Chinese fans bowled over by U.S. professional wrestling SHANGHAI (Reuters) - The Shanghai crowd howled with delight as half-naked giants in glittering briefs strutted into the ring and began slamming each other to the mat. The audience had come from all over China to watch muscle-bound foreigners with odd names like Rey Mysterio, Jack Swagger and The Big Show kick, punch and pile-drive each other. It was likely the first time that many of the crowd had ever seen U.S. professional wrestling in the flesh but they clearly knew the script. Some wore Mexican wrestling masks others carried signs with messages for their favorites. They chanted "You suck! You suck!" in English at the villains. "I'm here for the hot guys," said one woman carrying a sign with an invitation for a champion known as Sheamus to visit Sichuan province. Ed Wells, senior vice president for international operations at Stanford, Connecticut-based WWE (originally World Wrestling Entertainment), which specializes in choreographed violence by big men in tights, said fans were the same the world over. "They watch us every week, they know the characters, they know the phrases and they are very ready to participate." Stephanie Wang, an organizer of a WWE fan club, said she got interested in American pro-wrestling while channel-surfing on her satellite television. "Boxing is boring but professional wrestling has a plot," she said. The show, billed as the WWE Smackdown, first passed through China in 2010, when it gave away free tickets. Saturday saw its first full-fledged commercial spectacle in China. Tickets started at the not-insignificant price of 300 yuan ($47.17) and went up to 1,500 yuan for a ringside seats. The stadium was not sold out but thousands of noisy fans packed in to the more expensive seats. "MORE VIOLENCE" The WWE moved into China in 2007, signing distribution agreements with 10 provincial television stations and video sites Tudou and Youku, giving it nationwide reach. Wells said growth in China has consistently been in "double digits". One Chinese microblog dedicated to WWE has more than 30,000 followers, and a search for WWE on Tudou returns more than 50,000 clips, some viewed more than a million times. Pirated downloads are also popular to get past squeamish censors. "It's got more violence," one young man said. A question for the WWE is whether it needs a Chinese star for success. Does pro-wrestling need a spandex-clad version of basketball star Yao Ming, credited with making that sport one of the most popular in China? "We'd love to have a Chinese star and we're certainly open to working with Chinese talent," said Wells though adding he didn't believe fans were particularly looking to root for fellow countrymen. "John Cena, one of our top superstars, may be more popular than the local talent anywhere he goes," Wells said. Lu You, manager of a WWE fan club, agreed: "Of course it would be better if there was a Chinese star but John Cena is my favorite." ($1=6.3600 yuan) |
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Canadian memorabilia dealer who worked with Michael Jackson's mother on a tribute book, and whose websites used the singer's image and music, violated copyrights held by Jackson's estate, a judge ruled on Friday. A federal judge in Los Angeles granted an injunction blocking entrepreneur Howard Mann from using the websites "michaeljacksonsecretvault.com" and "MJgives.com" and other similar domain names, saying he had infringed the dead singer's intellectual property. "There is undisputed evidence that (Mann) intended in bad faith to profit from use of Jackson's name, by registering multiple domain names containing his name or the initials 'MJ' to sell Jackson-related products," U.S. District Judge Dean Pregerson wrote in his ruling. The executors of Jackson's estate filed the case against Mann in January 2011, 18 months after the "Thriller" singer's sudden death in Los Angeles from an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol. The estate holds the copyright to Jackson's image and music for the benefit of the singer's mother Katherine and his three children. Judge Pregerson sided with executors, who claimed that the websites run by Mann used copyright protected clips of Jackson's song "Destiny", a logo featuring the self-styled "King of Pop" and art from the posthumous concert movie "This Is It". Mann has worked with Katherine Jackson on several projects since 2009, including a 2010 "Never Can Say Goodbye" coffee table book featuring recollections of her son, as well as a DVD and calendar featuring what were described as never before seen photos and video. All were sold through the "secretvault" website. Mann claimed he obtained the rights to the material at a bankruptcy sale involving members of Jackson's family several years ago. The "www.michaeljacksonsecretvault.com" site failed to load on Friday and Mann could not immediately be reached for comment. Howard Weitzman, a lawyer for Jackson's Estate, said a court date set for September 4 will involve "how much in damages the Michael Jackson Estate is entitled to collect from Mann and his various entities." The two executors, John McClain and John Branca, said in a statement they were "extremely pleased" with the Court's ruling which will prevents Mann from "continuing to unlawfully profit from Michael Jackson and his intellectual property." |
LUCKNOW, India (Reuters) - A minister in India's most populous and politically crucial state, Uttar Pradesh, has said bureaucrats can steal a little as long as they work hard - sparking national outcry in a country whose ruling class has long been mired in corruption scandals. "If you work hard, and put your heart and soul into it ... then you are allowed to steal some," Shivpal Singh Yadav told a gathering of local officials in comments caught on camera. "But don't be a bandit." The comments on Thursday were caught by a local TV camera and then played on newscasts across the country. Yadav, a minister for public works who belongs to the state's ruling Samajwadi Party, quickly sought to control the damage, calling a news conference to explain that the comments had been taken out of context and that he had been discussing how to combat corruption. "In that event the media was not allowed in, I don't know how they sneaked in. And if they had sneaked in, the whole discussion should have come out in the press, not just part of it," he said on Friday. Uttar Pradesh, which is bigger than Brazil by population, was earlier governed by 'Dalit Queen' Mayawati. She has been criticized for spending millions of rupees on building statues of herself and buying diamond jewelry despite widespread malnutrition and poverty in her state. Yadav's nephew is Akhilesh Yadav, Uttar Pradesh's chief minister, who came to power earlier this year proclaiming an end to corruption in the state. Foreign-educated Akhilesh Yadav, who is state's youngest chief minister, had projected himself as an agent of change, even though members of his party have been involved in criminal investigations. Last year, millions of middle-class urban Indians protested against corruption swirling around the government. But even though Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government has been mired in massive graft scandals the anti-corruption protests have now lost momentum. |
African American actor Al Freeman Jr. dies, aged 78 . (Reuters) - Actor Al Freeman Jr., perhaps best known for his portrayal of Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad in Spike Lee's 1992 film "Malcolm X," has died, Howard University said on Friday. "It is with tremendous sadness that the passing of our beloved Professor Al Freeman, Jr. is confirmed," Kim James Bey, chair of the university's theater department said in a statement. Freeman was a faculty member at the university. She gave no details about the death of Freeman, who was 78 and taught acting at the Washington-based university, but said a statement would be issued later. Freeman's long career in film, television and theater included an enduring role playing police Captain Ed Hall on the TV soap opera "One Life to Live" from 1972 through 1987. He was credited with being the first African American to win a Daytime Emmy Award for outstanding lead actor for his work on the soap opera, a prize he was awarded in 1979.
