What does a chassis number say about a car? How will one know how to use it to check car condition? I've never heard this angle before, enlighten me pls
Great question.

The chassis number (VIN) doesn't directly tell you the current condition of a car, but it helps verify the vehicle's identity and history.

Think of it as the car's fingerprint.

By checking the VIN/chassis number, you can:

• Confirm the vehicle matches its documents.

• Verify the actual year, make and model.

• Detect cloned or stolen vehicles in some cases.

• Check accident or salvage history if records exist.

• Ensure the seller isn't presenting one vehicle while the documents belong to another.

For me, VIN checks are more about verifying the identity of a vehicle before payment than checking its physical condition.

A faulty engine can be repaired, but document-related issues can become much bigger problems.

Have you ever checked a VIN before purchasing a vehicle?

Buying a used car in Nigeria can either save you money or cost you a fortune if you're not careful.

Before I pay for any vehicle, these are the 7 things I check:

1. Engine condition
2. Vehicle documents
3. Chassis/VIN number
4. Signs of accident repairs
5. Interior condition
6. Tyres and suspension
7. Test drive performance

Many buyers focus only on appearance and price, but a clean-looking car can still have serious hidden issues.

Personally, I believe checking the vehicle documents and chassis number is one of the most important steps because that's where many buyers get into trouble.

What other things do you think buyers should check before paying for a used car in Nigeria?
