Move to sell the nation's foremost telecommunications outfit, NITEL at a give away price to satisfy some powerful clique mounting pressure on government has been uncovered. An ex-military head of state, who is bent on acquiring NITEL for less than $500 million against its assets valued at over $1.3 to $2 billion by different investment evaluation companies, has been fingered in the plot. According to an impeccable source the former head of state is bidding for the troubled telecoms outfit through two of the companies that have signaled interest in acquiring it. Companies bidding for NITEL include Globacom Limited, MTN Nigeria, Anas network, Brymedia (WA), Metro PCS Communications, Finetek.com/Erickson, MTNL from India, Galaxy Backbone, Etisalat Nigeria, Telefonia Consortium and Omen International Limited, and all have committed themselves with non-refundable application fees of $25,000 each to the Bureau for Public Enterprise (BPE).
