Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour says the attempt to intimidate Mojisola Meranda to resign as speaker of the Lagos state house of assembly is unacceptable.
Earlier on Monday, security operatives sealed off the speaker’s office as speculation about Meranda’s possible resignation grew.
Police and task force officers were stationed in vehicles around the house of the assembly complex, with some patrolling the premises to maintain order.
The assembly had requested the Department of State Services (DSS) to strengthen security around its premises ahead of February 18, following reports that Mudashiru Obasa planned to resume as speaker of the house.
In the letter to the DSS, Abubakar Ottun, the acting clerk of the house, warned that Obasa’s attempt to resume office could pose a security threat to the assembly and its members.
The lawmakers later passed a vote of confidence in the speaker, following rumors of her possible resignation.
Reacting to the development during an interview on Channels Television, Rhodes-Vivour condemned what he called the desecration of the state assembly and labelled it a “show of shame”.
The former LP governorship candidate asked President Bola Tinubu and the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) in Lagos to caution Obasa.
“The APC has sort of normalised this idea of using intimidation and force to get their way, and that is what we say today,” he said.
“An attempt to intimidate the speaker to resign and step aside using armed men and the threat of violence, and that is unacceptable.
“His (Obasa) leaders in the GAC, the president, should call him to order. Lagos state has advanced way past. We don’t want to go to new lows.
“There are civilised ways to handle these things. His party should call him to order.
“Armed men coming into the assembly is a big low and a disgrace to our politics in Lagos. It’s completely disgraceful.
“It’s unfortunate that all the allegations that were brought before the former speaker, all sorts of corruption allegations, we have not seen anything come out of it.”
Meranda became the first female speaker of the Lagos assembly on January 13, after Obasa was removed while he was out of the country.
On his return, Obasa challenged the process, arguing that due procedure was not followed and insisting that he remained the legitimate speaker of the house.
Social media critic Martins Otse aka Verydarkman has resumed calling out gospel singer Mercy Chinwo as he shared an update on her court case with her former manager and label boss Ezekiel Onyedikachi better known as Eezee Tee.
VDM, who made headlines after voicing his disappointment in Mercy Chinwo over a video she shared, in a new video he shared on Monday, February 17 alleged that the gospel singer and her legal representatives were mounting pressure on the judge to arraign Eezee Tee.
He revealed her court case with Eezee Tee was ongoing at the Federal High Court in the Ikoyi area of Lagos state.
The social media critic said he suspected they were pushing for Eezee Tee's arraignment to clear Mercy's name as people were beginning to doubt her story.
"Mercy Chinwo's lawyers are putting pressure on the judge to arraign Eezee, one of the reason why according to our suspicion is to clear are name. So that when they arraigh him people will say he is the one lying to clear their name as they have seen that people are beginning to doubt her story," VDM said.
However, in a clip from the same video, VDM while receiving an update from his informant claimed the court said there must be an arraignment before the application can be heard.
"The court said there must be arraignment before application can be heard, they will have to arraign Eezee Concept, this is sad, I wish I was in Lagos," he said.
VDM who vowed to investigate the case also bragged about his integrity.
"There is nobody in this country that will believe Mercy Chinwo over me, my integrity is intact nobdoy shake am," he said. In a caption of the video, the critic said,
"MERCY CHINWO AND EZEE CONCEPT CASE CURRENTLY GOING ON IN COURT,sadly while I was make this video to post a Sad news came in,GOD WILL ALWAYS VINDICATE THE INNOCENT,no matter the power and influence they have God will vindicate the innocent,I will dig further on this case…..God knows and please mercy chinwo drop part 2."
The lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume, has asked the Federal Government to probe a claim by US Congressman Scott Perry that aborted United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded terrorist organisations, including Boko Haram.
“You can’t say it’s just an allegation; it’s more than that,” the former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army said on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme.
“That’s why the Nigerian government and the National Assembly, especially, need to look into it to investigate and verify the veracity of such a very weighty allegation.”
The lawmaker, who has been in the National Assembly for more than 20 unbroken years, said the Nigerian government should be interested in the US congressman’s revelation, considering that there had been suspicions that foreign humanitarian agencies operating in Nigeria’s insurgent-ridded North-East zone sponsored terrorist activities.
Ndume said, “This development is very worrisome, especially because one of the terrorist organisations mentioned by Scott Perry is Boko Haram, and Boko Haram has ravaged not only the North-East but even (other parts of) Nigeria.
“You can remember Boko Haram bombed the police headquarters and the UN office in Abuja, and the casualties were enormous. So, the Nigerian government must be interested.
“I’m worried, but the Nigerian security agencies have raised this indirectly several times. Even the Borno State government was wary of the operations of the NGOs.
“I remember during the period of (Lieutenant General Tukur) Buratai, the Nigerian Army got intelligence and even raided the office of USAID or United Nations in Maiduguri. There was also a time when the governor got intelligence and security agencies raided one NGO that was providing training to some of their staff on how to use guns.
“We have been wondering for all these years where these people are getting money.”
Ndume further said Nigeria should be giving out humanitarian assistance to other countries and not receiving them.
“This issue of relying on aid from other countries is not even good for us because Nigeria, by now, is supposed to be the one that is giving out aid and not receiving aid,” he said.
“This is like a wake-up for all of us in government. We have everything; the only problem is the leadership. We need to fix that so that we’ll tap into what we have and be content.”
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Labour Party (LP) says it would field former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as its candidate.
Obi was the LP’s presidential candidate in 2023 but lost to President Bola Tinubu, the then-candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He came third in the polls, trailing behind former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, said Tinubu would not have a smooth sail in the next general polls.
“Tinubu is not just going to have it very easy in 2027, we are coming back with that Peter Obi to them so that they will know we are very serious,” he said.
During the show, he faulted actor-turned-politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, over his decision to dump the party.
Arabambi described Okonkwo’s exit as a relief for the party as it plans to unseat the present administration come 2027.
He doubted Okonkwo’s loyalty to the LP, accusing him of working for President Tinubu and the ruling APC.
“And we wish Kenneth Okonkwo well, his resignation is good riddance to bad rubbish. He should not speak about the Labour Party anymore,” Arabambi stated.
To the LP spokesman, “There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party. Labour Party is not going into extinction. It is just a figment of the imaginations of most of our detractors.”
