North not born to rule –Shagari, Sokoto dep gov. From AHMED OYERINDE, Sokoto Monday, December 20, 2010 •President Goodluck Jonathan Photo: Sun News publishing More Stories on This Section Former Minister of Water Resources, Alhaji Muhtari Shagari has declared that what should be the concern of the North now was how to tackle the issue of poverty ravaging its people and not where the power should go. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Daily Sun in Sokoto, Sokoto State, Shagari, who is now the state deputy governor reasoned that if after all these years, the problems confronting the people of the North still persist, what is left is finding solutions to them and not having a northerner as president. He said he and some leaders in the North were solidly behind the candidature of President Goodluck Jonathan for 2011 Presidency because they believed he loves the northern people and he is prepared to solve their problems: “I have consistently said to my brothers in the North, that our problem today is not about power but rather about development and how we can eradicate poverty ravaging majority of our people.” Shagari opined that if those who are today shouting about zoning and rotation of power could pause a bit and articulate the problems of the North in the areas of education, basic infrastructure and the rest and approach Mr. President for assistance, they would have been taking more seriously. He said nobody could claim to love the northern people more than Jonathan as he has demonstrated that practically in so many areas of human endeavours. To buttress his claim, the deputy governor stated that Jonathan has started reviving all the northern textile industries that have collapsed and also promised to address the issue of Northern Oil Mills that have equally collapsed. In addition to this, Shagari said the President was currently working hard towards ensuring that all the irrigation facilities that were put together by Obasanjo administration are completed in due course. In the area of road construction, the former minister remarked that the poor condition of roads in the North has received the President’s attention, citing the Gusau–Funtua Road as well as the dual carriageway from Kano to Maiduguri as an example. To cap it all, just two days ago, the President announced the Federal Government’s plan to construct additional 100 Almajiri schools as a way of keeping the Almajiris off the northern streets. All these he added, were issues that are very important to the North and any true northern leader that saw them being addressed by Mr. President should support him to achieve his dream come 2011: “I think the earlier we started thinking about this country and not a section of it, the better for us. No one is born to rule. As a true Muslim, I believe power belongs to God, He can take it from whoever he wants and give it to who ever He wants and at the time He wants.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2010/dec/20/national-20-12-2010-003.htm |
