I have been thinking about this for a long time.

If you didn’t then it could be a shitty coy or worst case a marketing firm like you guessed right.

I remember when I was invited to interview a year ago. I spent 3 hours in traffic, had to walk a distance in heels due to parking issues, climbed the stairs in heels because I couldn’t wait for the elevator. Interview went fantastically even though I was out of breathe and got a good nod from the MD.

I waited for weeks and did not hear from the company. One fine Tuesday, I got a call out of the blues asking if I could make it down to their office on Thursday. I had plans lined up but I decided to make that sacrifice and go with it. Cancelled plans, moved my timetable around and on Wednesday evening, HR calls me to say their “chairman” was out of town and Thursday wouldn’t hold so let’s do Friday instead.

At this point, I felt very belittled and saw the first red flag about the organization. I apologized and informed them that Friday was not convenient and maybe we could have the meeting virtually or set up physically for a further date. HR said they’ll get back to me.

Thursday around noon, while I’m at my home desk eating crackers and typing emails, I get a call from HR asking if I could come down to their office that their chairman had a change of flight plans. At this point, I had given up. I asked HR straight up what the budget for the role was. She was stunned and tried to go around it with all that we will let you know when you meet with the chairman. I told her bluntly what I was currently earning and if they could guarantee a 25 percent increase on that sum and give me a 6 week resumption period. I explained to her that their initial delay had messed up my calendar and as an employee, I didn’t have the luxury of taking days and time off if it wouldn’t be worth it in the long run.

To cut it short, she had to come clean and state what the role budget was. I thanked her, her chairman by extension and causally told her to try the next candidate. To keep good relations, I sent a formal email and wished them well.

The problem with Nigerian entities is that they take advantage of the teeming unemployed population and offer the barest minimum. I worked hard to get good grades, spent money on education, almost damaged my eyes in the process, deprived myself of so much and you want to toss me left and right and still offer peanuts because there’s a Nigerian and even Indian out there so desperate they’d take anything.

I’m in no means being uppity but Nigerian employers are taking advantage of the poverty, unemployment and desperation. This is why we have so many Nigerians seeking employment in different countries. I know my worth and I know a lot of these entities can do better. Unfortunately they won’t because there’s literally 10,000 Nigerians waiting to take up that offer you rejected. F**k the system.

Now this is someone who understands her worth.

You did well by not letting them toss you here and there. Those who know the value you bring will surely locate you someday.

I will not mind all these small minds making a jock of my post and calling me all sorts of unprintable names to get likes and sorts.

My God.

So much negativity on my harmless post.

If anyone knows me, bragging can’t be associated with me. I know how empty life is and uncertain the breath we take can be so I don’t take life too seriously at all.

My main reason for making this post is to show my displeasure with the underpayment of Nigerians and it is not acceptable by all means. The marine industry is a very expensive industry and the certifications do not come cheap so the remuneration should equate that but in Nigeria, it is not so.

How I wish we all know our worth and class so we negotiate better in life.

I know things are hard in naija and people are barely surviving. I pray we all get sorted someday and somehow.

I have my sea time of over 34 months. I had to go back to school so I’m done with that. I will get my chiefs next year. That’s my target for 2022.

Taking that FPSO job it's cool even though the pay is very poor, but at least it will boost your CV and give you more time with your family

Or try and get a Motor CoC and get a job in our coastal water, at least with DPVM you get to be paid 1.3 million per month

I used to but I moved and I want to keep moving. I have a motor time on the DFDEs but not the ticket yet cos I had to go back to school. Now I am looking for land based jobs or something close to home for family sake.

Imagine you want to know how much the pay of someone in your industry, with your experience, in Nigeria and all those stuff - This post just partly answers it.

To get this kind of vital info I need to start searching foreign blogs like monster.com, indeed, glassdoor etc. But here we have it and all you guys say is - so what?

So a friend sent me a job advert on LinkedIn of a firm looking for a Steam experienced 3rd marine engineer to work on an FPSO in Nigeria.

I sent out my CV to the firm and they got back to me 4 days later asking me to look at the pay scale and reaffirm if they should proceed with the process.

Looking at the pay scale, it was way below what I was expecting and I had to reject it with the below message.

I will be willing to discuss further if the pay is in dollars and monthly take home is above $3500.

NB:

I am UK schooled with all the necessary certifications and very well experienced in my field with double digit years (12 years) experience.

Op ur story sounds like mine, Dad was a militaty personnel, He had tested positive to HIV for over 6 years without any of us knowing and till date, i'm d only one dat knew (few days b4 he died). He was on his medication during this times so i guess that's what boost his immune system and for just dis act i wont judge him. My mum had her last child and both seems healthy with no sign of been positive (she is like 13yrs now).

Yours did the needful. Mine didn't take ARV and I'm sure he didn't believe it or I don't even know sef. Alot of military men have aids.
