This is yet another proof of that.

What i find really hard to understand though is why they have to wait til that critical point of their lives before realizing themselves, because not many get the chance to make amends.

This is one of the few lucky atheists that did.

Thank God he realized himself and repented before it was too late.

I hope other atheists get to learn something from his story.

It may take some civil servants 100 years to afford a hajj slot. The assumption for elective offices is that majority of the people are making the best choice. I cant fault an SSCE holder finding himself in HoR or Senate.
The comparison is a lil bit off. How many professors have truly advanced the body of knowledge they are suppose to? Ask them to look inwards for extra revenue and you start hearing about pure water and bread factories as ideas.
The comparison is apt. It shows the widening and pulsatingly gaping inequality between the lawmakers and the citizenry even those who ought be a bit better than the average. As for the ideas, I laugh when people expect inventions and ideas from the educational sector in Nigeria. Great ideas do not come out of empty stomachs. People who think these ideas and invent these extraordinary feats do so because while the majority of us were looking for food and toiling, they were well fed and had the leisure to think. You cannot think on an empty pocket

I was stranded in New York and coughed out $455 for for a night and few hours. I was supposed to fly the next evening and delayed about an hour after checkout. I thought they pardoned me after I apologized to the wait staff. Immediately I stepped out of the building they charged my card. After I begged and pleaded, they still charged me a full night. I was so disappointed.

We’ve always heard from Ibo people that they want another country. Shouldn’t they be happy that someone is helping them fulfil their ambition by telling them to leave the SW?

Only Lagospedia spoke and south east leader had to go beg Atiku to help them beg the SW governor. Their senators, ohaneze, and now house of rep leaders are panicking and running about in fear.

What did they do when Ibo told Fulani to go the other time? Did they condemned it?

Halo22:
I have been trying to contain my disgust over the life threatening lifestyle of my landlord and his house hold, but then, it has reached the brim. I would like to make the story short cos I humbly want to seek advice on the best way to tackle this issue at hand.

I live in an environment where we are not that populated in the compound. Every person or household minds his or her business in order to maintain peace and tranquility as well as oneness as was literally advised by the landlord in his preaching of novel peace which has completely been foiled by himself in particular. He has a wife with female children who are all adults. What still baffles me is how the daughters will end up being wives in future. That would be topic for a later day.

Fast forward to early this year, I noticed a leak in the pipe that connects to their own house's toilet and quickly alerted the wife on the need to fix it so it won't deteriorate. When I saw the woman couldn't do much to fix the breakage, I organized some of my neighbours, particularly men, to talk with the husband (landlord). Lo and behold, the man apologized for the inconveniences caused and promised to fix it Asap. Two months down the line in April, we politely met him again to remind him of the dangers of the odour that oozes out of the pit, he again promised to fix it and up until now, the pipe remains unfixed and has completely gone bad, emanating irritating odour all over the compound whenever it rains, mostly my own corner of the building.

At first, I thought about parking out of the compound, but I still have about 6 months' rent running and starting afresh to look for house, the stress, extra payment and all that are not worth engaging in right away. Please what is the best step to take in this situation considering the fact that the wife is a nice and considerate person, just that the husband influences her negatively. I don't want to have issues personally with them. I humbly ask please.
Fix and when paying the rent next time, deduct the money that is if you want to continue living there, take pictures and document all receipts or simple report to lagos state sanitary and environmental services
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe VS Wole Soyinka by melow666: 10:56am On Jun 14, 2024
loffyloffy:
Comparing the two prolific Nigerian writers, Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe, is subjective as both have made significant contributions to African literature. Here are some points to consider about each writer:

Wole Soyinka:
Known for his plays, essays, and poetry.
He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986.
Soyinka's works often delve into political and social issues.
Famous works include "Death and the King's Horseman" and "A Dance of the Forests."
Chinua Achebe:
Renowned for his novels, particularly "Things Fall Apart."
Achebe is considered one of the fathers of African literature.
His writing often explores the impact of colonialism on African societies.
"Things Fall Apart" is a classic in African literature and has been translated into many languages.
Both writers have had a profound influence on African literature, and the choice between them as a better writer often comes down to personal preference based on the themes and styles of their works.

[b]Achebe authored a renowned literary work that explores the dynamics between the Igbo people and their British colonial rulers. While it was a significant contribution, it fell short of securing him the Nobel Prize.

In comparison, Achebe's other works are considered less remarkable, with limited public recall or discussion. His writings consistently center on the Igbo perspective.

On the other hand, Wole Soyinka's literary achievements were deemed worthy of the Nobel Prize. His works exhibit greater diversity, encompassing a broader range of themes and genres. Soyinka's literary output addresses a wider spectrum of life's aspects and issues, surpassing Achebe's narrower focus. Additionally, Soyinka's linguistic prowess is exceptional and comparable to the highest global standards.

Drawing an analogy to sports, it is akin to observing a team that defeated the eventual champion during the regular season but ultimately failed to secure the championship title.

The consensus within the literary community is that Wole Soyinka is the superior writer overall, while acknowledging Achebe's notable contribution with his work "Things Fall Apart."
The above is a bit lazy as it stinks of 'AI PROMPT' and you did not reference the AI used or show the prompt inputted. Here is my rebuttal,
If i were asked to choose between Achebe and Soyinka for a Nobel prize, Soyinka wins, this grasp of the English language is second to none, infact, even when he speaks, you could see him pause and search in his head for a 'big grammer' to use. Also Soyinka chunned a lot of works compared to Achebe.

Soyinka also embraced ideals which favoured him over achebe, Negritude, Political activism, philosophy etc making him the ideal recipient of the nobel prize.

Soyinka deserves to be the Nobel winner.

Achebe on the other hand would be described as a lazy writer. He authored fewer works.

Who is a better writer, Simply Achebe. His Magnum opus 'Things fall apart ' is the staple and bible of African literature, as an African, it really takes me to a world forgotten, a world chattered with the advent of the white man and his civilization. It does not pity the African characters in the prose, but relays them as human with strengths and weaknesses.
His other works 'No longer at ease' fills the reader, me including with some sort of imagination even movies fail to render, it is mystical almost as if i was there whilst the story unfolded.

As a child reading Achebe's, i would fall into a fit of laughter while reading the book that would get my parents annoyed. My mother would buy a new Achebe book and would segment his book forcing me not to devour the book in a gulp.

Note that i had experienced these writers as a young child and a young adult, with a zeal for books without biases, without ethnic affiliations, just a boy who loves books, i read ngugi wa thiongo, i specially enjoyed Mongo Beti's work and when i came to Soyinka, i just did feel it.

Achebe's books are crisp and clear, full of imaginations and parables, something you would enjoy reading. Soyinka's work is full of English, something they would force you to read in university and might give you a headache.

Soyinka deserved the Nobel prize, Achebe is far and wide a better writer than Soyinka could ever be.

Well, the prompt to this AI seems a bit biased. But in response, if I were asked who deserved to win a Nobel prize, definitely Soyinka over Achebe, Soyinka churned a lot of works while Achebe took his time, Soyinka took his prowess of the English language and pasted it on his works for the world to admire his control and confidence in the use of English and he still flaunts it even up till now, instead of speaking in clear and plain English, the Prof Soyinka would marinate his words

So your go to is chat gpt....lol

I read the books....so I know what I am talking about.....
And by the way that your chat gpt, there is a way I will craft that question and that damn machine will say Soyinka is the better author....lol grin

I gave up on you when you concluded that the Achebe is better because he out sold Soyinka according to you.....lol...pulp fiction writers like Harold Robbins,James Hadley Chase,Jackie Collins and Sidney Sheldon, have probably also sold more books than Soyinka but it doesn't make them better writers....lol..

I repeat NO student of literature in English will ever say Achebe is a better writer than Soyinka....NEVER....

Soyinka has a vast range of Prose, poetry and dramatic plays....these cover politics, society, philosophy, racism, governance, religion and the absurdity of its leaders, monarchy, colonial rule, the Nigeria/Biafra conflict, military rule and other ills that affect society. The man even has dramatic musical albums.....

This will be my final response to you on this issue.....
Well Chatgpt is a thousand times more of an authority than you can ever be, and it is without bias, the way I craft my question, craft yours and show us, also do a bit of googling on "the father of African literature" while you are at it.
It is quite astonishing that as a student of literature which you claim to be that you judge better by versatility or generalist not impact. Oh, by your analysis Soyinka is better than Shakespeare, oh Shakespeare was quite limited in scope, he was not an activist like Soyinka.

My premise is impact, whose writing is more impactful on the continent of Africa not generalist or who shunned out more work.

Also relying on your argument, so if I should suddenly shun out a lot of work in various genre then suddenly I am better than Soyinka. Achebe's work were not much and he was also limited in Genre but it was one hell of a work, quality, easy to read and even more important relate with and so impactful.

You mentioned multiple best sellers, well how impactful were their work, how may people did it inspire, did it drive attention to a cause, how well did it tell a story of a marginalized people, how well did it espouse discourse?
Better sold? That is not the main objective here, better read and more impactful. Another fallacy, pulling statements out of thin air to win, that was not the main premise of my previous argument but you are picking up the inconsequential and making it the main

Well my core argument is not how well did it sell but how well did it impact?

You also claim no student of literature would rate achebe over soyinka, well I am a student of literature and Achebes work ring home to me, something I can relate with and even faraway in America and India, people there can relate with it, check several reddit discussions on this.
Another fallacy, extrapolating your opinion as a fact for a group.

Your argument holds feather weight, it does not do the prof, soyinka any good as it is fallacious and not well thought. For me, for the internet, for chatgbt, to the numerous individual voices on nairaland, for consensus using GPTs LLM, Achebe is a better writer although Soyinka had more works.
PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe VS Wole Soyinka by melow666: 6:45pm On Jun 12, 2024

Oga,

Soyinka is heads above Achebe in literature. In subject, analysis and content....there is no debate on this among literature students on this issue except you are a tribalism......

In fact Soyinka transcends African literature because of the range of his works and the varied subject matter of his works....his work covers the absurdity of religious leaders, colonialism, racism, politics, traditional rulership, society, the aberration of military rule in Africa, the Biafra problem, and a lot more....
There is just no basis for comparison because Achebe's range of writing is too limited....
I hope you understand that we are discussing their literary works. The illusion and fallacy that when you say "Oga Soyinka is better" makes him automatically better is just wrong. Achebe sold more books, has better read books, had the most profound impact on African literature, debunked western narrative of a culture less Africa, opened the world to African literature, even asking objective AI's like chatgpt 4.o thinks Achebe was a better writer.

PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe VS Wole Soyinka by melow666: 5:16pm On Jun 12, 2024
Raf4:
That's a statement of facts.
Was Achebe father of African literature?
Basically, if you do a Google search without putting achebe or soyinkas name, and ask Google the father of African literature, Google brings up achebe and Wikipedia brings up achebe.

Soyinka is not comparable to achebe when it comes to writing. The only reason he won the Nobel prize is activism.

PoliticsRe: Chinua Achebe VS Wole Soyinka by melow666: 5:13pm On Jun 12, 2024
confusedlady:
How someone can ever compare Achebe to Soyinka beats me hollow....
In fact no proper student of literature can ever do this because Soyinka transcends all genre of literature while Achebe is grossly limited in his range.

Soyinka writes prose,poetry and drama.

Achebe is limited to prose and a few poems....

In fact while Soyinka was at the University as a lecturer, his books were being used as basis for awarding doctorate degrees to professors.

Achebe is a good prose writer but Soyimka writes prose, poetry and drama. This is a no brainer. There is just no basis for comparism.
So a generalist makes a better writer not content. I guess, if tomorrow I writes poems, prose, novellas and dramas It might be said that I am a better writer than Soyinka. We are talking about content not versatility.

I think you are getting it wrong somewhere especially in that direction you are always hammering on. Writing a book with complex English grammar is not the reason one is being given a Nobel prize. It also encompasses other genres of literature such as drama, poem, prose, playwright and others alike.
I immensely appreciate both works. They are exceptional and distinctly different in the way their writings are projected to targeted audience. These targeted audience are different on the basis of their cognitive capacity.
Soyinka wrote plays and acted in drama. He even directed many songs. It is not just about writing novels but embracing other genres.
Those who sat on the committee of Nobel prize were not just random fellows but global intellectual icons in literature fields.
Achebe wrote poems and fictional and non-fiction work, he also was a radio presenter at one time in his career. The ability to raise from the dead, a once lost civilization, dead and misconstrued is why i would prefer him. A told an African story, the way it should be told.

Well, i have my own bias and the non-extant Prof Soyinka with his recent politics and antics coupled with his indigestible work does not put him in my favor, thus i am not neutral nor objective, but i believe AI might provide some bit of objectivity and remove any inherent bias as it cannot have one. So let us ask Chat GPT then. Find attached.

Both are great in their field of endeavors. One channelled his works on story- telling which he did brilliantly while the other one embraces all genre of literature such as poem , prose , playwright, drama etc.
Soyinka's works are not all meant for secondary school students because they lack cognitive prerequisite to convey its meanings but for professors and advanced learners in higher institutions.
Soyinka is far apart from Achebe just as advanced chemistry text books is far apart from Ababio chemistry for secondary school students.
Saying the writer of Ababio chemistry for secondary school is more knowledgeable than the writer of advanced chemistry for higher institutions is just absolute absurdity.
Popularity and simplicity of one's works don't win Nobel prize award but inherent intelligence does.
This was exactly what the committee on Nobel prize saw in Soyinka's works.
I just think Achebe should have been given bestseller award.
Your argument is flawed, There are text books in literature for beginners and experts but a story is a story, you can choose to tell your story in a convoluted lingua, but it is still a story just made difficult by difficult grammer. Secondly, you are quite wrong in thinking that difficulty level influences winning the Nobel price. Some of the winners of this price are Ernest Hermingway, Rudyard Kipling and I enjoy their works as I do Achebe, they do not use fancy languages or egotistic diction, just plain old English. The Nobel prize is based on your work and the sentiments of people towards you. Achebe was confrontational, Soyinka was more predictable. When it comes to their work each are renown. Things fall apart by Achebe is the foremost work of African Literature. It was novel at its time because it contested the notion of Africans either portrayed in two ways, Innocent and childlike, the white man's burden, half devil but mostly child as put by Rudyard Kipling in his work, 'the white man's burden' or Babarians and cannibals dancing fervently, leaping and gyrating in front of large fires set against a moonless night as portrayed in "heart of darkness" by Joseph Conrad. These were the two traditional set pieces of African culture and people in western written African set prose. The continent itself was seen as wild and unforgiving, dark and damp, sullen and cruel, set to drive these Africans mad. Achebes work shattered this perception, it didn't side with either the white man nor the African, it presented the African and hid culture as people trying to make sense of the world around them and it's changes. It presented the African as a person with his own values, good and bad, flawed and whole, a culture with rules, a land that nourishes and curses, a cultures with its flaws and asks the reader to be the judge. It presents a neutral view of the African and his culture.

I love reading books, I have tried to read some of wole soyinka's books but I could not immerse.
Achebes things fall apart have been translated to more than 50 languages and is compulsory in schools in USA and India. These had bridged the chasm between cultures, people in these climes seeing the African as a person with culture with its own values, not a character moved to act by the non physical forces hiding in shrubs after the African sunset.

So you can write book to bridge gaps and tell a story of your people or you can write your book to impress people about your grasp and grip of their language and they might be nice enough to give you an award. Infact conquering the white man with how adept you can conjugate grammer in his language.

Good day nairalanders, thank God this site is a faceless forum... Few weeks ago my dad told me he is HIV positive, when he told me I was disappointed but I made sure I didn't show it and I encouraged him... Him and my mother has been sick for a while and I certainly know he has transferred it to my mum.... My dad was very promiscuous when he was younger even after he married my mom he was still promiscuous. I am the only child and I have been footing the bills for their medical cares I am just 26 years old and I have spent so much and there is more spending still to come.... My father only told me, my mother is not aware of her health status all she thinks it's just a normal sickness happening to her. I have no one to talk to, I don't trust any friends because I believe when I tell them, they will certainly spread the news and you know the stigmatization against HIV patients, it's not good... I am frustrated, depressed and financially drained, sometimes I stay in my room and cry.... To avoid thinking, sometimes I just drink some alcohol... This issue has been in my heart for several weeks I just had to put it on Nairaland to ease my pain. My father just called me today that my mom has been admitted to the hospital, she was too weak to even walk.... Another spending and I am running out of cash, don't know what to do anymore. It wouldn't be this severe if they found out earlier, it's almost late. May God help me and my parents.
Your mum needs to know ASAP, she needs to start ART, in HIV, every second or day without treatment makes the virus more difficult to combat and causes a lot of damages to the body. Remember that HIV converts the body's immune system to its replication chamber, it literally destroys the body everyday. She needs to know and start her treatment today. HIV is just another chronic illness like HBP, diabetes etc. If properly treated, it is nothing and the person can live a full and normal life.
