Foreign AffairsGuiness Records: World's Most Fraudulent Presidential Election (pictures) by LoopyNigeria(op): 5:47pm On Jan 28, 2025
It happened in 1927 in Liberia,The election was between incumbent President Charles D.B. King(True Whig Party) and challenger Thomas J. Faulkner of the People's Party. On paper, King secured 234,000 votes compared to Faulkner’s 9,000 votes.

Sounds like a decisive win, right? Except... there was a small problem:

There were only about 15,000 registered voters in the entire country at the time grin grin

How Did They Pull It Off?
- Ballot Stuffing: Election officials openly stuffed ballot boxes with fake votes for King.
- Voter Coercion:Voters were intimidated and forced to cast ballots for King, with some reports of ballots being cast by deceased people.
- Phantom Voters: Entire villages that did not participate in the election somehow "voted" for King.

The Aftermath:
- The fraud was so blatant that it sparked international outrage.
- Faulkner, the opposition leader, presented evidence to the League of Nations accusing King’s government of corruption and forced labor practices akin to slavery.
- An investigation confirmed the allegations, leading to Charles D.B. King resigning in 1930, though only after intense pressure.

Self-development books: I've been trained on excerpts and summaries of popular self-help books, such as "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey, "Daring Greatly" by Brené Brown, and "Mindset" by Carol S. Dweck.

While I haven't "read" books in the traditional sense, I've been trained on a massive amount of text data, which enables me to provide information, answer questions, and engage in conversations on a wide range of topics! The phrase "readers are leaders" suggests that people who regularly read and acquire knowledge are more likely to become leaders in their respective fields or communities.

Reasons why readers are leaders
1. Knowledge acquisition: Reading provides access to vast amounts of information, helping readers stay up-to-date with the latest developments in their field.
2. Critical thinking and analysis: Reading encourages critical thinking, analysis, and evaluation of information, which are essential skills for leaders.
3. Improved communication skills: Reading exposes individuals to different writing styles, vocabulary, and communication techniques, helping them become more effective communicators.
4. Empathy and understanding: Through reading, leaders can gain a deeper understanding of different perspectives, cultures, and experiences, fostering empathy and informed decision-making.
5. Personal growth and development: Reading can inspire personal growth, self-reflection, and self-improvement, all of which are essential for effective leadership.

Types of reading materials for leaders
1. Non-fiction books: Self-help, memoirs, biographies, and books on leadership, management, and industry-specific topics.
2. Articles and research papers: Stay current with the latest research, trends, and innovations in your field.
3. News and current events: Stay informed about local and global news, economics, politics, and social issues.
4. Industry publications and blogs: Follow industry leaders, experts, and thought leaders to stay up-to-date with the latest developments.

By adopting a reading habit, you'll be well on your way to becoming a more informed, empathetic, and effective leader.

RomanceJealous Woman Stabs Boyfriend After He Greets Another Woman On The Street by LoopyNigeria(op): 3:52pm On Dec 04, 2024
A little jealousy can actually be good for a relationship, but too much of it can be fatal! Take the tragic story of Mariano Grinspun, a 23-year-old man from González Catán, a city in Argentina’s Buenos Aires province, who was stabbed to death by his jealous girlfriend after greeting a former schoolmate on the street. The shocking incident occurred in the early hours of October 21st, near the corner of Balboa and La Bastilla streets, in González Catán. Grinspun and his girlfriend, Natacha Palavecino, were walking hand in hand when they ran into a woman who greeted Mariano and asked him how he was doing. The woman’s simple greeting was enough to drive the man’s girlfriend crazy, as she pulled out a hidden knife and attacked her.

It turns out that the woman who greeted Mariano Grinspun on that fateful morning was an old schoolmate of his, but that hardly mattered to his girlfriend. She just saw another woman who had the nerve to speak to her man and decided that she needed to pay with her life. Palavecino reached for a hidden knife and slashed the woman, identified only as LC by Argentinian media, across the armpit. The victim fell to the ground and managed to stop another stab attempt with her hand. She would have probably been killed if not for an unidentified man who managed to pull Palavecino off of her.

Unfortunately, Mariano Grinspun was not so lucky. After failing to kill the woman who had sparked her rage, Natacha Palavecino took it out on her boyfriend, stabbing him in the chest. The couple argued for several minutes after, as shown by surveillance cameras in the area, during which time the victim collapsed to the ground several times. At one point, he fails to get up and his 32-year-old girlfriend attacks him with her bare hands. Eyewitnesses called emergency services, but they could do nothing to save the man’s life.

An ongoing investigation has already revealed Natacha Palavecino’s violent history. In 2021, she was convicted to one year in prison for stabbing a former boyfriend in the chest, and even Mariano himself had reported her to the police for threats and causing him physical injuries. In July of last year, a restraining order was issued, forcing Natacha to avoid all contact with the victim. However, once the measure expired, he decided to give their relationship another chance.

32-year-old Palavecino risks spending many years in prison for the murder of her boyfriend and the attempted murder of the woman who simply greeted him on the street.

PoliticsMost Lagosians Earn Less Than ₦100,000 Monthly, Paidhr Survey Shows by LoopyNigeria(op): 1:30pm On Oct 24, 2024
Lagos, Nigeria’s economic powerhouse, is a city of contrasts. While the big buildings in its business districts signify wealth and ambition, its residents’ salaries tell a different story. If you earn more than ₦200,000 monthly, you’re an outlier in Nigeria’s commercial capital. Most people who work in Lagos (78%) earn less than ₦100,000.

These data points are from the State of the Employed report by PaidHR, a Nigerian startup that helps businesses manage their HR functions. The company spoke to over 1,600 employees—half of whom are 19 to 35—and employers in Lagos.

“[The report] helps us understand the plight of people who earn salaries, spotlighting how they earn it, where they earn it, and what their earnings enable them to do,” said Seye Bandele, PaidHR CEO.

As Nigeria’s cost-of-living crisis deepens, half of working Lagosians spend more than they earn monthly. They resort to second income streams to supplement those earnings.

These workers (51.2%) have no income left after covering necessities like food, transport, rent, and utility payments. Food is the most significant of those bills, with workers spending ₦54,000 on food monthly—that number used to be ₦38,000 in 2023. Transport costs also jumped from ₦16,000 monthly in 2023 to ₦22,000 in 2024.

Only a few people (30%) have budgets for recreation, and saving is a similar luxury.

For those who do manage to save, the primary motivation is rent. Overall, men tend to save more than women, particularly married men. However, single women save more than single men.

While credit solutions are crucial for navigating economic hardships, the report reveals a significant gap in access. 70% of Lagos workers lack employer-backed loans or credit facilities. This presents an opportunity for digital lenders to develop credit solutions tailored to these specific needs.

The nation’s economic woes have also affected the productivity of these workers. 55% of workers surveyed said the country’s economy has affected their productivity at work. While financial strain is a key factor, a surprising 58% of respondents blamed their mental health and lack of employer support for poor performance at work.

Foreign AffairsItaly Bans Gay Couples From Becoming Parents by LoopyNigeria(op): 7:46pm On Oct 17, 2024
Italy bans couples from travelling abroad for surrogacy

Italy has made it illegal for couples to go abroad to have a baby through surrogacy.

The move extends a ban on the practice inside the country to also include those who seek it out in places where it is legal, like the US or Canada. Those who break the law could face up to two years in prison and fines of up to €1m (£835,710).

The law, proposed by the Italy's far-right governing party, is seen by critics to target LGBT couples - who are not allowed to adopt or use IVF in the country.

Surrogacy is when a woman carries a pregnancy for another couple or individual, usually due to fertility issues or because they are men in a same-sex relationship.

CrimeA Woman Becomes A Police To Catch Her Father’s Killer, Arrest Him After 25 Years by LoopyNigeria(op): 9:14am On Oct 14, 2024
A Brazilian woman who dedicated her life to catching her father; ‘s killer managed to finally bring her family peace by catching the runaway criminal to justice 25 years after the murder.

On February 16, 1999, Givaldo José Vicente de Deus was shot and killed after a heated argument at a bar in the Brazilian city of Boa Vista. He had gotten into an argument with one Raimundo Alves Gomes over a debt of 150 Brazilian reals (the equivalent of $29 in 1999) that Givaldo reportedly owed Gomes. At one point, the latter walked out of the bar for a few minutes, then came back in with a gun and shot the father-of-five in the head at point-blank range.

Gomes fled the scene and although an arrest warrant was issued in his name, he was never caught. Givaldo’s grieving family never gave up hope of bringing his killer to justice, and his eldest daughter, who was only nine at the time of his death, dedicated her life to catching Gomes.

Gomes] left behind a broken family, with five children, and our mothers had to fight hard to raise us. This event could have led us down other paths, but our mothers always taught us to follow the right path,” Gislayne Silva de Deus told Brazilian news outlet Nova1.

As the eldest of five children, Gislayne had to help her mother take care of her younger siblings and also do chores around the house, but she never neglected her studies. Her father had always encouraged her to study hard and was always ready to help her with her homework, and she didn’t want to disappoint him. She put in the work and dreamed of one day bringing closure to her entire family by catching her father’s killer.

At age 18, after graduating high school, Gislayne was accepted into law school and became a licensed lawyer seven years later. However, in 2022, she gave up on her law career in order to become a police officer, and two years later, on July 19, 2024, she passed the exam and was officially appointed as a State Police investigator. She immediately requested a position in the Homicide Division, which gave her an opportunity to pursue Raimundo Alves Gomes.

In 2013, Gomes was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the killing of Givaldo José Vicente de Deus, but since he had never been apprehended after the crime, the sentence was never carried out. His lawyers appealed the decision in 2014 and 2015, but both appeals were rejected by the High Court of Justice. The most recent arrest warrant for Gomez was issued in 2019, so the statute of limitations runs out in 2031, meaning that the faster Gislayne could find Gomes, the more time he would have to spend behind bars.

On September 25, just two months into her career as a police officer, Gislayne Silva de Deus fulfilled her dream of bringing her father’s killer to justice, after a long 25 years. She and her team found him hiding on a farm in the Nova Cidade region near Boa Vista and arrested him.

“When I saw him at the police station, I made a point of telling him who I was and that I had been responsible for carrying out the arrest warrant,” Silva de Deus said. “I shared the news with my family, and everyone felt a great sense of peace and justice. We waited a long time, and even though we were in disbelief, we managed to reach this moment. I cried with relief because after so long, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.”

Gislayne’s story and her dedication to honoring her father and bringing her family peace touched the hearts of millions in Brazil and the whole of South America since the news was first reported last month.

PoliticsShould Nigeria Do The Same As Brazil? (photos) by LoopyNigeria(op):
Brazilian authorities on Friday began closing down more than 2,000 betting sites, including those that sponsors popular football team Corinthians and other first division clubs, as part of a push to regulate online gambling.

Latin America's biggest economy is struggling with what Finance Minister Fernando Haddad has called a betting "pandemic," prompting the government to tighten the screws on the sector.

Since 2018, when Brazil legalized sports betting sites, online gambling has operated in a regulatory free-for-all, subject to virtually no rules or taxes.

Some of the most popular sites take bets on sporting fixtures, but Brazilians have also become hooked on gambling games like Aviator, where players gamble on the flight of a virtual airplane, or the online casino game Fortune Tiger.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's government has called time on sites that failed to sign up to new regulations due to take effect in January.

The new rules seek to combat fraud and money laundering and protect users, by for example banning minors from betting.

"Anyone who is not regularized, or in the process of being regularized, is being taken off the air," Haddad said in a statement.

The finance ministry said it had identified 2,040 "suspicious domains" which it had asked the telecoms regulatory agency Anatel to block.

On the blacklist is Esportes da Sorte, which sponsors Corinthians, one of Brazil's most popular football clubs, as well as Athletico Paranaense, Bahia and Gremio de Porto Alegre.

The ministry said the betting sites would be blocked and banned from advertising, "which includes, for example, sponsoring football clubs."

More than 200 other sites will be allowed to continue to operate after agreeing to the new rules.

Brazil's central bank estimates that 24 million out of Brazil's 212 million inhabitants, roughly one in nine people, gamble online.

Lula warned recently that betting was causing many low-income Brazilians to get into debt.
