Politics › PDP Slams INEC's Decision To Extend Deadline For Party Primaries by Kwanza(op): 10:19pm On May 27, 2022 |
The Peoples Democratic Party has frowned on INEC’s decision to extend the deadline for party primaries by six days.
PDP spokesperson, Mr Debo Ologungba, said INEC has changed the goalpost in the middle of the game, stressing that certainty of elections is the bedrock of democracy.
He was speaking at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, where the PDP is scheduled to hold its special National Convention on Saturday.
“The consequences will be grave for the country. And of course we have to look at that,” he said.
“The bedrock of democracy is certainty of elections and the fact that the rules are clear to every participant; and you cannot shift the goalpost in the middle of the game.” https://www.channelstv.com/2022/05/27/pdp-slams-inecs-decision-to-extend-deadline-for-party-primaries/

Politics › PDP Primaries: Anyim, NWC At War Over Ebonyi Delegates by Kwanza(op): 6:01pm On May 27, 2022 |
Barely 24 hours to the presidential primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Senate president and Presidential aspirant, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, has warned the National Working Committee (NWC) on the absence of list of delegates from Ebonyi State, for the special national convention of the party.
In an open letter made available to journalists and addressed to the National chairman of PDP, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, and chairman of the PDP Special National Convention Planning Committee, Senator David Mark, Anyim said he had gone through the lists of delegates from other states and the FCT but could not find that of Ebonyi State.
In the statement signed by his media aide, Sam Nwaobasi, Anyim said despite assurances by the National Organising Secretary of the party that the “technical error” would be rectified, the problem remained as at 12noon of Friday, May 27.
“The chairman may recall that during the meeting of Presidential aspirants and the Special Convention Committee held on the 26th day of May 2022 at the Legacy House, the entire delegates list for all the states were presented to each of the aspirants.”
“I discovered that the Ebonyi State delegates list was not included. On inquiry from the National Organizing Secretary, he informed me that there was a technical error and it will be corrected today.
“As at the time of writing this letter i.e. 12 noon 27th/05/2022, I have no clue about the fate of the delegates from Ebonyi State.
“The purpose of this letter is to alert all concerned that disenfranchising delegates from Ebonyi State or any state for that matter will fundamentally affect the election.” Anyim said. https://dailytrust.com/pdp-primaries-anyim-nwc-at-war-over-ebonyi-delegates

Politics › Jonathan Defends Buhari, Backs Removal Of Section 84 Of Electoral Act by Kwanza(op): 12:02pm On May 27, 2022 |
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has recommended the removal of Section 84 of the new Electoral Act, to allow political parties to decide modalities for candidates’ elections.
Section 84(12) reads: “No political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the convention or congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.”
President Muhammadu Buhari had also expressed his reservation about the section of the electoral act. The President through the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, also filed a suit seeking to nullify the section.
However, Jonathan gave his support for the removal of the section at the public presentation of a book titled “Political Party Governance” by former Minister of State Power, Dr. Mohammed Wakil, on Thursday in Abuja.
The former president said that the National Assembly should allow political parties to have the leverage of doing certain things differently, as their needs were different.
“Give parties the leverage. The key thing is that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is regulating them. “They mentor them, and the system they will adopt in selecting their candidates must be documented in their constitution and copies deposited with INEC. That is what will be used to judge that party.
“Parties are not parastatals of government and the National Assembly cannot make laws that choke the political parties. That is my take on this controversial issue,” he said.
Jonathan also rated as low, the ongoing primaries by political parties to elect candidates for the 2023 General Elections because of provisions of the 2022 Electoral Act.
He said that the primary where only elected delegates were allowed to elect candidates, was already a failed process.
“The National Assembly made alterations to the Electoral Law, and now only what they call the `elected delegates’ are to elect people that would vote. Then one day Nigerians will go to the polls and think they are voting a president?.
“But who presented presidential candidates for you? Very few people at the national level, at the state level, at the local districts, at the federal and state constituencies.”
Jonathan cited a Federal Constituency in Bayelsa State with only two wards and just only six delegates that elected PDP candidates because every ward had three elected delegates. Jonathan said the situation was even more worrisome when the delegates were unknown figures in society.
“We have former governors, former deputy governors, former Senators, and all the rest. But then, we have only one elected delegate that you don’t know where he is coming from.
“A delegate that will come to Abuja to select who becomes the presidential candidate. Is that the kind of democracy we will practice?
“But those of us who have been involved know that it is terrible. Are we bringing those who really know who is who to elect these delegates or those delegates that can be bought over with money?”
Jonathan advised the National Assembly to make laws that would help solve problems, not those that were irrelevant or designed to create problems.
“And laws must be made assuming those who are making the law are blind to any interest just like the judges, who rely on only the scale and the sword.
“Laws must not be made to target a group of individuals or an individual.
“And when you go into that system of making laws, you will make this terrible mistake that messes things up like the primaries that are going on now.
“I think we should rather think about institutionalized democracy and make it as our culture,” he said.
Jonathan also decried situations where those contesting openly shared money and gift, saying those actions should be criminalized.
“In some countries, you cannot give a gift like what we normally do here; we give bags of rice with photographs of candidates and other tangibles.
“We distribute them freely. That is a criminal offense and we expect the National Assembly to make laws to criminalize that.”
He added that President Muhammadu Buhari should not be blamed for delaying assent to that amended section of the bill.
Jonathan noted that there were lots of processes a bill must pass through before the president could sign. He said the document was supposed to go through a drafting process in the National Assembly with all their committees and joint committees.
The former president added that when the draft was ready, the speaker and senate president, as well as executive aides, would take a look at it.
“That is the bureaucracy so that the President does not make mistakes.
“So nobody should expect the President to wake up and just sign. It must go through a process.
“People must do their work in this country, you cannot just be taking money and be sleeping. This is a wake-up call to the National Assembly,“ Jonathan added. https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2022/05/27/jonathan-defends-buhari-backs-removal-of-section-84-of-electoral-act/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

Politics › Peter Obi: Mass Resignation Hits Anambra PDP, Ozigbo, Others Leave by Kwanza(op): 6:36pm On May 26, 2022 |
DAILY POST can authoritatively report that mass resignation has hit the Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following the recent resignation of the former governor, Mr Peter Obi from the party.
Obi, a presidential aspirant had on Wednesday resigned his membership of the PDP and also withdrawn from the party’s presidential primary.
Obi had cited irregularities in the processes leading to the party’s presidential primary election as a reason for his resignation.
His action was said to have dampened the zeal and aspiration of some of the party’s aspirants to national and state assembly, as it is believed that Obi’s popularity in the state has a way of affecting other aspirants of his party positively.
Mr Valentine Ozigbo, PDP’s governorship candidate in the November 2021 governorship election in Anambra who is running for the Senate has also withdrawn from the race.
Valentine Ayika and George Ozodinobi, former members of the national assembly are among those who also withdrew and resigned from the party.
Ozigbo in his resignation letter which was addressed to the National Chairman of the party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, said the party has been highjacked by three Senatorial aspirants and their cohorts.
He listed the aspirants to include; Senator Uche Ekwunife, Senator Stella Oduah and self-styled godfather of Anambra politics, Chris Uba, who is also running for the Senate.
In the letter sighted by our correspondent, Ozigbo said: “I wish to bring to your attention a series of retrogressive developments in our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, particularly in Anambra South.
“Sir, I would like to state this clearly. The actions of Chris Uba and Linus Ukachukwu, with the support of Uche Ekwunife, and Stella Oduah, and a few others are the reasons PDP in Anambra may end up fielding no candidate in the 2023 elections.”
Consequently, he announced his withdrawal from the primary. A source stated that he is also on his way out of the party.
Ayika and Ozodinobi who are also National Assembly aspirants also withdrew from the primary, while also resigning from the party.
A source within the Anambra PDP, however, told DAILY POST that more prominent politicians in the state will still dump PDP in the coming days. The source said it was in anger that Peter Obi left the party, as Uba and others were working to humiliate him in the state, even as he battled his fellow presidential aspirants.
“More people will leave before the end of this week. It is true that PDP in Nigeria has problem, but the problem of Anambra PDP is far more than that of the national. It is still the reason they have not held primary election for any position, till today.
“The plot is for all Obi line up to move en mass, and join Labour Party, from where they will give PDP a fight,” the source said. https://dailypost.ng/2022/05/26/peter-obi-mass-resignation-hit-anambra-pdp-ozigbo-others-leave/

Politics › Electoral Act 2022: Supreme Court Reserves Judgement On Eligibility Suit by Kwanza(op): 1:41pm On May 26, 2022 |
The Supreme Court Justices on Thursday enabled strong arguments by lawyers representing the Federal Government, National Assembly and the Rivers State Government on the constitutionality of the powers of the National Assembly to frame a section of the Electoral Act 84 (12) barring political appointees the electoral process.
The apex court’s seven- man panel led by Justice Musa Dattijo reserved judgment on the dispute to a later date ( that will be communicated to parties) after taking submissions from the lawyers representing President Muhammadu Buhari, Attorney-General of the Federation, National Assembly, Nigerian Bar Association and the Rivers State Government.
The FG had approached the apex court insisting that Section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act which bars political appointees from voting in an election contravenes the voting rights of all Nigerians as enshrined in Sections 137, 147 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
But NASS, Rivers State and the NBA disagreed and urged the Supreme Court to dismiss FG’s suit for having no right to appear before the court and because the FG must not be allowed to assume jurisdiction in lawmaking which is the exclusive powers of the National Assembly.
The panel of the court animated proceeding when it started to ask the counsel pointed questions on their views of the law.
Chief Lateef Fagbemi SAN, who represents the FG, began by insisting that the Electoral Act 2022, having reassured that a political party shall not impose condition on any aspirant; the NASS cannot take away the rights that have been given to all through Section 84 (12).
After his submission, one of the panel members then asked him, “Is being a political appointee, a right or an appointment?”
Fagbemi replied that “it is a right”.
The judge threw back the question in another way, saying “You mean, one can insist to be appointed? “
Fagbemi said that although it was a privilege but that both the president and the appointee have rights–one to appoint and the other to be appointed– backed by the 1999 Constitution.
He maintained that the NASS in complete disregard for the Constitution, recognized a lawmaker for election and yet denied a political appointee when both have same criteria listed for them to be qualified for any public position in the country.
On his part, counsel for Rivers State, Emmanuel Ukala SAN, challenged the court’s jurisdiction to determine the case.
He argued that under the Supreme Court Act, it is only empowered to determine suit from the president against NASS, but only on issues bordering on the difference between NASS and the executive like issues of budget.
One of the panel members then asked Ukala, “Is the president under any duty to protect the constitution?”
Ukala responded that when it comes to the National Assembly, the president’s duty is limited to protecting any encroachment into the executive realm.
He added that where a president had already assented to a bill like the Electoral Act, before any court action or right can arise, it has to be a person affected by that act and the rightful place to sue is at the Federal High Court.
Then another member of the panel asked, “If the president wants his political appointee to contest an election, don’t you think he is affected by Section 84(12) ?”
He replied saying, “The president will not be affected, it is the presidency. My lord, he may be affected in his personal capacity, then let him go to the Federal High Court. Infact, he has some cases against this act at the Federal High Court.”
One of the panel members further asked Ukala whether the NASS tried to further amend the Act in other to appease the president, and if Buhari has the right to come to the apex court for constitutional interpretation.
He admitted that the NASS did and the president’s request failed before the lawmakers.
“No, he can’t come to the Supreme Court, he should go to the NASS who has powers for enactment. The president can only assent or refuse to assent a bill.
“Section 84 (3) and 84 (12) of the Electoral Act is not a matter of qualification but a matter of internal democracy which the Constitution is backing.
“This entire suit should be dismissed,” he said.
The NBA told the panel that it is within the right of the NASS to make laws as they had done in Section 84 (12).
As for discrimination as argued by the federal government, the NBA lawyer argued that the 1999 constitution as well as the Electoral Act, allows for discrimination in certain aspects, except in areas of sex, religion, political opinion, ethnic, among others.
He argued that other political appointees like public servants or governors are allowed to vote or be voted for by the 1999 constitution, adding that no reference was made to ministers.
The NBA contended that the ill Section 84 (12) wants to solve is to provide a level playing field for all Nigerians and block ministers from using state resources to advance their political ambitions.
The panel queried the NBA on whether NASS can make any legislation that amounted to defining the content of a political party constitution?
“Yes, they can,” the NBA lawyer replied.
Fagbemi, again countered all the defendants by saying that no one has denied that Buhari showed concern about that Section before he signed it, leading him to write to NASS and eventually come to court.
But another panel member asked, “Did the law provide that where the president does not agree to a bill sent to him, he can tell NASS to change it? Or come to the Supreme Court if they fail to?”
“Under the law, you may not find it, but by convention, it is not illegal for him to come to court because he has sworn to uphold the constitution,” Fagbemi responded.
Subsequently, the panel held that “judgment in this suit is hereby reserved and date for its delivery will be communicated to parties.” |

Politics › BREAKING: Dagogo’s Suit To Stop Rivers PDP Governorship Primaries Fails by Kwanza(op): 2:11pm On May 25, 2022 |
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday dismissed an application filed by Rivers State governorship aspirant, Hon. Farah Dagogo, seeking an interim order to stop the People’s Democratic party from holding its primaries in Rivers State.
Justice Taiwo Taiwo held that the application was not brought on time and that the court could not be induced with his claims for urgency.
On Tuesday, Dagogo, through his counsel, D. Lanre SAN, accused PDP of conniving with Rivers state Governor Nyesom Wike to prevent his client from participating in the governorship screening exercise.
But the PDP had challenged the court’s jurisdiction on the matter and argued that Dagogo wanted to frustrate the PDP primaries.
The Independent National Electoral Commission asked the judge to refuse Dagogo’s exparte motion.
On Wednesday, Justice Taiwo agreed with the defendants and dismissed the suit.
He then adjourned to June 7 for hearing on Dagogo’s substantive matter as well as the issue of jurisdiction raised by the PDP.
In his main suit, Dagogo asked the court to determine whether it was lawful for PDP not to screen him even after he had complied with all instructions by the party’s screening committee. |

Politics › PDP Primaries: Dino Melaye Loses Rerun To Reps Member, Tajudeen Yusuf by Kwanza(op): 6:30pm On May 24, 2022 |
The hope of Senator Dino Melaye to return to the National Assembly was on Tuesday evening dashed by delegates who voted more for his political rival, Hon. Tajudeen Yusuf
Dino failed to secure the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ticket when he polled 99 votes against TJ Yusuf who is currently representing Kabba/Bunu Ijumu Federal constituency, who polled 163 votes. TJ Yusuf, a three terms House of Representatives member had levelled with Dino on Monday night when they both scored 88 votes apiece; leading to a rerun.
But at the rerun on Tuesday, TJ was able to secure a majority of the votes. While TJ was rooting for Nyesom Wike in the state, Dino Melaye was backing Atiku Abubakar, turning the game to a royal rumble of two influential presidential candidates of the party.
TJ however was able to draw sympathy from the camp of the former governor Ibrahim Idris whose favourite candidate, Sam Aro, polled 72 votes on the first run of the senate primary on Monday. The Sam Aro bloc vote swung the election in favour of TJ Yusuf and permanently sealed Dino Melaye’s fate as far as 2023 Senatorial ambition is concerned. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/05/breaking-pdp-primaries-dino-melaye-fails-to-secure-pdp-ticket-loses-rerun-to-reps-member-tj-yusuf/ |

Politics › 2023 Elections: Seven Political Parties Merge To Become ‘3rd Force’ Mega Party by Kwanza(op): 4:24pm On May 23, 2022 |
In a bid to put up a stronger fight against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and frontline opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Seven political parties have joined forces ahead of the upcoming 2023 general elections.
According a communique on Monday, the coalition said it took 15 months of deliberations and agreements, for the Allied Political Parties and the National Consultative Front, comprising of 6 parties, to decide to join forces with the Labour Party to present a joint Presidential Candidate for the 2023 polls.
Spokesperson for the National Consultative Front (NCFront), Ms Bello Bilikis, revealed that the formal endorsement of the Labour Party by the ‘3rd Force’ Movement arose from recent meetings and activities of separate political commissions of the NLC and the TUC with their allies like the Femi Falana-led The Political Alternative Movement (TPAM) and the Civil Society, towards repositioning the Labour Party as an “alternative platform for rescuing Nigeria ahead of the 2023 general elections.”
According to Ms Bilikis, the parties in the coalition are New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), People’s Redemption Party (PRP), Labour Party (LP) and National Rescue Movement (NRM).
The spokesperson further stated that Prof Attahiru Jega of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), Professor Pat Utomi of the Labour Party and Senator Saidu Dansadau of the National Rescue Movement, are also onboard with the arrangement and have been instructed to build a Mega Electoral Alliance and also adopt of a single line of candidates among the seven allied parties involved in the ‘3rd Force’ alliance talks for the 2023 elections.
“With the novel synergy between the Labour Party and the NCFront, the convening platform of the 3rd Force Movement, which is also today the largest political mass movement in the country, Nigerians can be rest assured that the glorious future we all desire for our dear country, is now achievable by 2023, especially with the brewing implosion hovering over the ruling cartel of APC and PDP, which will soon burst into unpreventable disintegration after their party primaries,” the communique partly read.
“To this end, an inclusive Consensus Technical Committee to screen presidential candidates and other candidates of ‘3rd Force’ allied Parties towards the adoption of a single line of candidates across all 2023 elections, is expected to be set up next month after the conclusion of all party primaries.”
Furthermore, Ms Bilikis noted in the brief that the ‘3rd Force’ Mega Electoral Pact for the 2023 elections is proposed around agreement on Labour Charter of Demand, EndSARS Youths’ Demands and Constitutional Referendum for Nigeria, among others to be agreed as terms of the Alliance for the 2023 elections.
According to her, the ‘3rd Force’ Coalition Leaders and Parties are expected to jointly address the nation sometime this week in a bid to announce the new agenda to save Nigeria from imminent collapse and anarchy foisted by the ruling parties in Nigeria. https://www.channelstv.com/2022/05/23/2023-elections-seven-political-parties-merge-to-become-3rd-force-mega-party/

Politics › 2023: Buhari To Meet Governors, NASS Caucus, Zero In On Consensus by Kwanza(op): 1:01am On May 23, 2022 |
The screening of presidential aspirants by the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier scheduled for today has been postponed.
This is coming on the heels of meetings President Muhammadu Buhari has scheduled with APC governors, National Assembly caucus and presidential aspirants towards arriving at a consensus presidential candidate for the party.
Daily Sun gathered that the leadership of the APC shifted the screening of presidential aspirants, pending the meetings President Buhari has lined up. Just as it happened before the recent National Convention to pick APC National Chairman, sources revealed that President Buhari is aiming to achieve consensus in the choice of presidential candidate and would, in the meetings, unveil his preferred aspirant.
Sources revealed that the meetings would start with Governors, followed by National Assembly caucus and finally the Presidential aspirants.
Nobody knows the choice of President Buhari among the aspirants in the race for APC presidential ticket. Sources however revealed that the President, during the last trip abroad, made up his mind on who to support for the ticket and who would be running mate.
It was gathered that President Buhari, after unveiling his choice in the meetings, would push for consensus, just as it happened during the process of picking APC’s National Chairman.
After the President zeroed in on Senator Abdullahi Adamu as preferred National Chairman for APC, he held meetings with governors elected on the platform of the party and National Assembly caucus, where he told them the direction. Following that, other Chairmanship aspirants were persuaded to withdraw from the race.
Apparently, reading the writing on the wall, in choice of consensus candidate, a known aspirant from South West is believed to be making arrangements to defect to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) this week to pursue his presidential ambition.
The presidential aspirant, it was gathered, said in order to having satisfied himself that he pursued his ambition to the end, his name must be on the ballot in next year’s election.
On the aspirant President Buhari has elected to support, sources said he has interest in North, South East and South South and that the presidential ticket would have North/South South or North/South East combination or vice versa.
Aspirants in the race to pick the APC presidential ticket include Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo; APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; former Minister of Transportation, Hon Chibuike Amaechi; Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi and ex-Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.
Other aspirants are former Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajuba; ex-Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio; former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha; former governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun and Ekiti State governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.
Pastor Tunde Bakare; Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello; business mogul, Chief Tein Jack-Rich are also presidential aspirants in APC. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/2023-presidency-apc-shifts-screening-as-buhari-meets-govs-nass-caucus-aspirants/

Politics › Road To 2023: Our Party Not A Second Option For Corrupt Politicians - SDP by Kwanza(op): 7:18pm On May 21, 2022 |
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has declared that its platform is not a second option for corrupt politicians who were desperate to realise their political ambition at all costs.
The acting National Chairman of SDP, Chief Supo Shonibare, stated after the successful conduct of the party congress in the Lagos State chapter. Shonibare said the party’s door is open to aggrieved politicians who fail to clinch their party’s ticket for any political office but to get SDP’s ticket, the politicians must be ready to submit themselves to stringent conditions, including an integrity test.
On rumour of former Lagos State Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant, Bola Tinubu, planning to use the party as a second option if, he fails to clinch his party’s ticket, he said: “Yes, we will welcome anyone who feels cheated by other political parties but must be consistent with integrity.
“If he (Tinubu) comes, it won’t be automatic, what we would emphasise is consistency with integrity within the public officer.
