How could a woman like Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was suspended for raising valid concerns about misconduct, manage to attend an international meeting without the proper clearance? The fact that she was even able to address the IPU at all shows there’s a serious failure on the part of Nigeria’s leadership to manage basic internal processes.

Where was this investigation when accusations of sexual harassment against the Senate President surfaced? No investigation into those claims, but now the government is scrambling because a woman—who’s already facing political persecution—seated herself at an international forum to raise her concerns. This stinks of political games, not genuine national interest. The government needs to focus on the real issues—not harass those who dare speak out, especially when their rights have been violated.

If the Senate and intelligence agencies spent less time worrying about trivial matters and more time dealing with the real abuses happening under their watch, we might actually make some progress.
