Finally please let those who are interested in being serviced by Monday (10/10/16)should please indicate their interest by stating their Monikers, location and minimum quantity for the supply. Tomorrow based o the response I get from the producers we should go to sleep on Friday night with a clear picture of Monday morning.

So a example from Latestarter could go thus;

Latestarter; Ojodu-berger up to Grammer School; 2 packs (50 pieces) for Monday morning.
Pickup point will be Omole Main-Gate.

This format will be adequate for now.

On the issue of the chin-chin I will address it tomorrow evening. We will talk about the potential of the business and how it will pan out in the immediate future. The different sizes and how it can be adapted to suit the demand peculiarities of your territory.

I have thought of a modest way that we can use to help the serious ones among us who would like to embark on this journey but cannot do so for capital related inhibitions.

I will provide the details of how it will work. there will be no need for me or indeed anyone to collect cash from any donor or sponsor. That way we keep our integrity intact while the beneficiaries will get the help they need. I will outline it tomorrow.

I had some really great news today that warmed me real good. This is the main purpose of investing this effort on the thread so far. it justifies the the all the energy and other resources expended towards the development of this thread.

I got some very pleasant report on one of my very dear online friends who is very humble, modest and probably as shy as my humble self. this lady in question was able to sell 14 packs of doughnuts by herself yesterday alone and I understand that she made 700 Naira only.

I was impressed and so was the gentleman who volunteered the information.

My dear friend I will not mention you directly but can you please tell us your experience so that others can benefit from it. I really am happy for you. I am sure many people will ask questions and your responses might help lot in helping them decide.

I understand that another person started by buying one pack on the first day and is now buying 8 packs and is selling this volume daily. I cannot identify this particular person but I am hoping the person will identify herself on the body of the thread. Meanwhile her real name I understand starts with the alphabet W.... .

We really could benefit from your experiences.

Lets hope you are willing to share your joys or otherwise.

I will now like to address the producers.

Based on the prevailing market prices of your basic raw materials, I would like to request that both of you provide us a new pricing regimen together with specific details of your delivery plan and payments.
I will send you both an email tonight and expect the response tomorrow morning.

I will like to add here nonetheless that in considering your prices and profitability kindly take cognizance of the strength of our numbers, volumes and spread and of course how fast this network of sub-distributors will grow if you can support this venture. Deadline for this will be 12 noon tomorrow.

Do note well that I will post your response directly on the thread for all to see and comment.
BusinessRe: Start Your F.M.C.G Distribution Business With N20,000 Initial Capital by Karin001(op): 11:49pm On Oct 05, 2016
Can we please work with the possibility of now commencing on Monday morning?
I suggest this date because that will give the producers enough time to organize themselves properly.

I understand from the news that the dollar gained more strength recently. This will naturally translate to an increase in the cost of raw materials.

Please note that this will require more aggressive marketing and sales on our own part. It is obvious that the producer will not produce unless he can cover his costs, the retailer will not sell unless his/her profit margin is reasonable. We in the same vein cannot also distribute without getting commensurate compensation for our efforts, neither will the consumer be willing to buy if he cannot perceive value for his well earned money.

So in the circumstances what can we really do?

A balancing act is required here. All actors in the distribution spectrum have to put in a little more.

Certain basics must be understood in this regard. We must still be guided by the fact that the more we sell the better our profitability. I am not advocating that we sell without making profit. That will certainly not do. I am however interested in making money no matter how little and then navigating the business terrain gracefully and with confidence drawn from experience.

I am of the opinion that we start now and no matter the challenges thrown up by the current of the economy we will still be learning the practicals while drawing something else that has inexplicable value; experience.

Please take this very seriously; if we wait till the economy begins to soar then we will be open to a lot of competition. We must as a matter of importance commit/resolve to do something despite the apparent reality. Honestly, it is quite discouraging to do anything right now but the only time we have is now.

Everyone who wants to prosper significantly and in such a way that even if the economy flounders again in the future adequate preparations would have been made and the necessary checks put in place thus ensuring that an effective bias filter surrounds us like an aura.

Hello Everybody, my sincere apologies.

The nature of my setback was instant and thus left no room whatsoever for notification.

One of my young ones had a bout of malaria leading to a feverish pitch that translated to very regular convulsions. I must say that I was alarmed. I type this in a pediatric hospital now and thank goodness it almost over.

We will be discharged by Friday Morning by HIS Grace. The Medics just want the little one to regain some energy then we are out and back home but while still her, I will concentrate as much as possible in filling the gap and redirecting our course.

latestarter:
Delivery doesn't seem a problem to me but pricing.
Vendors around my area buy doughnuts for N1000 per pack of 25 so if we come with something higher and not exceptional, it won't fly.

Negotiating pricing individually might not fly as well. If we need to collate orders for the producers to figure what they stand to gain, may be it could be helpful.

Nutrientrich mentioned she had agreed for N900 per pack but had to renege because of current cost of production but that seems a better bargain for us. A N100 margin wouldn't be a bad idea, something less isn't motivating. The producers need to understand the quantity we will push for them.

If doughnut wouldn't fly then let's look at chin chin. I really don't understand why we didn't start with chin chin because your strength seems to lie in it. That's what you're doing at the moment and you're pushing quite a huge amount.

I strongly suggest the producers sell for N900 per 25 pack so we can maintain the market rate of N1000 per 25 at least for the beginning. We can look into N1050 after we have been accepted in the market as a formidable ally
Thanks Oga latestarter.

Nothing could be closer to the truth. You encapsulated the entire objective of the thread in one sentence. Nothing beats collective bargaining.

I was hoping that with more people coming on board and in forging a united front we could actually look at the possibility of collective bargaining.

Yes it is true that the producers are experiencing a sharp increase in the cost of production occasioned by the ever increasing cost of the US Dollar vis-à-vis the Naira I am sure that in practical terms and increase in the production volume will naturally translate to an increase in turnover and where there is adequate emphasis on efficiency profits are meant to come.

More reactions please.

I didn’t quite decide on the doughnuts but I actually wanted a combination of both. The chin-chin is indeed my strength but I opted for the sales of doughnuts first because in my experience newbies would have to be guided gradually into the sales experience. Doughnuts is an everyday sales. Chin-chin is slower but less risky and more profitable. The choice of doughnuts is just to help newbies begin to see how easy it is to make little monies every single work day.

I will address this issue further when I resume later tonight. At the moment I have to attend to wifely/motherly duties.

Thank you latestarter for this excitement. See you soon.

PRICING

This is a very delicate area.

There are two angles here.

The prices we get it from the producers and the pricing we give it out to the retailers.

The difference is what we appropriate.

Both producing companies have offered to provide the doughnuts at 1000.00 per 25 pieces. This translates to 40.00 per piece. the recommended retail price is 50.00. So the difference is 10.00. Now if we had a stall or stand in a high traffic location like Oshodi, Ikeja bridge or Agege that would not be bad because just selling 500 pieces hundred pieces to passersby will give us a profit of 5000 Naira.

But that isn't the case here. We are positioning ourselves as intermediaries between the producers and the customers through the retailers. We bring significant value to both the retailer and the producer. for the producer we as a team, expand his scope, market and turnover which shoul also translate into a higher profitability while to the retailer we provide the products to them without they as much as moving from their locations.

We deserve to earn from being this important bridge. So I propose that we approach it from two ends. We strengthen our team and buying power and negotiate for steep discounts from the producers and also ensure that what we sell to the retailers with consideration for our profitability. I think that the price for this doughnut per pack should be sold at 1,050. while we get it form the producers at 950.

So far, fairy appears willing to sell at this price but I am yet to receive the best price offer from Nutrientrich. I await her response. to make it attractive we can ask for a further discount immediately we reach a particular mutually agreed benchmark.
BusinessRe: Start Your F.M.C.G Distribution Business With N20,000 Initial Capital by Karin001(op): 6:29pm On Oct 03, 2016
On the second day we will develop vertically and horizontally but this will of course be dependent on the feedback of the previous day. On this second day we will double we sold the previous day. Vertical growth will require that we provide more goods to our first customer while a horizontal expansion will simply mean adding more customers. I suggest that on this second day payment will be provided the producers on delivery.

So, the producers will naturally bear the cost of transportation at this stage.

By the third day we will repeat the horizontal and vertical growth effort. My thinking is that with aggressive salesmanship, we would have hit 10 pack minimum sales target. This will be the last day that the producers will oblige us free delivery. After this a number of things will change.
The deliveries will have to be more centralized and we will provide the company with cash backed pre-orders. my thoughts are that weekly orders would be placed based on perceived demand and then backed by cash deposits reflecting the ordered volume every Friday. The goods will then be provided daily from Monday through Friday next week. I think Nutrientrich and Fairy will consider this gesture and give us a further discount on the pricing to cushion our logistic costs and shore up our profits thus making our efforts worthwhile.
BusinessRe: Start Your F.M.C.G Distribution Business With N20,000 Initial Capital by Karin001(op): 6:08pm On Oct 03, 2016
After very careful thought this is my proposition for both producers and distributors;

The doughnut is best enjoyed when fresh. Interested participants should therefore limit their orders they are certain they can sell within a 12 hour day. They will also encourage their re-sellers to buy just enough to sell within that day. Where it is unavoidable that the product stays beyond a day, it must not exceed 2 days from the date of delivery. this implies that the producers will only deliver well made and hermetically sealed doughnuts to you in quantities that you can exhaust within 12 hours. They will not be bound to accept unsold doughnuts from you whether they be good or bad. On the strength of this I advise that we start small.

On our very first day we can start with as little as a 25 pieces pack or a maximum of 50 pieces which is two packs. The producers must at this point be willing to collect cash on delivery. There will be no prepayment at this point. The goods will then be delivered to the retailers as early as possible (and in small quantities too as they may not be wiling to pay cash this first time)and then we will check on them later in the day just to see how they fare.

Their performance on this first day will reveal a number of things one of them being the products acceptability in that market.

Normally one or two customers can provide these answers. What I may add here from my personal experience is that you must listen to the heart of the retailer and not his words. All manners of answers can come from his/her mouth and those answers in many cases may not necessarily reflect the actual performance of the product.

I recall when I first started out and a particular lady customer around FGC Abuloma, PH kept complaining about the small size of the chin-chin and yet any week I didn't go there to supply she would call me unceasingly and her order volumes just kept escalating .......and yet the story was that she wasn't selling then the story turned to she is just managing.

Summarily, you have to be very discerning when dealing with responses from retailers. Its a very selfish and self-serving world we live in.

My sincere apologies for the silence. It wasn't intentional.

Some personal issues became a major distraction. I am however dealing with all the issues concerning the thread and will bring them to the fore later this evening.

I intend to be online between 5.00pm and 7.00pm and then later by 11.00 pm till 12 midnight to attend to all issues that have arisen so far regarding product and market.

I have received an email from Madam Nutrientrich and spoken with the owners of Fairy.

Both of them have offered to give guarantees on territorial exclusivity.

Nutrientrich is seeking to know what quantities we are off-taking everyday and how consistent the purchases will be?

Fairy is wiling to review the prices downwards but the goods must be picked up at their factory or in Pen Cinema, Agege.

Nutrientrich is willing to drop only at Ikotun and Ojodu,

Fairy is willing to adopt a flexible delivery plan, he will provide details later.

I am still in talks with both parties. We will conclude tonight.
BusinessRe: Start Your F.M.C.G Distribution Business With N20,000 Initial Capital by Karin001(op): 1:34pm On Oct 02, 2016
Nnenaluv and Dosht we will attend to Lekki and Ajah very soon.

Let’s just get it right with those on the mainland first and then we can replicate for those in Ajah, Badagry, Ikorodu, Epe and even Abeokuta.

I am happy about the observations made in terms of the finishing and the general presentation of the goods/products. I am also happy that Nutrientrich is also here to justify whatever shortcomings may arise from here.

I must state here that rose75 and latestarter have captured the very essence of business in their individual responses. We live in a most imperfect world and even a more imperfect circumstances in Nigeria but we must never let that slow us down.

Let’s work with what we have and I tell you while we are improving or sales and entrepreneurial skills the producers will be acting on our input and developing further. Everybody thus wins; the customer, the retailer, the distributor, the manufacturer and the economy at large.

I sometimes buy a truck load of chin-chin and guess what, in the process of offloading and reloading I lose a few bags here and there. It used to pain me seriously but now I have overcome it. Sometimes the product tastes differently but then for us we women I guess your partners have told you before that the soup didn’t just click this time around. Whenever you find these obstacles, rather than let them wear you down, don't concentrate on the drawbacks and the cons for too long, what you need to do is to ensure that you re-position your focus to enable you close that cycle and put that phase behind you.

Never dwell on obstacles, see them as a hurdle that must be crossed and start the wholehearted attempt tom put it behind you. Brace up, analyse, decide, take action and move on immediately. Turn that point into a comma rather than a period signalling the end of the road.

I have been a quite busy this weekend but there are a few fundamental things we must discuss before the commencement of sales on Tuesday.
I will contact both today via producers today via email and whatever responses I get I will put them up here.

Among the issues to be thrashed are products, pricing, payments, logistics and exclusivity. Other issues will be taken as the need arises.

I am happy we had a reasonably successful outing today.

I have to retire early tonight but I will give this a lot of attention tomorrow. I am still committed to the commencement date of Tuesday 4th of October 2017. So raise all your questions, comments and suggestions and we will deal with it tomorrow.

Meanwhile, tomorrow we commemorate our independence. Our 'nation' would have clocked 57 in a few hours.

May we spend this time in sober reflection, thinking about how we can help the country by helping ourselves as individuals to change positively. If as many individuals as possible commit to change and attain it then we will be making very substantial contributions to our GDP.

Cheers and thank you all!

Karin,

We are willing to answer any questions except exclusivity & distributor pricing which are Karin's turf.
I am impressed by your report I must say.

It appears that only you and Lexaydfg were able to make it in the final analysis. Your analysis is pure Oga Latestarter, but what about the sizes? Weight nko? Are they similar?

Please advise accordingly.

Another very important variable we have to handle is the fact of logistics. I will undertake to handle this negotiation with them and report back to you promptly. I really don't think I am comfortable with everyone coming to Ojodu to pick it up. We either seek a more central location for all or we devise more friendly means to ensure that the doughnuts arrive the point of sales before 9.00am daily. I will also discuss the exclusivity proviso with the two companies.

Unfortunately the third company, lushylush backed out at the last minute confessing that her capacity is quite small and she produces more of chin-chin than doughnuts. We however wish to start with doughnuts and proceed to chin-chin and then other FMCG goods as we strengthen our pace and widen our strides.

Hi,
At this point, you have to adopt desperate measures.

Karin is not comfortable with getting involved with money in this project, it's obvious.

Try reaching out directly to Allstrasse, if he could make that wonderful promise out of his own volition, he could consider helping you if he's convinced of your sincerity and commitment. You have nothing to lose by trying.
Good luck.
I am sure you all understand my reasons behind refusing the offer made by the Allstrasse gentleman.

Call it selfish or whatever you like but my integrity is intact and must not be brought below the bar. I am however inclined to rethink my position so that it doesn't look like I am trying to block some people from moving forward. I will think about how we can help these people and then implement a plan that will not soil anyone of us.

Please those who are genuinely interested in taking up this business but who are hindered by the initial outlay of 20,000 or less can you please indicate on thread itself? Please also indicate your preferred sales territory. We will not consider anybody in areas where people have already taken. based on the number we have we will then think up a plan. I will however reiterate that no money must come to me directly. We will just work out something for the interested people.

Again, no emails please, just indicate on the body of the thread.

I will look at the options and revert accordingly.

I think our old sage has approached this very well. If you cannot approach the survey which is just moving around, how do you intend to handle the sales which might sometimes require you carrying the products in both arms for a distance.

Again on the capital outlay, it is quite flexible, you can buy just what you wish to sell for that day only.

As a matter of fact, in planning for Tuesday, I realized that the best way to go about this is the following;

We will only need an investment of less than 5,000 each. We will only buy what we can try out for that day. You can buy for as little as 1,000.00.

Secondly, payment will only be made on delivery. This will just be for the first week.

I am hoping that I will be able to convince the Production company in this regard.

Karin,

It just occurred to me that Omole Phase 1 has three gates along Ogunnusi Road. It will be helpful if she was specific.
The first gate from my end is opposite GT Bank, the second is opposite Grammar School while the third seems to be the main one (wider than others)close to NNPC Filling Station.
From the post it could be any of these and they are apart so moving from one to the other could take some time.
SOB Ventures is unmistakable

It's getting exciting
I understand. I think it will be the main gate. If not she should have said so. for the avoidance of doubt I have sent her an email requesting for specifics. I will post her reply. rose75, I believe you will like to be part of it.

goldman777,

We don't find you amusing. Please don't be a spoilsport. We're willing to be scammed so leave us alone. Your post here is no longer necessary or we may have to tell the moderator to take you off. A word is enough for the wise
Latestarter, the samples are offered by the producers free of cost. check an earlier post.

I think if you can pick up all the samples with Astutejay, that should be fine.

I would really have liked rose75 to bend over backwards even with her rheumatism compounded with arthritis on account of old age to be there too but then old age comes with its own complications. 75 aint easy at all.

I also see no reason why Lexaydfg cant join you.

I will arrange it in such a way that you get different product samples from all three companies once and for all. Lets just say the meet at 4.00pm will be wholesome enough and as many people as possible can arrive there and the goods can be shared among all present or represented.

The others who are interested but far flung will just have to make do with your submissions. This is however just my opinion. i am still open to suggestions.

Okay, I have two interested doughnut Suppliers right here on Nairaland dont even bother asking if I have met them, I haven't.
one goes by the Moniker nutrientrich with her factory in Mowe/Ibafo axis. A great woman who has advanced qualifications in food Science and Technology and is currently selling doughnuts in Lagos through various points. Her response to my requests for samples was that we could get samples from:

SOB Ventures Ltd. Beside Omole Phase 1 Estate gate, along Ogunnusi Road. (Berger-Ogba axis).

The price is 1000 for a 25 pieces pack.

I am sure that the first two people that can pick it it up are Astutejay and Latestarter. At the moment I cannot say if the samples are free or not. I await her response to my email in this regard. I have her pictures already but still figuring how to upload it on Nairaland.

I really don't know how. maybe some one can help me.

The second Nairalander operates from Ikotun. She sells both chin-chin and doughnuts. Her moniker is lushylosh and she has been producing doughnuts and chin-chin for 4-5 months. Her doughnuts sell for N 400.00 for 12 pieces.
She is yet to send her pictures.

The third possibility is not on Nairaland.

They are in Akute axis and they sell 2 bags of 25 pieces for 1,900. I have pictures of their products but don't know how to upload them. He has offered to provide 50 pieces of the doughnuts as free samples but he only agreed to drop it in one location preferably around Ojodu or Agege. can we have a someone volunteer to collect it and share it among interested posters? Latestarter, Astutejay, rose 25, and others not too far from Ojodu please let us know.
nutrientrich has just been convinced to drop 20 pieces of donoughts tomorrow at SOB ventures Limited by 4.00pm.

Madam karin001, I'm a little bit confused pertaining to the pricing.

You made mention that the doughnuts will be sold to us at 50:00 naira by the company, when selling it to schools and the rest, will I sell it 50 naira also or should I increase the price to 60 naira.
The recommended retail price (RRP) is 50.00. that is what the consumer pays for the product. As a distributor you will have the products discounted for you so that you can make something for yourself. So between the Price you buy it for and the recommended retail price you have your profit lodged between. This profit will always look ridiculously small when looking at it from the angle of singularity. But when you look at it in terms of volume then you marvel at the profitability of the product. Welcome to FMCG, small margins per unit multiplied by large volumes.

Okay, I have two interested doughnut Suppliers right here on Nairaland dont even bother asking if I have met them, I haven't.
one goes by the Moniker nutrientrich with he r factory in Mowe/Ibafo axis.

My apologies for the interregnum. Too many demands requiring attention simultaneously.

I don't have the location yet Pretty and old One but hope to get it early tomorrow.

Secondly, I really don't think everyone will need to taste it.

Those who do as a matter of commitment or proximity should share their experience wholly on the thread and everyone should draw from there.

Tomorrow (its tomorrow already) will be a great day.

Cheers!

I have requested for pictures from three different companies making these products which we intend to use as a launchpad.

I expect that they will send it in tonight and if I can find the 'how' I will attempt posting the pictures of the products. I was also able to convince the producers to let go pf their samples for us to taste between tomorrow and Friday.

Two of them have agreed so details will be provided for those who intend to taste these products and make further analysis on our behalf. I need volunteers in this regard as I am no longer residing in Lagos.

The samples are free and we will need to pay T.fare to get to the location, identify yourself and pick it up.

Please post your indications to volunteer please.

Mr goldman777,

I honestly do not want to know what occassioned this allegation, the verisimilitude or its essence. What is of prime importance is that the " hypnosis " is paying off and will still payoff positively on most of her readers, presently and in future.

Coming out to make such vague, unfounded and unsubstantiated accusation puts a big question mark on your personality : it takes a scammer to know a scammer.

If you intend to craftily usurp the goodwill generated by this thread, you'll have to think it over again, because the calibre of people here are way beyond your gimmicks. Enough said!

Karin,
Your integrity is being challenged. Bothered?
Judas' betrayal of Jesus paved way for the salvation of mankind, intentions of the major actor notwithstanding.
Thanks babe. The guy is just a spoilsport. you are just too much and you do have a way with words. Sharp shooting no nonsense ........!

We will continue in full swing tomorrow.

AstuteJay,

Thanks for your good gesture. I take it as the beginning of the success of this venture. I don't take it lightly and remember we could always do something together when we find something mutually beneficial. Thanks.

Karin,

I've been a bit busy and could only reach my notebook this time. I'm grateful to God for little mercies. Like I said above I take it as a sign that we are on right course. I'm combing my area tomorrow for definite assessment.

Please who is this goldman777? Why is he accusing you of a scam? Do you know him before? Please keep my mind at rest. His comment is embarrassing.

goldman777,

I will appreciate if you throw more light on your accusation. You just barge into an otherwise great conversation to make such grave accusation? Did you go through the whole thread? She refused an offer by someone to invest in the business with N500,000 which she could have been in charge of disbursing it. N20,000 x 20 = 400,000 less than the N500,000 so I'm at loss. I demand a good explanation from you
Latestarter, I am not in the least surprised. these kind of things are to be expected. This is an anonymous platform with incognito posters. Infact i have never seen his moniker before today. I honestly do not know who goldman777 is. i dont think I even want to know him. I just wish he had waited till the end of the thread.

You will now understand why at the very beginning I already preempted this kind of accusation; no contacts, no emailing, no telephoning. This thread remains what it is; an effort geared at engendering new perspectives. It is an attempt at a radical paradigm shift. I do not represent any brand/company or individual.

What I write here are universal principles and will apply to one product or the next provided they meet certain fundamental attributes.

Nobody will railroad me off this thread. I will take this thread GOD WILLING to a logical conclusion. The only reward I crave from here is to read that from all nooks of this country a few people have benefited from this write-up and have arisen from their self-imbued slumber and have made something of themselves.

I did not request for money or even patronage. Neither will I ever request for same. It is not even possible. This is and will always remain an altruistic effort supported by like minded posters whom I have NEVER met and will NEVER meet offline.

So each person should advise himself accordingly and if spending cash should be required then the people should approach it objectively as possible and be prepared to reap the benefits or otherwise of their decisions.

My experience is mine and so is yours.

We owe ourselves the responsibility of steering our own ship of fate in the right direction and thus choosing consciously or otherwise the experiences we go through. In reciprocity however, we must also eat lavishly of the fruits therefrom.
