Stanley Jegede

Founder/CEO of Phase3 Telecom

Phase3 Telecom is Africa’s leading independent aerial fibre optic network infrastructure and telecommunications services provider. Incorporated in 2003, Phase3 was licensed as a national long distance operator to provide transmission services in 2006.

Stanley Jegede is one of the leading figures that have transformed telecommunications in Africa in the last decade. Jegede has had a successful academic career, but notably obtained a B.Sc (honours) in Business information systems from University of North London, in 1995 and M.Sc in Business information Technology from Middlesex University, London, in 1996. Among others, he worked as a Business Analyst in the United Kingdom between 1997 and 1999 and later joined Verizon Communications (Formerly Bell Atlantic) USA, in 1999 to 2002 as a Senior Business Analyst. At Verizon, he oversaw the implementation of a new billing system – Express Track across fourteen (14) States of the United States. In 2003, Jegede helped found Phase3 Telecom, a firm licensed to offer National Long Distance transmission services using fibre optic within the territory of Nigeria. He has therefore created a novel means of transmission services that is safe, secured and cost effective. Jegede has consistently pushed the expansion of the Phase 3 network at a very high speed, with the vision of building the most reliable, dependable and longest fibre backbone across the West African region leveraging on the West African power pool. Today, Phase3 Telecom is the main driver of Nigeria’s Wire Nigeria (WiN) project, a scheme designed to deliver broadband services across all states of Nigeria. Jegede’s success with Phase3 Telecom, has seen him appointed as a member of the Broadband Committee inaugurated by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and charged to produce a Broadband roadmap plan to drive broadband penetration across Nigeria. As CEO, Jegede has always shown commitment to quality of service and this in turn has yielded numerous awards including the International Arch of Europe award for Quality as well as best Infrastructure Service Provider award 2012 in the Africa-America International business awards, amongst other notable recognitions conferred on Phase3 Telecom. Jegede is a successful family man married with children.

Seun and his family must eat too.

Immorality and self-abandonement is what sells now.
Even grandma want to twerk to beyonce now...and wear type of outfit her 20yrd grandbaby wears. Grandma has taken bank loan to redo face and tidy up her t1tt1es and butt....she got her money maker pruned up. C'mon!

Things will not always go the way we want it or flow in grain to our wish and desire. Let us come into acceptance that Nairaland is a scaled image of the socio-political space called Nigeria.

We do not run away from the sociopaths we encounter everyday, whether at bus stop, inside bus, the crazy taxi driver that risks your life on third mainland, the office clerk that collects lunch money first before she can give you the visitor ledger to sign. We deal with them out there. It should not be different with the ones in here.

Leave Seun to feed his family. I actually have business proposals to make him more popular by replicating via Nairaland the kind of spicy and scandalous entertainment popularised by Jerry Springer...but he refused to contact me.

Lol man must chop.

@Aarekankafo

You must be really new to NL. I'm really not surprised grin

Brian Computer To Unveil Own Tablet Phones

Brian Integrated Systems Limited, one of Nigeria's certified indigenous system builders has announced it readiness to unveil its tablet phones.

Mr. Tunji Balogun, managing director and chief executive officer of the Company told Nigeria CommunicationsWeek that Brian has been monitoring the market and has discovered that very soon laptops and desktops will be replaced by touch button and touch screen phones.

“So, we do not wish to be left behind. Our tab is a bit different and higher than what is obtainable in the market today. Some of them come in wireless form with USB provision. Most tabs in the market now do not have USB spaces and that limits the user who cannot pair an additional or his personal software with the tab”, he said.

Noddin in aggrement, Olaide Balogun, managing director, Balog Technologies, the driver of the project described the tablet as will give foreign brands a run for their money; hence the features are user-friendly and related to Nigerian environment.

She said: “Our Company is a forward looking one and with the current trend; people are now looking forward to touch-centric communication (phones) gadgets. That actually spurred us to move into invention of tablet. It’s a 4.1” tablet with clear camera dimension. On a special note, it has USB some popular brands do not have. That has been a limitation to the end-user, but we are cutting off that barrier.

“The tablet is light weight, portable and various colours. It also has WiFi-3G, so no limitation; the user will always be on the go,” she said giving a brief description of the tab.

Olaide added, although, most Nigerians have aligned themselves with foreign products Brian Computers is optimist that this will sell. “We are leveraging on our name and brand. Secondly, we trust what we are putting out. A lot of works have been put into it and now we are ready to unveil it. Nigerians are going to love it,” she maintained.

This is coming in less than ten years the Company unveiled its laptop called "Brian Platinum".

The system, apart from running on the Dual Core processor, has a minimum 60 gigabyte Hard Disk space, minimum of 512 RAM, Integrated 1, DVD I CD WR among other feature.

Oyedeji: Media Planning and Buying is Strategy Driven

CEO/Founder of Good Morning Nigeria (GMN)

Dr Tayo Oyedeji

In this interview with Raheem Akingbolu, the new helmsman at Media Perspectives, Dr Tayo Oyedeji, talks about his plans to take the company to the top with strong strategy and personnel development.

What is media buying and how is it in Nigeria?

I don’t think we are in the media buying business because connotes trading, just as in buying and selling. Anybody on the street can walk into a media outlet to buy advertising if it is a trading enterprise. Instead, I see our core offering as media strategy advisory services. We help our clients identify media outlets that their target consumers are patronizing and negotiate placement rates to optimise their budgets.

This is a research and strategy driven business. It's not an art is a science with precise metrics and deliverables. The problem with our industry in Nigeria is that many of our colleagues are not comfortable with numbers so they would rather devolve our practice into a creative process driven by heuristics and rules of thumbs. But media in advanced markets has always been a science. So I am glad that Media Perspectives is right at the cutting edge of the data driven side of our business.

What strategy makes you outstanding in the industry?

The first thing is our approach to media planning. We like to think that we have some of the most sophisticated data analytics specialists in the entire industry. All the media independent agencies have access to the same industry data but we interpret and analyse it differently. The difference between us and others is the quality and depth of our data analysis. I come from an analytical background and have ensured that our people are being trained to become the industry specialists in delivering value to clients via effective audience analysis. For instance, we have started the Media Perspectives School of Media (MPSOM), which is a full academic institute for developing media planners, data specialists, and media buyers. We have also invested heavily in an e-learning platform that will run concurrently with the school. My goal is to ensure that our people are the best media specialists in the entire country and I think we will get there very soon.

What are you bringing to your new position at Media Perspectives?

I have about 16 years experience across media planning, finance, and management consulting both in Nigeria and in other markets across the world. In addition, I am one of the few persons in our industry who has studied media management up to PhD level in the best schools of mass communication in the world – University of Missouri-Columbia's School of Journalism and I also have an MBA from Oxford University in the UK. So I am bringing a lot of technical knowledge and general management skills to the table. My goal is to translate my global experience and expertise to this culture so that both global and local clients can receive truly world-class media advisory services from Media Perspectives.

How would you access the competition in Nigeria today?

To a large extent very few thing have changed in our industry over the past ten years. The same group of people are leading the same set of agencies with the same tools and processes. The question is ‘how do we move this industry forward? How we do improve the quality of service to clients?

For instance, many of our colleagues still use the same operational software they have always used. At Media Perspectives, we have invested heavily into a new software that will automate all our processes so that everything from planning to buying and compliance management is on one automated system.

Another area of concern for the industry is transparency and accountability. The entire industry works with a truly archaic media monitoring model that gives clients feedback on media executions almost a month after the campaign. We are currently developing a new software-driven process that would shrink that timeline to one day. Why can't a client know how much he is spending across all media types on a day-to-day basis? How do we expect clients to make strategic decisions about their campaigns when we give them monthly rather than daily reports? Those are some of the issues that bother clients about our practice. We need to be a more transparent and accountable industry. Media Perspectives will lead that effort and we hope others will follow.

Talking about media and data analytics, do you have a research company to do that for you or you will be handling it internally?

We are not a research company so we outsource the data gathering part of the value chain to competent research firms. But we are the ones that analyze the data. It is important for an agency to be comfortable with research and data because clients are looking for agencies with superior knowledge about the consumer, their media habits, and even purchase patterns. So I have doubled our budget for research for 2014 versus what we spent last year.

How is digital media affecting advertising and media buying in Nigeria?

Digital media is the future of our business and it is already a major force in the consumers' media mix. I was the head of digital media at MediaReach OMD before I took this job so I have worked in both traditional and digital media. We are still barely scratching the surface of digital media in Nigeria. Digital Media is still about 4 to 5% of total media spend in this country. In many markets, it has crossed the 20% threshold and it is already about 30% in the US. We need to develop digital media competencies across the industry so that clients can trust our advise on the medium.

At Media Perspectives, we are committed to developing the best digital media practice in our industry. We currently have a UK-trained digital specialist in our agency who is helping develop the competence of our people in Digital Media. We are probably the only agency with four Google-certified media planners in our digital department. We have also developed a full digital media module for the MP School of Media so that digital media become a core part of our service offering to clients.

The challenge is that most of the people who see these adverts don’t click, and it is the number of people that click that matters.

I disagree. Nigeria has the highest Click Through Rate of click in any market I have worked in. I believe we have one of the highest Click Through Rates in the world. We only need to develop great ideas for clients to develop digital assets and direct users to those assets.

Now that there will be lots of activities this year, the World Cp is coming, politics is also on the rise, what is your projection for adspend?

I foresee about 25 percent increase in media spend in 2014. The primary spend driver will be the World Cup, and the fact that Nigeria is participating will drive a lot of brand engagement.
