Universities have grown from essentially one major institution at independence to more than 250 universities across the country.

Nigeria has also become far more urbanized. In 1960, only about 15 percent of Nigerians lived in cities. Today, roughly 55 percent live in urban areas. Cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan have expanded into major economic and cultural centers. Access to electricity has increased from less than 5 percent of the population at independence to roughly 60 percent today, while telecommunications have advanced from virtually non-existent services in 1960 to widespread mobile phone and internet access.

Economically, Nigeria's overall GDP has grown from roughly $4 billion in 1960 to around $250 billion today. However, because the population has increased more than fivefold, improvements in income per person have been less dramatic. GDP per capita was approximately $93–100 in 1960 and remains under $1,000 today depending on the exchange rate and methodology used.

Nigeria's fertility rate has also declined modestly, from about 6.4 children per woman in 1960 to around 4.5–5 children today. Maternal mortality remains a challenge but has improved significantly from estimates exceeding 1,500 deaths per 100,000 births in the early independence period to roughly 800 today. Access to doctors, hospitals, medicines, and public health services has expanded considerably, though shortages remain.

In summary, Nigeria in 1960 was a nation with low literacy, very high infant mortality, limited healthcare, little electricity, few universities, and a life expectancy of only 37 years. Nigeria in 2026 is a far larger, more educated, more urbanized, and healthier society. While poverty, infrastructure deficits, and governance challenges remain significant, the basic indicators of human development show that the average Nigerian today is more likely to survive childhood, receive an education, access modern technology, and live much longer than at independence.

Ivory Coast and Senegal are more developed than Ghana. Togo and Benin Republic are not doing badly at all.

You don't seem to know much about those Francophone countries. Not all of them are like Burkina Faso and Mali.

AFRICA has had GREAT leaders throughout her past, who reigned for decades, and brought great prosperity to their empires and kingdoms.

Oba Ewuare, Queen Amina, Mansa Musa, Askia Muhammad, Shaka Zulu, Queen Amenirenas, multiple Pharaohs of Kemet and Nubia, including Khufu, Taharka, Rameses, and others.

So AFRICA has a VERY long history of great and honourable leadership.

That is because these countries lacked a mechanism for removing a non-performing leader.

If they did, they could ensure that a a real leader is in place, and he or she will be allowed to lead for as long as possible, even 30 years or more.

You just need a powerful check, similar to the Oyo Mesi of the Yorubas, who acted as a check on the king, and were so strict that if they found the king to be unfit for office, they would send him an Aroko message ordering him to commit suicide.

Of course our modern day Oyo Mesi would be less harsh, and simply order him to step down.
