The last direct violence against Christians was in 2007, when the very last Christian book store in the entire Gaza strip was fire bombed, and destroyed. The elderly couple who owned the store, were captured and executed.

Our community does face issues including discrimination, lack of employment for the skilled jobs we are concentrated in, and some legal problems, but there is also a feeling of community with the wider Palestinian population. Our fates are tied together, and we know that.

As for Gaza, the situation is a lot worse. The Strip is run by an Islamist government, Hamas, that excludes them from wider life in the community intentionally and unintentionally. Hamas ties the whole Palestinian identity to Islam, and that makes Christians feel exclusion. There has also been some violence against Christian owned shops, and we feel excluded. To us, it’s not right to systematically privilege one religious group over another. Hamas almost instituted mandatory hijab for everyone in the Strip, and my family was ashamed that they might be forced to wear a garment that goes completely against their religion that has been in the Strip centuries before Islam even arrived. It’s unfair, and Hamas doesn’t care.
