafra civil war, between 1967 and 1970.

Gowon made the claim while giving insight into what happened at the Aburi Conference, in Ghana, convened to resolve Nigeria’s political logjam.

He said the Federal Government went to Aburi unprepared, following a disagreement which broke out between the Supreme Military Council (SMC) and the Eastern region, led by Ojukwu.

Speaking on AIT’s programme “People, Politics and Power,” on Tuesday, Gowon said the decision to go to Aburi was borne out of the desire to win back the trust and confidence of Nigerians.

He maintained that secession was never part of the resolutions they agreed on.

Gowon said, “We agreed to put our heads together, to regain the trust and confidence of Nigerians. We went to Aburi, to agree to deal with the situation of our country, by ourselves.

“We did not go with any prepared position on the federal side, but, Ojukwu came with a paper he prepared. His prepared position was on a pink paper. Usually, pink paper at the Staff College is directing staff solution to the problem.”

Gowon said most of the positions presented by Ojukwu at the conference were accepted and upon their return to Nigeria, he was determined to keep the country united by assuaging the South East but Ojukwu felt otherwise.

He said Ojukwu’s refusal may have been as a result of killings of Igbos in the North, a situation that made him (Ojukwu) insist on Nigeria’s breakup.

Gowon disclosed that part of the agreement reached in Aburi was that upon return to Nigeria, he would be the first to make any statement concerning the resolutions before any governor makes any statement.

He said, “But, by the time I returned, I was ill; I had fever. I could not make any statement. But, Ojukwu went to the radio, to make a statement and said the things we never agreed on.

“David Ejoor was the one who called me one early morning to ask if I had heard what Ojukwu said, and I said no. He then reeled out all that Ojukwu had said and I asked David, in all honesty, if that was what we agreed. He said no.

“To keep the country together was not a task that I could do alone. I needed the cooperation and understanding of every Nigerian. And, in order to ensure we kept the country together, I reckoned that we needed to have discussions among ourselves. We had a civil servant who was exceptionally experienced and good.

“We went there (Aburi) to restore the trust of our country. If we were working together, anyone with conscience will assuage the feelings (of the South-easterners). But, Ojukwu thought otherwise. He had in mind all along, based on what happened to his people in the North, that secession was the only way out. But, we were thinking of the whole country, because all parts of the country were involved. The military was not involved in the killings of South-easterners in the North.”

Politics / Prisoners Will Vote In 2019, According To The Head Of INEC, Professor Mahmood Ya by iamlegitimate: 10:55am On Oct 25, 2017
Arrangements are being made so that come 2019, prisoners will be allowed to vote in the general elections, the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said.

Prof. Yakubu made the revelation on Tuesday at a dialogue session with the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room Dialogue – a coalition of over 70 civil society organizations in Nigeria.

He disclosed that The Independent National Electoral Commission is already making arrangements with the Nigeria Prisons Service to make this possible. The electoral body said it is looking at the possibility of creating polling units in Nigerian prisons.

Yakubu said: "We have already engaged the Comptroller General of Prisons and we have statistics on the number of prisoners nationwide and the number of inmates that are registered. We are looking at the possibility of creating polling units in the prisons and to enable some categories of prisoners vote.

Ghana does it but there are some categories of prisoners who by the nature of crimes committed, lose the right to vote.

Sports / Diego Maradona: Giving FIFA Award To Ronaldo And Not Messi 'hurt My Soul' by iamlegitimate: 12:45pm On Oct 24, 2017
Www.h24soccer..com

Argentina great Diego Maradona admitted it "hurt his soul" to hand the Best FIFA Men's Player award to Cristiano Ronaldo and not to compatriot Lionel Messi.

Real Madrid star Ronaldo won the accolade for the second year running on Monday, beating off competition from Barcelona's Messi and Paris Saint-Germain's Neymar.

Maradona and former Brazil international Ronaldo presented the award to Ronaldo at the Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony in London.

"To give the Best [award] to Ronaldo and not be able to give it to Messi hurt my soul," Maradona told TyC Sports.
Maradona, who coached Messi while in charge of Argentina between 2008 and 2010, went on to deny reports that his relationship with the Barca star is a bad one.

Messi has been criticised in the past by some, including by Maradona, for lacking "personality to be a leader" when wearing the Argentina shirt.

Argentina and Messi have lost three straight finals at major competitions in a three-year span -- the 2014 World Cup against Germany, the 2015 Copa America against Chile and the 2016 Copa America Centenario also against Chile.

Maradona, who captained Argentina to the 1986 World Cup, was disappointed Messi did not invite him to his wedding this summer in their homeland, fuelling speculation that the two do not get along.

Sports / Re: Ryan Giggs Confirms Concern In Available Leicester And Everton Jobs by iamlegitimate: 7:31pm On Oct 23, 2017
Ryan Giggs says he is "interested" in taking over the vacant manager's job at Leicester City or Everton, the former Manchester United star told Sky Sports on Monday.

Giggs, 43, has long looked to move into management after ending his playing days in 2014, but his only head coaching position to date was in an interim role that season after United sacked David Moyes.

Last season he was linked to taking over at both Swansea City and Southampton, but he said in May that he was happy to wait for the right opportunity.
And after Leicester sacked Craig Shakespeare last week and Everton parted ways with Ronald Koeman on Monday, Giggs said both jobs appeal to him.

"I think you look at those two teams, Leicester being champions two seasons ago, Everton being a fantastic club with a fantastic history, for me these are clubs I would be interested in," Giggs told Sky.

"However, there are a lot of coaches out there who would be interested in those positions.

"I've said all along that I'd be open to clubs which share the ambitions of myself. I want to improve clubs and improve players, to enjoy working for them and for players to enjoy the challenge.

"There are clubs in the Premier League which would be good jobs but also in the Championship and League One. It's more about the philosophy for me than the stature of the club."

After recording two wins and a draw in his four games in charge of United, Giggs then served as Louis van Gaal's assistant at Old Trafford for two seasons.
