Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom state, is set to dump the Peoples Democratic Party and dampen the celebration mood in the PDP headquarters, over the defection of some senators and three governors from the All Progressives Congress.

APC Newspaper on its Twitter handle announced Saturday night: “We can confirm that, HE, Sen (Dr) Godswill Akpabio is a card carrying member of @OfficialAPCNg effective August 4, 2018. @OfficialPDPNig has lost him. Official Reception in days”.

And APC United Kingdom in another tweet set the date for the defection: “Acting President, @ProfOsinbajo accompanied by Senator (Dr ) Ita Enang, and leaders of the APC in Akwa Ibom to formally receive Senator (Dr.) Godswill Akpabio into APC at Ikot Ekpene Stadium on Thursday 9 August, 2018.

An Osun state based social-political group, the Renewal Youth Movement (RYM) has called on the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke to immediately withdraw from the 2018 Osun governorship race following his involvement in the ongoing certificate scandal.

“Adeleke’s certificate mess has shot the PDP in the leg and has put the party in a very tight and difficult situation. Our group is of the firm opinion that the PDP has lost the election before the contest and even if the party wins, such victory will definitely be short-lived as co-contestants from other political parties by now must have prepared grounds for the Tribunal”, the group stated.

The Federal Government says the All Progressives Congress (APC) reserves the right to challenge defectors in court.Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, said this on Saturday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise.

The Minister when asked about the party’s next step for the defected APC members to vacate their seats, said: “I still believe that the party (APC) reserves the legal right to actually challenge any of them and ask for their seats to be declared vacant.”His comments come after the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and some lawmakers and three state governors left the ruling party for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The minister believes that the defections were planned following the emergence of the Reformed-All Progressives Congress (R-APC).“All you have seen from the beginning – R-APC, Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) were laying the foundation for the defection,” he added.The minister also accused the leadership of the National Assembly (NASS) of frustrating efforts to ensure unity within the party.

According to him, the emergence of principal officers of NASS was against the wishes of the party as the election in 2015 happened when most APC lawmakers were having a meeting with the President.He added, “The leadership of the National Assembly destroyed party cohesion the moment they chose to go against the wishes of the party in the election of NASS principal officers.

“It is no longer a secret that the manner at which the Senate President emerged was not to the liking of the part as a whole.
“I still remember clearly that the major leaders of the party were waiting to meet at the National Conference Center in Abuja for Mr President when we heard that the Senate President had emerged.”

Lai Mohammed, however, decried that the necessary working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government was getting affected by what he described as the “lack of discipline within the NASS leadership”.

The former Security Adviser to ex-Gov. Timipre Sylva, had been accused of raping and detaining one Teke Blessing on June 20, at his hostel. However after he was remanded in Prison custody till Aug. 10 for ruling on his bail application, he arrived court, yesterday, on a stretcher.
After he was spotted in the ambulance, the Judge ordered the prison officials to return him to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa where he had been receiving treatment.
Though the case continued later in his absence and he was denied bail. Justice E. Eradiri, said that the bail application, based on medical grounds, did not indicate that the accused was not getting adequate medical attention from prison. Justice Eradiri also added that denied the accused bail based on the nature of the charge which, on conviction, attracts life imprisonment. He then adjourned the case to Sept. 21, for commencement of trial

Aminu tambuwal governor of Sokoto state, says the the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will resist any illegal move to impeach Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Following Saraki’s defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP, some lawmakers and APC chieftains have asked him to step down.

On Wednesday, Adams Oshiomhole, APC national chairman, said it is “a matter of honour” for Saraki to “leave the crown (senate presidency) in the house that the crown belongs to.”

The PDP caucus in the house of representatives subsequently raised an alarm that some senators were plotting to impeach Saraki through the backdoor.

But speaking at the PDP national executive council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Tambuwal, who just recently left the APC as well, said any attempt to impeach Saraki unconstitutionally will harm Nigeria’s democracy.

“When I hear that some people are trying to break into the chambers of the senate to steal the mace and install a pseudo president of the senate, I wonder whether they actually know the rules of our democratic engagement. It’s not a Gestapo, we are in democracy,” he said.

“If the senators have confidence in Bukola Saraki, they should continue to sustain him as president of the senate. And so be it with Mr. Speaker, Dogara.

“So, nobody should be afraid. There is a process. And we must respect due process and rule of law. And Nigeria is not a banana republic. We will not take it from anybody. Let them hear it very clear. If you try it, we will match out our forces in this country and jam you.

“Because we are talking about democracy. We cannot afford to allow anybody, no matter how highly placed, to toy with the future of about 200 million people in this country.”

He also said if Saraki decided change his political party, there is nothing anybody can do about it.

“The constitution of this country is very clear that members of the senate and the house of representatives can choose from among themselves their own president of the senate or speaker without leaning to any political party,” Tambuwal said.

The Federal Executive Council, FEC, on Wednesday approved N72.9billion for the reconstruction of the road from Apapa to the toll gate on Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Lagos State.

Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, made this known to Statehouse Correspondents in Abuja after the weekly cabinet meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Fashola said the decision was taken to provide a long-term solution to the road, which had suffered a lot of gridlock in recent times.

“The Ministry of Power, Works and Housing secured approval for the reconstruction of the Creek Road Tincan Island-Beach Land right through to Oworoshoki to the toll gate end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway for the full reconstruction of that road which was built around 1975 as part of our first port expansion undertaken then in the 70s.

That road was intended to evacuate cargo out of Lagos without running through the spine of the city.

“The road is now in some state of disrepair and Council has approved its reconstruction at the cost of N72.9 billion,” he said.

According to the minister, the work will be done using a Public-Private Partnership PPP model.

He named Dangote Group as the constructing firm for the road project, saying that the N72.9 billion for the execution of the project would be recovered through the funding credit tax policy of the government.

The minister further said when fully constructed, the road will have 10 lanes, with five on both sides, with a total of 270.8 linear kilometers, including drainage, rehabilitation of some of the bridges and interchanges.

“First, it will be done through the PPP model. The constructing company will be the Dangote group. It will be financing that construction to the tune of N72.9 billion as certified by PPP.

“Another instructive thing to note is that this is the first full reconstruction of that road since it was constructed at about 1975.

“All previous efforts had been to repair damaged sections. So, it is going all the way to reconstruct the road.

“The third thing to note is that the entire construction is that it involves procurement of 27.8 kilometers made up of 10 lanes – five lanes on both sides – three on the main carriageway, two on service lanes.

“So, essentially, you are constructing about 79.8 linear kilometers and that also includes drainage and use of extensive cement work and rehabilitation of bridges.
“We expect contractors to move to the site. This is our own long-term solution to the problem contributed by the road congestion there.

“This will provide an enduring solution to what is currently being experienced by commuters,” he added.

The Bishop stated that the abductors have established contact with some members of the Church, adding that they have brought down the ransom from N50M to N8m, and threatening they ‘await the worst’ if their demand is not met before 1pm Thursday.
He noted that the DSS and the Army have swung into action to track down the perpetrators.
He lamented that abduction is mostly targeted at the poor, stressing that by now the insecurity of lives and property should have improved but is rather getting worse by the day.
He called on the government to quickly address the ugly situation.

Bayern Munich defender David Alaba will face a late fitness before the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena.
Alaba sat out Bayern's final training session on Tuesday with a thigh strain, but coach Jupp Heynckes says a decision will be made early on Wednesday as to whether he will be in the squad.
Midfielder Corentin Tolisso is also a doubt while Brazilian defender Rafinha is likely to replace Alaba if he fails to make the squad.
On-loan Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez could start after being used as a substitute in the 3-0 victory over Hannover on Saturday.
Madrid have no fresh injury concerns.

Bayern Munich coach Heynckes helped re-establish Real Madrid's reputation as kings of Europe by winning the Champions League in 1998 after a 32-year drought.
But his memories were not fond ones as he was sacked eight days later when his side finished fourth in the league during his single season in charge.
Now Heynckes' former club stand in the way of his bid to become only the third coach alongside Carlo Ancelotti and Bob Paisley to win Europe's biggest prize three times.
Bayern, who have already won the Budesliga title and the German Cup, are hoping to complete the treble in Heynckes' fourth spell in charge.
But this time Bayern are the underdogs as 12-time champions Real Madrid are looking to win their third successive Champions League trophy under Zinedine Zidane.
"You have to look back to last October," said Heynckes. "We did not think we were going to be champions with five games to spare and to be semi-finalists (in Europe)."
"These are two teams with a great tradition in European football, who play and love attractive football.
"It's a difficult draw for both sides," he added.

Captain of the Super Eagles, John Mikel Obi, has assured Nigerian football fans that the three-time African champions will be at their best for the prestige international friendly match against the Three Lions of England, on June 2, 2018 at the Wembley Stadium.
Speaking to NFF official website yesterday, the midfield enforcer, who celebrated his 31st birthday on Sunday, said there will be no option for Eagles other than to give their best with the FIFA World Cup right by the door on that day.

A man in the UK who caught the world's "worst-ever" case of super-gonorrhoea has been cured.
Sexual health doctors say he was "very lucky" and the case was a "major wake-up call for everybody".
He picked up the superbug having sex with a woman in South East Asia, despite having a British partner.
It was the first-ever case of the infection being incurable with first choice antibiotics, but now two similar cases have been reported in Australia.

The original case came to light last month and was linked to travel earlier in the year.

The main antibiotic treatment - a combination of azithromycin and ceftriaxone - failed to treat the disease.
A detailed analysis of his infection suggested one last antibiotic might work and he has since been treated with ertapenem.
Dr Gwenda Hughes, the head of sexually-transmitted infections at Public Health England, said: "We are pleased to report that the case of multi-drug resistant gonorrhoea has been successfully treated."
The public health body launched an investigation to track down any further cases - including in his British partner - but says the superbug has not spread in the UK.
Discussions between Public Health England, the World Health Organization and the European Centres for Disease Control agreed this was the most serious case of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea ever detected.
But now two "similar" cases have been discovered in Australia. One also had sex in South East Asia, the other reported no foreign travel.
Dr Hughes said they will be "challenging" to treat and were a "timely reminder" to everyone that super-gonorrhoea is likely to be more common in the future.

Olivier Giroud's brilliant semi-final goal helped Chelsea beat Southampton to reach the FA Cup final and set up a meeting with Manchester United.
Chelsea striker Giroud received the ball from Eden Hazard and jinked his way past two Southampton players in a crowded area before he stabbed the ball home.
Giroud was replaced by Alvaro Morata with 10 minutes to go and the substitute sealed safe passage with Chelsea's second when he headed in at the back post from Cesar Azpilicueta's cross.
Southampton went close with Nathan Redmond's low drive from distance while Charlie Austin hit the post.
It means Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will come up against managerial adversary Jose Mourinho at Wembley on 19 May.
There is no love lost between Conte and former Chelsea manager Mourinho, who have traded insults throughout the season.
The final is also repeat of 2007 when Mourinho guided Chelsea to a 1-0 victory over United in the first to be played at the rebuilt Wembley.
