After due deliberation, The federal government in conjunction with all stake holders on education yesterday, Monday February 2 in a meeting concluded that academic activities during the general election scheduled to hold this month.

The minister of education, Mr Ibrahim Shekarau who presided over the meeting which was held in his office in Abuja said that nobody should anticipate violence or crisis during the election as elections had been held in the past in this country while schools and institutions where in session.

He also noted that the federal ministry of education and management of NUC, NBTE, NCCE and all other stake holders in education after due consultations and deliberations in respect of whether or not schools and all institutions should remain in session for the period of the election have been resolved as follows:

“That all schools and institutions should remain in session while elections take place over the weekend as stipulated by the INEC timetable. It is our belief that we have had elections in the past when schools were in session and in view of the fact that we are just almost halfway of the second term of the school Calendar, it is not right to close down the school now.

Again we have suffered a lot in our schools during the Ebola last crisis and many schools are battling to catch up with the lost period and there is no reason before us that compels us to decide otherwise in closing the schools.

We also agreed that all schools that are used to having mid-term breaks and have not gone on that mid-term break should put it on hold. All mid-term breaks in all schools should be suspended for this time; those on mid-term break already should resume back to school immediately and continue with their lessons.

Also in schools where we have polling stations particularly in boarding schools whose premises are being used as polling units, we have decided to call upon the state governments and ministries of education to ensure adequate security”.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has explained why Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos state, and Alhaji Mohammed Sa’ad, the Sultan of Sokoto were unable to collect their PVCs.

The INEC Deputy Director in charge of Voters Education and Publicity, Nick Dazang, gave the explanation at a one-day workshop for newsmen in Kaduna.

Dazang explained that the commission encountered the problem of loss of data which was caused by some INEC staff. He said, “the initial lost of data led to loss of finger prints and that was why the Sultan of Sokoto, Governor Fashola of Lagos and others could not get their PVCs. Attitude of some INEC staff led to loss of the data.”

He, however, stated that despite the challenge encountered by INEC, the commission has achieved 65 percent distribution of PVCs nationwide and expressed optimism that the percentage of PVC distribution would increase substantially before the election.
