Bruh, it depends on your location, if you're in Lagos, you can earn more with your good background in ICT.

They probably left because of poor remuneration and conditions of service.. The work load on them over stretched their elastic limits, beyond the maximum load which exceeds the breaking point. So they chickened out.

Firstly, I feel your pain. That said, I do believe part of the blame lies with you. As a math teacher, you should be highly respected at that school. It all depends on how you carry yourself—after all, you’re teaching a core subject.

Let me share my experience as a teacher from about five years ago.

It was a small school, and the monthly salary was 22k. I was told that I was the only teacher earning that much, while the others earned 2k less. Working hours were from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm, with a mandatory after-school session from 2:10 pm to 4:30 pm. The revenue from the after-school lessons was shared among the teachers and the proprietor in set percentages.

You can imagine how meager the pay was given all the hard work. So, I started marketing myself online, looking for after-school tutoring opportunities to supplement my low income. I registered with several online tutoring platforms, which helped me find at least two students—one paying 15k and the other 26k monthly for three weekly sessions each. That brought in a total of 41k!

I realized I didn’t really need the school if I could earn that on a part-time basis. Feeling confident, I approached the administration, requesting to leave by 2 pm without attending the after-school program. They resisted, of course! I told them I’d rather resign, and guess what? They granted my request. They had no choice; it's hard to find a good math teacher.

Later, I got a third student who alone paid 50k monthly for three weekly sessions. I went back to the school and asked them to compress my schedule so I’d only need to come in three days a week; otherwise, I’d leave. Guess what? That was granted too!

My point is: you must make yourself stand out and become indispensable at the school. Let them see how valuable you are without having to say it. They will never treat you condescendingly, ever.

The price differs and there are other items in reaching the total pay.

Overall, the total amount payable ranges between N11,000 to N20,000 (as at 2023).

Hopefully there will be adjustments this year seeing that WAEC increased her fees.
