This is a lot but they're all essential rules to maintain good hygiene and etiquette. Kudos to your people for this wonderful upbringing

If no be you cook, you have NO RIGHT to go dish food o... You must take permission from mummy or ask the person wey cook to dish food for you. If mummy is tired, you'll hear "Go and tell XYZ (the person that cooked) to out food for you na"... Even if na plantain/fish/meat/akara them dey fry, you no fit take those tiny pieces without asking permission from the person/those in the kitchen... You want to do tasting? Better join them in the kitchen for the cooking.

Funny enough, at this age, we all still abide by the first rule even when we visit ourselves or go home for holiday

Well, it's normal to still abide by the rules because it's something you lived with for years. It would be more like a habit now

It still amazes me how my father hand was able to land me a knock from the far end of the dinning table just because I took a bite of my meat when I have not finished my eba.

I really want to know why people get angry when the left hand is used. I was chastised severally as a child because of it.

Keeping mute or quiet while chewing food was a rule that never needed to be spoken out loud in my home growing up.

I'm still constantly amazed that even grown ass people with more than a basic education still need to be reminded of such a basic dining etiquette.

It's practically common sense... Not to mention reducing choking hazards.

Honestly, some people just throw caution to the wind when they no longer have someone keeping them in check. It's very bad

I always have a carton of noodles and pack of eggs at home for such moment. I don't have to go to buy them.

That's cool. Keeping foodstuffs really helps when you're short on money.
Also, noodles and eggs can be helpful when you're very hungry and need to fix something quickly

1, You do not talk while you are eating. I still preserve the culture in my house 40 years after.
2, whenever swallow or any food that requires washing of hands, water for washing hand must either come first or together with the food NOT after the food is served.

This second rule is unique. It's the first time I'm hearing it. Please is there a special reason why it has to be this way? I'd love to know

We had this rule too and I used to see it as punishment because I love food so much but now I understand why they made the rule

Wow this is a lot but It's all for the best. You most likely used to think that they were stressful but I'm sure you now understand why your parents made these rules

Aaaah ..... Every school day morning , our breakfast was Tea and bread.

Every Tuesday night to Friday night was soup and Garri/fufu.

Sat was anything my mom felt like to cook

Sun was rice!!

I can relate to the bread and tea breakfast. Because of that, I can't stand it anymore as an adult

Your meat/fish or any protein available is your trophy. You only eat it after you must have done justice to the food. Funnily enough, even at 40 something years old now, I still maintain that rule together with my siblings. Chai. This life na wa o. Another is “no talking while eating”. If you do that, you go collect immediately from Old boy. The last one is that sometimes we all eat together in a tray to maintain family/sibling bond. Na when mumsi notice say lion sibling Dey wey get cooler and refrigerator for mouth when she serve hot food she change that rule come Dey give us our own portions . lol. My sisters prefer eating together when it is for food they don’t like so that my mum won’t be able to know how much they have eaten.

Wow this is beautiful. Funnily enough it's usually these little things that strengthen the bond in families. I don't know about other people but most of my core childhood memories are related to food. People underestimate the power food has in forming our most memorable moments.

There is a meal you have. Everyone has one.

The one you fall back on when the account is looking scary and payday is still somehow two weeks away.

It is not glamorous. It might be embarrassing to admit in public. But it has saved you more times than you can count and you have a complicated respect for it.

For some people it is Indomie with one egg, prepared with the seriousness of a five star chef.

For others it is garri and groundnut, eaten slowly to make it last.

Some people swear by a plate of rice and stew from the cheapest buka on the street, the one that never disappoints.

Whatever it is, it carried you. And you know it.
