YABATECH curently boasts of over 25,000 students population in both full time and part time, and over 1,900 staffs. YABATECH was established in 1947 as a successor to Yaba Higher College and it is the oldest tertiary institution in Nigeria. YABATECH is the first higher institution in Nigeria to establish a full-fledged centre for Entrepreneurship Development which offers compulsory courses that must be taken by students in all categories. YABATECH consists of 8 Schools, 34 Academic Departments and about 64 Accredited Programmes. Some of the Departments in YABATECH are: Department of Chemical Science, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Department of Physical Science, Department of Biological Science, Department of Computer Technology, Department of Food Technology, Department of Hotel and Catering Management, Department of Polymer and Textile Technology, Department of Agricultural Technology, Department of Languages, Department of Mass communication, Department of Accountancy and Finance, Department of Business Administration, Department of Secretarial Studies, Department of General Studies, Department of Architectures, Department of Building Technology, Department of Estate Management, Department of Quantity Surveying, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Department of Land Surveying, Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Department of Industrial Maintenance Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Fine Art, Department of Industrial Design, Department of Printing Technology, Business Education, Home Economics Education, Industrial Technical Education (Building), Industrial Technical Education (Metal Work), Industrial Technical Education (Elect/Elect).
In November 2016, a bill to convert YABATECH into a City University was passed which was sponsored by senator Gbenga Ashafa, (APC), Lagos East, TITLED: CITY UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, YABA LAGOS. In March 2018, a new Rector (Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe) was appointed for YABATECH, his administration made a huge difference by reducing the programme duration of PART TIME students to 2 years rather than 3 years and school fees to be paid per semester and not per session. The first executive president of Nigeria Shehu Shagari, the founder of Nigerian Stock Exchange Akintola Williams, the author of T.M Aluko, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Ruth Kadiri, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Late Retired Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, and alot of others. A YABATECH graduate “Olumide Oresegun (an apostle of realism)” whose hyperrealistic paintings (almost life-like) broke the internet in 2016 and attracted alot of response from all over the world. Just a few from his
collections of paintings: in 2014, YABATECH won the 18th edition of the Nigerian Polytechnic Games NIPOGA with a 34 MEDAL Haul. As at the year 2017, the best graduating student of yabatech is Abdulwaheed Shitta from the school of management and business studies HND while Nnamdi Nwanne came out overall best from the School of Engineering ND (31st Convocation Ceremony). In the year 2018, Yabatech adopted a new system of screening newly admitted candidates, known as the E-SCREENING, which has been the first ever. in 2017, Yabatech Established an ANTI-CORRUPTION and TRANSPARENCY UNIT (ACTU) to tackle corrupt practices within the yabatech community which was inaugurated by the Independent Corrupt Practice Commission ICPC. In December 2015, Yabatech recieved its operating licence for a Radio Station and currently in-talk with the National Broadcasting Commission to give the final approval to go fully on Air, and YABATECH RADIO will kick off soonest. As at December, 2017, YABATECH is said to generate over N2 Billion Naira Yearly (Internally Generated Revenue IGR and about N400 million Federal Government’s Yearly Grant as well as other grants and donations which the institution receives. In the year 2018, an online platform YABATECH STUDENTS was established (www.yabatechstudents.com.ng), with the sole aim of keeping the entire students, aspirants, alumni, staff, properly informed on all the gists, gossips, news, admissions, etc that goes on within the YABATECH community.
