Preparation Guidelines for Bedbug Treatment: The level of preparation involved depends on the level of bed bug activity, below are general guidelines, at the time of initial service your technician may require additional preparation and steps be made in advance of the follow up visit. Do not move to another room to avoid being bitten as you will only spread the problem. Do not move items to other rooms or remove pictures frames from walls prior to treatment. Mattress & box spring encasements are required and can be ordered directly from Standard. Reduce overall clutter and unused items as much as possible, especially cardboard items and any storage under or adjacent to sleeping areas. Perform a general vacuuming of all areas paying special attention to moldings, cracks and crevices then bag and discard the vacuum bag outside the building. Please move furniture, stored items and belongings away from walls to allow for proper access, outlet covers should be removed prior to service. Please secure valuables and fragile items prior to service. Have night table drawers removed and emptied for inspection and or treatment. Captain’s beds draws must be emptied directly into clear plastic bags and sealed as beds will need to be turned over with draws removed for treatment. Please note that on occasion older worn pullout couches do not close properly and we cannot be responsible for this. Muslin under box springs and couches may be removed to gain access for treatment. This will not damage them as it is only there for aesthetics. If you have seen Bed Bugs on items or canines have alerted to BedBugs in draws, closets etc. Please remove items and bag then for treatment in dryer. We recommend the use of sturdy clear bags for bed bug prep. Bed, clothes & linens must be dried at high temperatures 140° for 30 minutes. Any items not dried at that time must be sealed in plastic bags addressed prior to use. Laundry bag must be dried, if you use plastic remember to use a new bag following dryer. Do not store items under bed. Stuffed animals or children’s toys which are not to be discarded must be bagged before service, toys should be washed in hot water and stuffed animals dried as above. If items such as books, albums etc. are suspect they should be inspected or bagged for further inspection and self-treatment. The use of PackTite units, are recommended. Check suitcases and backpacks.. Upon arrival inform bed bug technician where bed bugs were found and about any recent acquisitions, guests or bed bug issues with household members nannies, domestics staff or health aids. All people and all pets must be out of the unit at the time of service and for a minimum of Seven hours following. Upon return vent apartment for 30 minutes before reentry. Wash food preparation areas such as counter tops as a general precaution before use. Following treatment some dust or chemicals may have migrated if so please gently remove it with a damp paper towel and discard. As the CEO of a security company –Chogon Guards And Safety Limited, most times I get asked this questions a lot, especially from prospective clients; “why does security matter?.”

I find the question quite interesting because many people tend to regard security as a luxury rather than as a necessity. That’s why I have decided to lay out the answers in the open for those of you out there who might have been secretly asking such a question.

What Is Security?

I did a quick google search and got the following two definitions below;

1. The state of being free from danger or threat.

2. The safety of a state or organization against criminal activity such as terrorism, theft, or espionage: “national security”

With a further enquiry into the world’s greatest encyclopedia, Wikipedia I got the following definition;

“Security is the degree of protection against danger, damage, loss, and crime. Security as a form of protection are structures and processes that provide or improve security as a condition.”

Given the context of our discussion, all three definitions apply.

Security is a feeling that comes from knowing that you are free from potential dangers or threat. It is the extent at which you go to minimize or eliminate anything that threatens your peace of mind.

Why Is Security Important?

• Security is a basic human need

According to psychologist Abraham Maslow, the great proponent of the hierarchy of needs theory of motivation; security is a basic human need. He identified five fundamental human needs;

1. Physiological (air, water, food, sex, shelter )
2. Safety (security, protection, health, law)
3. Social (love, family, relationships)
4. Esteem (achievement, confidence, recognition)
5. Self-actualization (morality, creativity, purpose)

The basis of his theory of motivation is that human beings are motivated by unsatisfied needs, and that certain lower needs need to be satisfied before higher needs can be addressed. According to him, the satisfaction of these needs is quite healthy. While preventing their gratification makes us ill or act evilly.

As a human, it’s been configured into our biological systems to seek safety from potential danger, damage, loss, and crime. As psychologist Abraham Maslow has rightly pointed out, denying ourselves of satisfying this basic human instinct can make us ill or act evilly. Denying yourself of security is a risk on its own and a violation of your fundamental human rights.

• Security is your right to live!

I have met quite a number of people who often think they don’t need security since they don’t have something valuable to lose. I have never heard of a more senseless reason than this. Seriously, let’s put aside all the exotic goods or luxury belongings and properties of the rich. Let’s talk about the most priceless property of all, one that every human being whether rich or poor owns – LIFE.

The reason why security found its way as one of the basic human needs according to psychologist Abraham Maslow; is because without security our existence as humans is gone. Without security our very survival is lost. Life on earth will cease to exist. Take for instance the increasing threat posed on planet earth as a result of global warming and other environmental issues. How do we live in peace when the environment we live in is a threat to our very existence?

While I can understand that many may not have valuable properties or interests to protect, but we all have life. And that is not the exclusive right of some certain few, it is a gift given to all equally by the creator. Life is life, one life is no more important than another. So long as you’ve got life, you’ve got something to lose and so you it’s your responsibility to protect it. Security is your right to live!

With the recent state of insecurity in the country due to the rampant kidnapping of the past and now to the emergence of terrorism from ‘boko haram’; people have come to the bitter realization that without security, there can be no economic stability.

The more predictable you become, the easier it is for the enemy to strike. They will simply plan an attack based on your predictable patterns of life. If you return from work the same time every day, the enemy can plan an attack at that exact time.

So allow some form of randomness in your life. As they say, the only constant thing in life is change, likewise, try to change some static patterns in your life that can be used as clues by the enemy to strike.

2. Be Secretive – Talk Less
Don’t share personal information with strangers. The enemy works with information before striking. The more they know, the more accurate the attack. The less they know, the less accurate the attack. So how can you protect yourself? By keeping your mouth shut.
