As the final day of December rapidly approaches, chances are that you’re hard at work putting the finishing touches on your New Year’s resolutions. Of course, it’s pretty common to make resolutions that you may never keep – and so the cycle continues year after year. The key to keeping a resolution is having the motivation to carry that pledge throughout the next 365 days. And what better source to find that motivation than music. I've rounded up ten common New Year’s resolutions and a powerful song for each. With the help of your favorite artists like Fifth Harmony , Halsey, John Legend , and Alessia Cara, you’ll be keeping that resolution all the way until December 2017. 1. The Resolution: Love yourself more in 2017. The Song: “Scars to Your Beautiful” (Alessia Cara) Why it will help: Alessia Cara has THE anthem for self-love and treating yourself better. If that’s your goal for the new year, she is one star that understands how tough it can be – but how great it feels when you get there. 2. The Resolution: Hustle like you’ve never hustled before. The Song: “Work” (Rihanna) Why it will help: Does this need any explanation, honestly? This jam might be about a relationship on its last legs, but it applies to anything you need to give your all. 3. The Resolution: Spend more time with your friends. The Song: “That’s My Girl” (Fifth Harmony) Why it will help: “That’s My Girl” is the ladyboss anthem we all needed this year. If you need a reminder to boost up the spirits of the people around you, this is your jam. 4. The Resolution: Be more organized. The Song: “Eyes Wide” (Handsomest Ghost) Why it will help: Something about this song just feels like getting minimal and paring down to the basics. It has a calming melody and inspiring words that will inspire you to start over and feel relaxed. 5. The Resolution: Try to get back in touch with the one who got away. The Song: “Closer” (The Chainsmokers x Halsey) Why it will help: I mean, it’s physically impossible to listen to this song without wanting to get in touch with an ex, so if that’s what you want, “Closer” will get you there. 6. The Resolution: Don’t ever text your ex ever again. The Song: “Shout Out to My Ex” (Little Mix) Why it will help: Little Mix’s “Shout Out to My Ex” is the antithesis to The Chainsmokers and Halsey’s “Closer.” If you need an anthem to help you forget the one who broke your heart, the Little Mix girls are here for you. 7. The Resolution: Give in to love. The Song: “Love Me Now” (John Legend) Why it will help: It's scary to open up to another person — what if your heart gets broken? — but it's almost always worth it. Have you seen the music video ? Prepare to feel all the feels, and want to fall in love forever. The song has a surging melody that will remind you that love is worth it. 8. The Resolution: Travel more. The Song: “I’m Born To Run” (American Authors) Why it will help: If the first couple of verses don’t get you, the hook that begins with “I wanna see Paris, I wanna see Tokyo” will punch you right in the wanderlusting feels. Plus, this song has a beat that will inspire you to get up and put a plan into action. 9. The Resolution: Be more confident. The Song: “Starboy” (The Weeknd) Why it will help: You don’t have to only come alive in the fall time while listening to this song. The Weeknd just radiates confidence, and “Starboy” is the anthem of all people who know they’re awesome. 10. The Resolution: Live life to the fullest. The Song: “Just Hold On” (Steve Aoki x Louis Tomlinson) Why it will help: This is the perfect song for ringing in the New Year. Louis will inspire you to cherish life while it’s yours, and live every day to its maximum potential. |
Each January, about 40% of the country make New Year's resolutions, and setting a goal at the start of the year is as much a part of the festivities. But when you think about it, New Year's resolutions don't make a lot of sense. You can decide to get heathy anytime during the year, so why has January 1st become a de facto goal-setting holiday? Why not a birthday, the start of your new year? Or the first week of a new school year? The tradition of making New Year's resolutions goes back over 4,000 years, to the ancient Babylonian festival of Akitu . During this 12-day celebration, the Babylonians would celebrate the "rebirth of the natural world." They would plant crops, crown a new king (or reaffirm the power of the reigning king), make promises to their gods, and pay back their debts. Here's where the New Year's resolutions come in: the Babylonians believed if they kept their promises to the gods, they would stay on the gods' good side, and if not, they would fall out of favor. In 153 B.C., the Roman Senate declared that January 1st would signal the start of the new year, honoring the god Janus, according to the Washington Post. Because Janus was said to have two faces, he could look forwards and backwards at the same time, symbolizing the end of the previous year and the start of the new year ahead. However, it took over 100 years for this to take effect — Julius Caesar made it official around 46 B.C.E. Romans, similar to the Babylonians, would make promises to Janus about their behavior for the next year. During the Middle Ages, knights would renew their vows to chivalry by placing their hand on a live or roasted peacock, Slate reports. The "Peacock Vow" was an annual contract taken at the end of each year, AKA a resolution to uphold the values of knighthood. Things have come a long way since then. Modern new year's resolutions became *a thing* in the 19th century. The first recorded use of the phrase "new year resolution" appeared in a Boston newspaper in 1813. Still, while over a third of the population make New Year's resolutions every year, only 8% follow through on them. The best way to make sure you achieve your resolution is to treat it like a regular goal: make it specific and tangible, so you can track your progress. The only way to measure your success is by developing an action plan and following it. Twitter @jude_jae.

some brag about achievements and wealth they don’t have, others tells stories that touch (apologies to Falz Tha Bahd Guy) our hearts in order to get us to pity them. Unfortunately, many artistes tell half-truths or outright lies with their lyrics. Here are 5 examples of when Nigerian music acts misled fans with their lyrics… Davido-Fans Mi ‘I remember when I had no money in my bank account…’ Well, we think the only time David Adeleke had no money in his bank account was when he had no bank account. Why is he trying to embarrass his billionaire dad? D’Prince– Who am I (Omoba) ‘Who am I? Omoba!’ We have searched from Umuahia to Arochukwu, Isialangwa to Isiquato all in Abia state but we couldnt get any traditional king related to Don Jazzy’s family. We even checked if there was any ruling family with the name, Enebeli but we drew blanks. Skales–Emergency by Wizzypro ‘The only competition I have is Dangote’ Is this a joke or what? Sigh! Uncle Skales, please try and compete with Diamond Platnumz aka Chibu Dangote first and leave Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the richest Nigerian alone. Please. Adekunle Gold-Sade ‘Ose tolo mo pe 30 o Sade(I clocked 30years last week)’. Chaiii, iro funfun balau (blatant lie). Adekunle Kosoko, better known as Adekunle Gold, is not even up to 25! Wizkid-Ojuelegba ‘Ni Ojuelegba, dem know my story…’ Now we all believed this tale until Tee A busted Wizzy. One wonders, why Wizkid had to lie when he possesses enough talent to make the truth as iconic as the signature phrase. We still love these artistes even if they lie to us because the lyrics they use tell us more about ourselves. Please tell us the lies you have detected in the songs by your favourite artistes. Olamide who
just released his fifth studio album,
‘Eyan Mayweather’ revealed that
he will not be signing any female
artists. His reason for this decision is simply due to their ‘short industry life span’. Olamide’s YBNL label at the moment is a total boys’ club with Adekunle Gold, Lil Kesh, Viktoh, Chinko Ekun and other lesser known artsists. Olamide, however, made it clear that it does not mean he can never have a female on his label. He revealed if he was going to sign a female artist, she’d have to engulf herself with the hunger he has, that is the ‘‘hunger for success. So whats ur take on this. |
5. Yemi sax. We didn't’t say that the cover had to
be singing. Yemi Sax always brings
a jazzy aspect to every song, and
his sax rendition of Hello is classic.
You can really envision this being
played at any event, wedding,
elevator, bedroom in the world.
Great stuff. 4. Joe. I discovered this cover when someone played it for me, and honestly besides the creativity from singing the lyrics in pidgin, he’s got a pretty damn good voice. Along with being an artist, he’s also an actor and producer. Looking for another dimension to Adele’s Hello? This one got you. 3. Praiz. Praiz has one of the best voices in Nigeria, and I’m sure when he decided to drop his cover, he got a lot of fans excited. Myself included. Praiz really killed it for real, and switched it up a bit to add some maggi. The last time Praiz jumped on big cover was Rihanna’s Stay, 2. Ruby When I heard everyone was doing covers to Hello, the one person I patiently waited for was Ruby. The wait was very worth it. Ruby owned the song to the point you might have thought the song was written for her. That high note and clear voice is just pure gold. Kudos. 1. Omawumì Is Omawumi’s cover better than the original song by Adele? Sean Tizzle thinks so, and really he has a strong point. Omawumi was the first big name in Nigeria to drop a cover to Hello, and everyone else is chasing her because in my opinion this is the best cover yet. The perfect singing we already know about, but the slow reggae influence turned this from gold to platinum. Outstanding stuff. That’s all from me. Are there other nice covers to Hello? Possibly. But these are my top 5, and if you feel comments please drop em, |
Michael Collins aka Don Jazzy is
probably the best producer Nigeria
has seen over the past 2 decades.
Since he broke on to the scene
back in 2004 he has not looked
back at all producing hits after hits,
setting up one of the biggest labels
in Africa, and then reinventing
himself after his fall out with Dbanj. But it isn’t just because Don Jazzy makes great beats, but it’s the longevity that he has shown being at the top (or close to it) for the past 10-11 years.
