Electrocution: Edo Govt condoles with Victim’s parents, school

The Edo State Government has condoled with the family of late Benedict Pius Sanni, a Junior Secondary School (JSS) 3 student of Eyaen Secondary School in Uhunmwode Local Government Area, Edo State, who was electrocuted.

Late Benedict was reported to have been electrocuted by a faulty electric pole on his way back from school on Thursday July 12, 2018.

The state government delegation, led by the Commissioner for Education, Hon. Emmanuel Agbale, who visited the grieving parents of the child, described the loss of the student as huge, and not only to the parents, but to the state and Nigeria.

Earlier at the weekend, the Chief of Staff to Governor Godwin Obaseki, Chief Taiwo Akerele, visited the family of Late Benedict, and extended the governor’s sympathy to them.

Agbale assured the family of the state governor's sympathy, adding that ongoing investigations would unravel the immediate and remote causes of the incident and the culpability of officials of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), so as to guard against re-occurrence.

Agbale asked the parents to inform the state government of the burial plans for the child.

After visiting the bereaved family, Hon. Agbale visited the Eyaen Secondary School to sympathise with staff and students of the school over the sad incident.

At the School, the Commissioner tasked students to always look out for each other, noting that the state government was sad about the incident.

He expressed displeasure over series of unsavoury reports received concerning behaviours of the students, noting, “All students must desist from unruly behaviour as anyone found wanting would be disciplined appropriately.”

He also tasked teachers to be alive to their responsibilities and assist the students to cultivate good morals that would be useful to them and the society.

Obaseki’s Education Reform: Edo Poly Usen, BEDC hold career fair, deepen town-gown synergy

The management of Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, and the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) Plc have entered into a partnership to deepen the input of the polytechnic’s Electrical/Electronics and Mechanical Engineering programmes, in the operations of the electricity company, starting with the hosting of a career talk and fair.

The event, which holds on July 20 at the polytechnic premises, for the students, especially those in the departments of Electrical/Electronics and Mechanical Engineering of the institution, will host top executives of BEDC, who will be on the lookout for new recruits for the company.

Rector of the Edo State Polytechnic, Prof. Biodun Falodun, who disclosed this in a chat with journalists, said that the institution is expanding its frontiers to explore sustainable partnerships with national and multinational companies and training students to not only be employable after graduation but also self-sustaining.

He said the partnership with BEDC is a first in the institution’s drive to court and deepen town-gown collaborations which are expected to boost the school’s capacity to better respond to the needs of the society.

Noting that the partnership will see BEDC train and recruit graduates from the school into its workforce, he said, “Edo State Polytechnic, Usen has concluded plans to partner and collaborate with national and multinational corporations beginning with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company PLC (BEDC). This new synergy would afford BEDC the ample opportunity to recruit, train and employ graduates of the school into their workforce.”

He said the fair is one of the strategies to actualise the dreams of Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for the school, adding, “We train and produce graduates who do not only fit into the various industries all over the world, but also create jobs for other Nigerians. I call on all well-meaning individuals and corporate entities to avail themselves of the ultra-modern equipment and competent and dedicated manpower that abound in the polytechnic.”

Chief Corporate Service Officer, BEDC Plc, Mr. Kunbi Labiyi, said that the company was pleased to work in conjunction with the polytechnic, and is committed to organising the fair. He said the company will be on the look-out for new recruits.

Obaseki’s Tourism Reform: Edo Govt. lists more tourist sites for upgrade to boost economy

The Edo State government has pencilled down more tourist sites and destinations for revamp, following the positive disposition of private developers to invest in the sector.

Commissioner for Arts, Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Affairs, Mr. Osazee Osemwingie-Ero, disclosed this to journalists in Benin City, the state capital.

According to the commissioner, “We have visited several of our prized tourist sites and destinations, some of them have long been abandoned, some need maintenance while some need revamp, which we intend to do through public private partnership (PPP).”

He added that his team has also “visited the Crocodile Lake in Lampese, the Somorika and Ososo Hills. About a year ago, we identified 56 of these sites and work is ongoing on some of them.

“We have identified some of the monuments around Ring Road in Benin City, the state capital, which led to our meeting with the local government chairmen, in line with the directive of Governor Godwin Obaseki to reclaim and beautify them, which we are working on.”

He further said that “at Egbine on Ekenhuan Road, we have identified and secured the grave site of the late Captain Philip, who was among the Europeans that were at the center of events that led to the 1897 Benin massacre by the British.

“We have cleared the site, erected a big sign post there to identify the exact location. There is someone there who ensures the place is maintained daily.

“Also close to the grave, down Gelegele, is the Oba Ovonramwen stop-over place before he was moved to Calabar through the Gelegele waterways. These places are sites where tourists can visit, and we are working round the clock to reposition them for domestic and foreign tourists," he said.

The commissioner added: “We have three investors who are ready with their proposals to develop the Sokponba Blue Water Resort. It will increase the economic activities in the area, create jobs, and generate revenue for the state government.

“In Edo Central Senatorial Zone, we have the Udo Resort in Igueben, we have visited the site, there is a lot of work to be done there. We have the Amao Water Fall in Igueben, where the water from Orhionmwon River meet the clean water in Igueben without mixing."

PoliticsObaseki Mourns Dahiru Musdapher by kenedyagbons(op): 3:01pm On Jan 24, 2018
The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has commiserated with the family of the late former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Dahiru Musdapher, the people of Jigawa State and Nigerians, over the death of the former CJN. Obaseki noted that Justice Musdapher’s death is a great loss to his family and the nation at large. While praying the Almighty Allah to grant his soul eternal rest, the governor said that “the late Jurist will be remembered for his life-long contributions to the nation’s judiciary which have been referenced by eminent Nigerians since the news of his death broke.” He said Justice Musdapher’s commitment to hard work saw him rise through the judiciary ranks, beginning with a laudable practice in the bar, his appointment as the Attorney General of old Kaduna State, a Judge in the Kano State Judiciary and his rise to the position of the Chief Judge of the state before he was promoted to the position of the Justice of the Court of Appeal. He was elevated as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and retired five years ago as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). Obaseki consoled the family to “find comfort in the good and exemplary life of Justice Musdapher,” which he described as “a model for Nigerians aspiring to attain similar height in life.”

PoliticsEdo Agog As APC Receives PDP Reps Member, Ex-pdp Guber Aspirant, Followers by kenedyagbons(op): 9:47am On Jan 21, 2018
The Edo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) dealt a big blow to the camp of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state on Friday, with the decamping of major PDP heavyweights, including Member representing Egor/Ikpoba Okha Federal Constituency, Honourable Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma and former gubernatorial aspirant of the PDP, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki led the party leadership to receive Hon. Agbonayinma and Hon. Iduoriyekemwen and their followers at its Mega Rally, which hosted party chieftains and members across the state, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Governor Obaseki, who welcomed the new members of the party, said that they have further swelled the ranks of the party to become an indomitable force in the state, adding that they would enjoy all due benefits as party members.

He maintained that the infrastructural development witnessed in the state is the result of the solid foundation laid by his predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

According to him, “Edo is working today, because Oshiomhole laid the foundation. Edo people have not seen anything yet. We will continue to demonstrate efforts in sustaining good governance.

“I am making effort to attract investors to the state as this administration is committed to building the biggest industrial park in Nigeria. On our promise to facilitate job opportunities and engage 200, 000 youths, we will achieve that before the year 2020.”

He assured that a modular refinery will be built in the state as part of the outcome for his recent visit to China, promising to replicate development in every local government in the state.

On his part, Oshiomhole said that the action of the decampees to Edo APC reinforces the total clearing and cleansing of the opposition in the state, who, according to him, balkanised the state almost beyond repair.

He stressed that the APC is running on the principle of social democracy, making a case for the state chapter of the party to reclaim Delta State from the PDP, to extend the developmental strides to their brothers and sisters with whom they formed the old Bendel State.

He said, “Our aim in APC is to transfer power to the people as we have successfully taken power from the few who claimed to be godfathers and impoverished the masses.

On the charge for the state APC to advance into Delta State, he said, “Together, we will sweep whatever is left out of Edo State and Delta. Comrades, we have secured Edo State, now we must advance to Delta. In the spirit of Bendel, which was governed by the late Samuel Ogbemudia, we must carry more brooms to Asaba and sweep all the way to Warri and install an APC governor in Asaba, so that the resources of Asaba can be used for the benefit of Deltans.”
