Some students reportedly collapsed during the Children’s Day at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State, after being affected by pepper spray.

The event on Wednesday, organised to celebrate school children in the state, turned chaotic after some male students allegedly made inappropriate advances towards female students at the venue.

A member of a private security outfit intervened, but the students were said to have regrouped and attacked the bouncer, who then sprayed pepper spray at them, affecting other students in the process.

A parent, who identified himself as Oboh Emmanuel, said the behaviour of the students attracted the attention of security personnel stationed at the stadium.

He said, “The behaviour of those uncultured students attracted the attention of the bouncers stationed at the stadium as they rebuked the male students.”

It was gathered that several students, particularly females, reportedly fainted after inhaling the substance, while many of the affected students were rushed to the Edo Specialist Hospital for treatment.

When our correspondent visited the hospital on Wednesday night, two students were still receiving treatment, while a medical personnel on duty said they would be discharged later that night.

The medical emergency is not too serious. The students were brought in after inhaling the substance, but they have all been attended to and discharged.

“We have two more here, and they will be discharged this night as they have recovered fully,” the medical personnel said.

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Patrick Ebojele, confirmed the incident and said the security personnel who used the pepper spray had been detained.

He said all the affected students, except two, had been discharged from the hospital, adding that the remaining students were being kept under observation.

“The two students are not seriously injured. Doctors want to observe them overnight. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, is still at the hospital. The man who used pepper spray has been detained.

“The incident did not happen the way it is being exaggerated. All modalities were put in place to ensure the children enjoy their day,” Ebojele s

My question has always been why Dangote is afraid of competition, his refinery is in Nigeria and he's still afraid of competition from fuel importers. This gives me the belief that his products are more expensive than imported ones. If his excuse is that imported products are of inferior quality, have we not been using imported fuel before the coming on board of his refinery? Why is Dangote afraid of competition, if his products are prized competitively, no one will dare want to import fuel

In as much dangote tried by building a refinery that successive government failed to do but he is not friendly with prices of the refined products. like you rightly said, why is now that he want to reduce price when marketers are expecting thier imported products. I really blame Jonathan who couldn't even build atleast a refinery in south south even if in bayelsea. he had opportunities to develop south south the major hub of oil and gas but failed. Thr governor is from same delta central, he better not contest governorship cos he will fail woefully but he can win Senate. he lack political foresight. he should have contest governorship in 2023. he would have be the Senate president. how ndi Biafra cum obidients will no longer call him mace snatcher again since he will be joining NDC. There is little visibility and it is very unfortunate because you guys worked wonders in 2023 to deliver the state and I do think that if there is state where Peter Obi and NDC need to really support, that state is Cross River.

No kidding oneself, I know that Odukpani/Calabar Municipal is a very complex and traditional constituency in CRS, being the epicenter of the Efik nation so giving the ticket to a neophyte will spell humiliation because of the calibre of opponents who will be in the fray.

But then, if the right homework is done, the contest is highly winnable considering the fact that APC have nothing tangible to show for both at the state and federal levels.

This appears to be a very strong case with substantial supporting evidence. There are no records indicating that he resigned from his party, PDP,before defecting; therefore, his nomination as a candidate could be legally challenged. I also believe the matter may have the backing of some influential political figures.

However, if he is eventually disqualified either before or after the election it could mean that the candidate who came second during the primaries may step in. Unfortunately, all of the other aspirants did not participate in the primaries, which could further complicate the situation.

since the amended electoral act recognizes consensus, then another candidate name will be submitted if the deadline of submission as not end. he will appeal and win.
