@cjrane & co, u people should stop using Abakaliki as a reference point when discussing about red soil or any other negative attribute.
Abakaliki has clay or reddish soil but hardly will you see it visiting people like virus.
Time have changed for good, traveling from Ebonyi to Enugu is the sweetest ride you can have or are u guys mistaking Enugu -Abakaliki road to Enugu -Onistha road which is a no go area.

If you meant economic activities in the south-east,then i can tell you that the biggest market in west africa is onitsha main market,what about nnewi main market? Ariaria main market of ABA? These are great markets where you see people from outside the country tropping in to do business.......imo,abia,anambra are all oil producing states.
Many industries are located here,whatelse? People who wants to be useful to themselves can make money in the south-east legitimately.
