TravelAirlines Raise Fare Amidst Rising Fuel Price by iwaeda(op): 8:20am On May 21
Domestic airlines in Nigeria have increased their minimum base fares to about N200,000 for one-way tickets following the continued rise in aviation fuel prices and mounting operational costs.

Checks across the booking portals of several airlines showed that the fare increase affects most operators, although a few carriers are yet to adjust their ticket prices as of press time.

Daily Trust reports that United Nigeria Airlines has fixed its minimum fare at N200,000 regardless of destination, while Air Peace raised its one-way fares to about N211,600. Ibom Air also adjusted its base fare upward to approximately N200,300.

However, some airlines retained relatively lower fares on selected routes. Arik Air maintained fares between N113,000 and N114,000 for Abuja-Lagos flights, while Aero Contractors’ fares ranged from N123,127 to N146,702. ValueJet’s fares stood between N118,571 and N132,857 for Lagos-Abuja trips.

The increase came as aviation fuel, also known as Jet A1, now sells for about N2,650 per litre at some airports across the country, putting additional pressure on airline operators.

This is despite the slash in ex-depot price by the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals earlier in the week.

Some of the operators who spoke with our correspondent justified the decision to raise fares, blaming it on rising operational expenses, shrinking cash flow and growing debts within the aviation sector.

An airline official, who spoke anonymously because he was not authorised to comment publicly, said the adjustment followed extensive consultations and careful assessment of the economic situation.

According to the source, the fare increase was an individual business decision by each airline and not a coordinated action among operators.

We have adjusted our minimum fares to N200,000 per flight irrespective of the route. This decision was taken after serious consideration of many factors,” the source said.

The official explained that airlines could no longer sustain operations under the current cost of aviation fuel, warning that failure to review fares could worsen the crisis in the industry.

We cannot continue to subsidise travellers with the current situation of Jet A1. Cash flow has dried up and debts are increasing,” the source added.

Operators also appealed to passengers for understanding, describing the increase as painful but necessary for the survival of domestic airlines.

Meanwhile, aviation analyst, Group Capt. John Ojikutu has stressed the need to fix the pipelines conveying Jet A1 to the Murtala Muhammad Airport in Ikeja Lagos in order to reduce the logistics cost of bringing the product.

“Without bridging the supply with pipelines from Ejigbo to the airport, you may not get it lower than that. Give the concession out to the airlines (AON) or any other private operator who should not get more than N50/litre for the bridging or N100m for 2m litre instead of the N350/ltr or N700m for 2m daily by transportation,” he said.

TravelFG Suspends Planned Closure Of Eko Bridge by iwaeda(op): 8:02am On May 20
THE Federal Government, yesterday, disclosed that it will not close the Eko Bridge in Lagos State, as it had earlier planned.

The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, made the disclosure during an inspection of the bridge.

Umahi said: “We directed that this bridge be closed. That was about two weeks back, but our caring President Bola Tinubu is very much concerned about the closure of this Eko Bridge.

“He has asked me to come back here and take a second look at that decision so that we don’t induce much hardship on Nigerians.”

The Minister said that his team re-assessed the strength of the bridge on Monday and confirmed that the closure could be suspended at the moment.

He said: “We have done our technical evaluation in line with the President’s directive. Putting safety over and above every decision, we have seen that, for now, we are safe, but we won’t get to a situation where any Nigerian on this bridge will not be safe. We have agreed on three procedures.”

According to Umahi, the first procedure is not to close the bridge now but to monitor the progression or otherwise of the crack.

He said that the crack was not progressing either arithmetically or geometrically at the moment.

He said: “We have agreed on remedial work that could be carried out within four months by Buildwell, and that is by doing additional piling and a pie cap and joining it to the cracked one to bypass the section that is cracked.

“That can lead us to open the entire bridge and when that is done, we will wait for the entire design whereby the entire slab within that section will be lifted and then we will demolish what was cracked.”

He said: “I can assure you that the President means well, and we owe him prayers and support, and God will take us there.”

CrimeTerror Rivalry In Borno Escalates As ISWAP Fighters Abduct Several Students by iwaeda(op): 9:34am On May 19
The incident was confirmed on Monday to SaharaReporters by the President of Borno South Youth Alliance (BOSYA), Samaila Ibrahim Kaigam.

Afaction of Boko Haram known as Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad (JAS) has confirmed that fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) abducted more than 50 students from Mussa Askira School in Uba Local Government Area of Borno State as retaliation for a deadly attack launched against ISWAP by JAS insurgents.

The incident was confirmed on Monday to SaharaReporters by the President of Borno South Youth Alliance (BOSYA), Samaila Ibrahim Kaigam.

According to Kaigam, the abduction occurred after JAS fighters invaded and defeated ISWAP members in a recent confrontation, forcing ISWAP to later return on what he described as a “revenge mission.”

Kaigam said the rival terror groups had engaged in intense clashes in recent days, with JAS allegedly overpowering ISWAP fighters before temporarily occupying their territory.

He explained that after JAS fighters withdrew from the area, ISWAP returned to retaliate but failed to locate the Boko Haram faction members they intended to confront.

Instead, the insurgents allegedly stormed the community and abducted schoolchildren.

“So regarding these folks, the children that were kidnapped in Mussa Askira previously. So this evening I had a discussion with them, Boko Haram, that is their leaders this evening,” Kaigam told SaharaReporters.

“We had a discussion, for starters, the discussion was about Goshe women and the children, so they asked us to send a list.”

“There are some people that have been fighting for a possibility to see if they can release a few, which they agreed initially. So we are now sending, they asked us to send a list. They had a final meeting on it and they approved that we send a list of people they will be releasing.”

“So we'll be sending the list of the people they will be releasing. I will see if they agree to me giving you people the list, I will forward it to you.”

Kaigam further disclosed that discussions with the insurgents also focused on the abducted students, adding that the JAS faction denied responsibility for the kidnapping and instead blamed ISWAP.

“So secondly, we had a discussion, I think, yesterday or the day before yesterday about the children kidnapped,” he said.

“I told them on how they can release the children, they said they will get back to me on that because they just came back from whatever and they have a long discussions and meetings to cover.”

“So this evening when we had the call, they confirmed to me that yes, they know of the children's kidnapping, but they were not the ones who kidnapped the children.”

“ISWAP kidnapped the children, not them.”

Kaigam explained that the abduction happened after Boko Haram fighters attacked ISWAP camps and reportedly succeeded in defeating their rivals.

“So now the process at which the kidnapping happened was, Boko Haram went to attack ISWAP. So when they went to attack them, I think a few days ago, they succeeded, they conquered them,” he said.

“So when they conquered them, they stayed at the place for like a day or two, which I can confirm because within those three days, I called them and I could not reach them.”

“So meaning they were somewhere whereby their phones were off or something. So now, they confirmed to me that within that period, they went on a battle with ISWAP.”

“So when they concluded, they won. When they won, they stayed there for a few days, then they saw the place was not the way they feel it's nice, so they left.”

According to him, ISWAP fighters later returned to the territory seeking revenge but failed to locate the JAS fighters who had earlier attacked them.

“So when they left, now, ISWAP came back for a revenge mission,” Kaigam said.

“So when they came for a revenge mission, they came into Boko Haram's territory, which is that part of southern Boko Haram.”

“So when they came in, they could not meet them to challenge them, to have any form of battle between them.”

“So in that process, they kidnapped those children, then they went back to the territory with the children.”

“So they came for a revenge mission that went wrong, rather than going back empty-handed, they something those children from their territory to make them feel, yes, we took something from your side.”

Kaigam maintained that the abduction was not pre-planned and claimed there was no prior intelligence operation targeting the students.

“So the kidnapping was not planned. There was nothing like an intel or anything. No,” he said

“It's just like, we are coming, then we decided, fine, this is their territory, what can we pick, then they picked those kids and they left with them.”

The BOSYA president also expressed fears that ISWAP may not demand ransom or publicly acknowledge the kidnapping, describing the terror group as unpredictable and dangerous.

“But another thing we should all know is ISWAP is not always the type that when they kidnap, they bring it out to say we've kidnapped and we want ransom,” he said.

“So far, there are people they have kidnapped, they have not come out to say they want ransom. They just kidnap, they just do it. Just like that. For nothing, for no reason.”

“So that is one of the fears.”

Kaigam disclosed that efforts were ongoing to establish contact with individuals linked to ISWAP in hopes of securing information about the abducted children and possibly obtaining proof that they are still alive.

SaharaReporters previously reported that scores of pupils of Mussa Askira Primary School in Uba Local Government Area of Borno State were abducted by suspected Boko Haram terrorists.

SaharaReporters gathered that the attack occurred at about 9am last week Friday when the insurgents stormed the school and whisked away several students without resistance.

Sources familiar with the incident told SaharaReporters that despite the presence of military personnel and operational vehicles in the community before the attack, the soldiers allegedly fled into nearby mountains immediately the terrorists approached the area.

According to the sources, the terrorists operated freely for several minutes and carted away the pupils without any confrontation from the Nigerian Army.

One of the sources said residents were shocked that no gunshot was fired throughout the operation despite the reported heavy military presence in the community.

CrimeOgbomoso Teachers Protest The Kidnapping Of Schoolchildren, Colleagues In Oyo by iwaeda(op): 1:28pm On May 18
Ogbomoso Teachers Take To Streets To Protest Abduction Of Schoolchildren, Colleagues By Gunmen In Oyo State

Teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State have taken to the streets in a wave of protest over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in parts of the state, escalating public pressure on authorities to respond decisively to worsening insecurity in schools.

The protesting teachers expressed anger, fear and frustration over repeated attacks on educational institutions, insisting that classrooms have become unsafe for both pupils and staff.

Many of them carried placards and chanted solidarity songs while demanding urgent government intervention and the immediate release of the abducted teachers and pupils.

In a video seen by SaharaReporters, the protesters could be heard calling for immediate action from security agencies and government authorities. One of the placards carried during the demonstration read, “Government take action,” capturing the mood of urgency and distress among the educators.

The protest comes in the wake of widespread outrage following a recent attack on schools in Oyo State, where armed men invaded educational facilities in the Oriire Local Government Area, abducting teachers and pupils.

The incident has continued to spark concern across the state and beyond, particularly among education stakeholders.

Oriire has remained at the centre of attention following the assault. The kidnappers later released disturbing videos from captivity showing two victims pleading for rescue.

In one of the videos, a visibly distressed nursing mother who identified herself as a staff member of First Baptist Church in Ogbomoso appealed to authorities and the church for urgent intervention.

She said, “We are here, we need help from the government and the state government, both the church, First Baptist Church in Yawota and the community. We need your help so that these people will release us,” she said tearfully.

Another victim, the Principal of Community High School, Esiele, Mrs. Racheal Alamu, also appeared in a separate video, calling on authorities and Nigerians to act swiftly before the situation deteriorates further. Her emotional appeal added to growing fears over the safety of abductees.

The attackers were said to have stormed LA Primary School and Community Grammar School in Ahoro-Esiele community on Friday, killing a teacher and abducting several pupils, students, and staff members in the process.

The brutality of the incident has intensified calls for stronger protection of schools, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities.

In response, the Oyo State Government announced that security agencies had sealed off possible escape routes around the National Park axis to prevent the abductors from fleeing into neighbouring states. Authorities say coordinated rescue operations are ongoing.

The Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, earlier disclosed that personnel of the Nigerian Army, police officers, the Amotekun Corps, and local hunters had been mobilised in a joint effort to rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.

CrimeClarification On Recent Reports Regarding The Neutralisation Of Terrorist Abu by iwaeda(op): 6:22pm On May 16
CLARIFICATION ON RECENT REPORTS REGARDING THE NEUTRALISATION OF TERRORIST COMMANDER ABU-BILAL AL-MINUKI

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) wishes to provide clarification following emerging public discourse regarding the recent neutralisation of a high-profile terrorist commander, Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, during a joint operation with the United States Africa Command on 16 May, 2026.

Certain media reports referencing a similar operation in 2024 have mentioned the elimination of a terrorist commander bearing the same name. This has understandably generated questions about the identity of the individual recently neutralised.

It is important to state that within the North East region and across the Lake Chad Basin, the use of similar or identical names, aliases and nom de guerres is common among ISWAP and Boko Haram terrorists.

This is essentially part of their indoctrination program which is aimed at deliberately obscuring identities. This fact has been established over the years in the course of counter terrorism operations in the Northeast of Nigeria.

The Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki eliminated on 16 May, 2026 has been positively identified through human intelligence and technical surveillance as a senior global operative within the Islamic State network, with direct links to international terrorist coordination, funding and operations across the Sahel. There is therefore no ambiguity in his identity.

The strike is a significant milestone in our counter-terrorism efforts.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria, in partnership with the United States, remain committed to dismantling terrorist networks and will continue to provide verified information through official channels. The general public and the media are please urged to rely only on these sources to avoid confusion from coincidental name similarities.
