LOKOJA—A lecturer with Kogi State University, KSU, Anyigba, Associate Professor Justice Olunight.
Otitolaye, has been reported killed by cult members in the institution.

Vanguard gathered that Professor Otitolaye, who had been championing war against examination malpractice in the institution, was abducted around Stadium Road, near the campus on Friday night, on his way to a supermarket.

His bullet-riddled body was found in the early of hours of Sunday at Ejule, which is about 8 kilometres away from the school.

The cultists were said to have fired sporadic shots into the air to scare away people living around the area before taking the lecturer to an unknown destination.

The murdered lecturer, simply called Otis, was a renowned agriculturist, who was a former pre-degree director and a lecturer in Faculty of Agriculture in the Department of Agric Economics and Extension at the university.

Otis, who was said to be a jovial, nice and well-respected person, also held a chieftaincy title from his home town, Kabba, headquarters of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of the state.

The body of the lecturer has been deposited at the university teaching hospital.

Some lecturers and students expressed shock over the incident, and decried the incessant killings in the institution.

They called on the management to take urgent steps to address the ugly trend.

When contacted, KSU Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, said the body had summoned an emergency meeting to look into the case of the murdered lecturer.

Meanwhile, a 400 level Mathematical Science student of the school, Jimoh Faruk, has also been killed by the cult group.

It was gathered that issues on how to settle a misunderstanding between Rasheed’s wife and another woman degenerated into a violent fight. It was during the process of partisan interference that Kemi angrily tore the man's dress, held his manhood and bit it off Mr Rasheed's manhood live.
Aside from the manhood which was bitten off, she also inflicted a big sore on the man’s abdomen. Rasheed was later rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital in the area for medical attention while Kemi was handed over to men of the Nigeria Police Force in the nearby police station.
Kemi, a mother of two, further said they had not been on speaking terms since she relocated to the area in June and Rasheed’s wife had not been greeting her and her friend. “My friend, Adijat, has not been greeting and talking with Rasheed’s wife, I know that was why he decided to engage me in a fight,” she added.

A Brazilian man was left in total shock when doctors during a radical surgery, removed a live fish from his intestine.

During the operation, a surgeon pulled out the eel-like fish known to grow up to a length of 125cm, which had apparently burrowed into the man’s body.

Miraculously, the fish was still very much alive when it was removed – and can be seen wriggling around. The creature later had to be euthanised, according to the Brazilian news website, esmeraldanoticias.com.

The unidentified man, who has recovered from the operation made a formal complaint after staff at the Hospital Universitário in Londrina filmed the surgery. The video of him and the fish, known locally as a piramboia, has become a viral sensation after it was posted on the website LiveLeak.

There are very strong indications that Stephen Keshi will not continue as the Super Eagles coach, on interim or permanent basis, after the match against Sudan in Abuja on Wednesday. The PUNCH learnt that three factors have contributed largely to his continued stay as the Nigeria coach despite the humiliating 1-0 loss to Sudan on Saturday.

The decision by the president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, to hold far reaching discussions with his members; the need to also brief higher authorities and the search for a quality replacement have combined to keep Keshi on the driving seat going into the reverse match against Sudan billed for Wednesday. Our correspondent learnt on Monday that Keshi could be asked to step aside after the Wednesday match.

A member of the NFF board who spoke with The PUNCH on Monday said that a meeting of the Federation had been fixed for 8pm on Tuesday and that the meeting billed for Abuja will take the decision on the way forward with the national team.

He said, “You know that the decision to ask Keshi to go or continue is a major one that can’t be taken by just a few persons. The board is meeting on Tuesday and I know that all the questions will be answered by that meeting.”

Amuyefa, son of a former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, has been killed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The deceased, popularly known as Oyoms, was killed on Saturday in the Middle East country.

The deceased’s father, who confirmed this to one of our correspondents, said, “He was killed in Dubai.”

The reason for Oyoms’ killing has yet to be established, but family sources alleged on Monday that the deceased was assassinated.

Two different versions have been given concerning where the former governor’s son was killed.

The first version, one of our correspondents learnt, was that Oyoms was found dead by the staircase of his father’s house in Dubai.

However, the second version alleged that the deceased’s body was found in his hotel room in Dubai, giving the impression that he might have been assassinated.

It could not be established whether Oyom’s father had travelled to Dubai to take possession of his son’s remains.

Indication that he might not have travelled out of the country emerged when he responded to a text message sent to his mobile phone on Monday by 12noon by one of our correspondents.

It was later learnt at about 2pm that the bereaved father had left for Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, in company with one of his sons to probably board a flight to Dubai.

However, as of the time of filing this report, the circumstances leading to Oyom’s death remained sketchy.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday said he received with shock and sadness the news of the death of Alamieyeseigha’s son.

He said he and his wife, Patience, shared in the grief of the deceased’s family.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President pledged the support of the Federal Government as the family strive to unravel the circumstances surrounding their son’s death.

The statement read, “On behalf of his family and the Federal Government, President Jonathan extends heartfelt condolences to Oyamuyefa’s father, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and his entire family on the untimely loss of a very dear son in the prime of his life.

“The President and the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, share their pain and grief over the death of Oyamuyefa in circumstances that are still unclear.

“President Jonathan assures Chief Alamieyeseigha and his family of the full support of the Federal Government as they strive to unravel the true circumstances of the young man’s death.

“He prays that God Almighty will receive Oyamuyefa’s soul and comfort his grieving parents and siblings.”

Remember the sci-fi thriller GATTACA? For those who never saw the film and/or eschewed all pop culture in the late 90’s for some reason, it was a popular movie that came out in 1997 about genetically modified human beings. Now some literally genetically modified human babies born that same year are entering their senior year of high school.

The first successful transfer of genetic material for this purpose was published in a U.S. medical journal in 1997 and then later cited in a Human Reproduction publication in 2001. Scientists injected 30 embryos in all with a third person’s genetic material. The children who have been produced by this method actually have extra snippets of mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA, from two mothers – meaning these babies technically have three parents.

It’s still unclear whether all 30 babies turned out healthy.  The Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science (IRMS) at St Barnabas, participants of the experiment, finally began following up with at least 17 of the now teenagers earlier this year, according to the UK’s Independent. We’ve reached out to IRMS to get those follow up results but have not heard back yet.


While we don’t know the identity of these genetically modified teens, or even how they are doing health wise at this point, the ethics of creating designer humans is still very much a hot button issue. Modifying humans genetically to create some superior race of people or simply to chose one preferred visual trait over another has been debated among scientists, politicians and others ad nauseam. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration no longer even allows such genetic modification to embryos, citing them as a “biological product” and thus under its jurisdiction. They put the kibosh on this practice back in 2002. However, these original embryonic modifications were for parents who would potentially pass on severe genetic diseases to their children if it weren’t for scientific intervention.

These teens could potentially pass on their genetically modified material to the next generation. So even if no other humans are legally able to be created this way in the future, we’ve already introduced biologically modified genetic material into the population with the potential to affect large swaths of future generations to come via reproduction. We’ll be sure to update you, should IRMS release any information on the health of these teens.

The "Salute to a Queen" was once a newsreel staple . . . the queen in question being the fabled ocean liner "Queen Mary." Long since retired, her many voyages still deserve a salute. Tracy Smith does the honors:

September 26, 1934: launch day for the pride of the British commercial fleet.

In the depths of the Great Depression, she was a symbol of hope.

The Queen Mary set a new standard for elegance, and was a favorite among the A-List: Bob Hope, Fred Astaire, Clark Gable.

She was the last word in comfort and style, and capable of crossing the Atlantic in record time.

And at the dawn of World War II, the Mary's speed would, in a way, become a weapon.

Historian Everette Hoard, the Queen Mary's Honorary Commodore, said, "Her top speed is about 32.5 knots."

Compared to a surfaced U-Boat, whose speed would be 13-14 knots, or 8 knots submerged. "The Queen Mary was even faster than the torpedoes themselves, which traveled along about 25 knots," said Hoard.

And so the world's largest ocean liner became the world's largest troop ship.

Bigger than the Titanic and faster than any German submarine, the Queen Mary was just the thing the Allies needed to take American soldiers to Europe. On one trip alone, she carried more than 16,600 troops -- a record that stands to this day.

Every other week, the Queen -- clad in drab gray war paint -- would haul an average of 15,000 American GIs to Europe.

"It was very, very cramped," said Hoard. "The men ate in two shifts down in the Grand Salon. A ham-slicing machine worked 24 hours a day trying to keep up with the demand for ham and eggs. Eggs were boiled in 55-gallon drums, with steam jetted up from the boiler rooms."

The passage took about seven days, after which the Queen would head back to New York, and do it all again.

The Nazis were not amused. Adolf Hitler offered $250,000 to any submarine captain who could sink her . . . but she outran them all.

"Every U-Boat commander in the German navy would like to have sunk the Queen Mary," said Hoard.

But, he said, she was never even fired upon.

In the buildup to D-Day, the Queen Mary carried nearly half a million GIs to Great Britain, among them Army Private Arnie Boots.

Like so many GIs far from home, Boots met an English girl, and promptly married her.

June Allen was 16 when she married Boots shortly before he shipped out for D-Day.

Smith asked, "And what was it about this guy?"

"I don't know. There was two million GIs stationed at Cheltenham during the war. And you know, you'd see so many, but there was just something about Arnie," she replied.

She wouldn't see him again . . . that is, not until after the war ended, and the U.S. Army started shipping around 60,000 British war brides to their new lives in America.

June and her young son came to the U.S. aboard the Queen Mary.

"I was only 18 years old, and I had never been on a ship," she said. "And I had never seen a ship that size in my life. I got out of the bus and I looked up, up, up and up. It took my breath away! I couldn't believe the size of it."

And instead of the cramped quarters their husbands endured, the war brides who came over on the Mary sailed in high style.

Allen said it was "a little scary," but also exciting for the young woman to go to a new country. "Plus, being on the greatest ship in the world. It was so thrilling."

For June, the voyage was an absolute dream. The reunion with her husband -- not so much.

"I had never seen him out of uniform, and I didn't know him," she told Smith. "I thought, 'Is that him?' I'd been married to the man almost three years, and I didn't recognize him. I thought, 'Is that Arnie? Or isn't it?' That's what wartime does."

One thing that may continue to be relevant even if other things fail in marriage is sex. It is so important that it sometimes determines the wellness and longevity of some marriages.
As much as it is believed that most men have sex as a form of enjoyment, findings have shown that many women, on the other hand, see sex as more of obligation, thus, it does not take priority in their to-do list.
Even though not all men who have sex for pleasure understand its benefits for their well being and general health, women may not also fare better when it comes to understanding the benefits, thus, sex occupies the back seat in their minds.
A new study by HealthyWomen, a leading health information source for women, has revealed that women who have regular sex will have less wrinkles, more initimacy with their partners and better immune systems. This study however states that only few women recognise the wellness benefits of a healthy sex life.
According to the study, about 51 per cent believe that engaging in sexual activity a few times a week is sexually healthy while just 42 per cent of the women said they believe sexual health is very important to their overall health and about 66 per cent said they only engage in sexual activity once a week or less often.
The survey was conducted online among 1,031 women who reside in the United States, aged 18 and above.
According to the Executive Director of HealthyWomen, Elizabeth Battaglino, many women don’t really understand the physical benefits of an active sex life.
While calling on women to rethink how they view sex and start to prioritise their sexual health and wellness more, she added that beyond the benefit of forming a closer bond with the partner, an active sex life can decrease stress, strengthen pelvic floor muscles, increase immune system function and burn calories.
Commenting on the study, a psychiatrist, Naomi Greenblatt, who specialises in women’s health, agreed with the study, saying while pleasure and intimacy with a partner should be a primary motivation to have sex, the health and wellness benefits are a big bonus.
“There seems to be a growing trend in women having sex for obligation, not enjoyment purposes. Women say there are only 24 hours in the day, and they simply are not prioritising sex,” Greenblatt added.
Most women believe connecting with their partner is the most according to the study, important aspect of their sex life.
A cross section of women who spoke with our correspondent said they did not know that sex has health benefits. While some said they sometimes have sex for enjoyment with their partners, some others said they have it out of the need to satisfy their husbands and boost their intimacy.
“It’s interesting that women rank many factors of their sex life, such as connecting with their partners, as important but aren’t highly satisfied with those factors. Good sex may be the ideal but it is not the reality for many women,” said Battaglino.
A psychologist, Miss Oladele Olaitan, said apart from the child-bearing factor, most women are not aware of the health benefits of sex. She observed a growing trend in women having sex because they see it as a form of duty to their husbands. She added that this could explain why a lot of women reach orgasm during sex.
She said, “From observation, most men place a higher priority on sex than most women do, even though it depends on individuals. It is possible to say that it is a pleasure for men and obligation for the women because women may not be aware of the health benefits of sex.”
The benefits of sex for women are physiological and psychological. It can help reduce stress, give energy, reduce wrinkles, improve intimacy between partners, reduce pain and boost the immune system, amongst other benefits.
A study carried out by the journal of sexual medicine revealed that women who do not have sex more than twice a month fell sick more often than those who have regular orgasm, not just sex.
