This is not exclusive to Igbo culture but a cultural norm everywhere. As far as her family is concern, he is a stranger and not a family member regardless of whatever transpired between him and their daughter. Moreso, something tells me, he is indirectly responsible for her death. He wouldn't go so far to loan millions to save a woman he is betrothed to. Neither will the family sit back and watch him take up all the responsibility.
